New Years Eve Pyrate style!

I suggested that with the amount of cannons we had on board that we should try to take Fort McHenry since we were at that end of the harbour, but Captain Lou wouldn't let us. Even without the option to slit a few throats, a spectacular time was had aboard The Clipper City on a very pyratical New Years Eve. Complete with Drunken Ferrets, The Brigands, familiar faces from The Maryland Renaissance Festival, and a few landlubbers thrown in, we danced, ate, and drank for four hours and great cruise! It may very well become a tradition for us each New Years.

The 12 Steps ye be needin' to become one o' me mateys:

Step 1: We admitted that our lives had become adventurous and we had no power over our need to pillage, plunder, and drink.

Step 2: To believe that our power lies within ourselves and will lead us to the ultimate treasure.

Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of the Jolly Roger, arrrr

Step 4: Made a list of our past transgessions and cackled, made a commitment to repeat a few before we go to Davey Jones' Locker!!

Step 5: Admitted to the Sea, our captain and at least one drunken crewmate what a scurvey dog truly we are and not let anyone one-up us!

Step 6: Comiitted to bein' the best darn ole pirate the world ever did see, a real character.

Step 7: Boastfully proclaim to everyone and everything, including any divine forces who happen to be handy, that we are perfect just as we is!

Step 8: Made a list of people we used to drink and carouse with, and a list of people we wanted to drink and carouse with.

Step 9: Went out and found me mateys that I had been a carousin' and a plunderin' with and did it all again!!! AAARRRRRGGGGGG!!!! A good time was had by all!

Step 10: Continued to carouse and pillage and when we did something particularly nasty, promptly boasted about it!

Step 11: Sought through lying and cheating to improve our constant contact with the sea, as we understood her, doing so only for knowledge of her will for us and the power to carry that out, whatever that means. (this step is often done in a dream like haze, could be secondary to earlier carousin' and plunderin')

Step 12: repeat last 11 steps. With MORE RUM this time!!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I mean, ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

We each had a brace of pistols and a cutlass at the hip.

It's a point that tells against us and a fact to be deplored, but
We chased the goodly merchantmen and laid their ships aboard.

Then the dead men fouled the scuppers and the wounded filled the chains
And the paintwork was all splatterdashed with other people's brains.

She was boarded, she was looted, she was scuttled till she sank
And the pale survivors left us by the medium of the plank.

Oh then it was how saddening by the aft rail on the poop
You could hear the drowning folk lament the absent chicken coop.

And having washed the blood away we had little else to do
Than dance a quiet hornpipe as the old salts taught us to.

Treasure Chest Spell

Perhaps in the shape known as feline it will be!
Tie 31 knots with green yarn to secure the chest and make a wish with each knot as you cast your spell.
Seal this with your candle green..be sure to keep the flame indeed.

Pirate Pistols

OK, so in movies you see pirates walking around with what are best described as horse pistols and huge caliber pistols (something over .50 Cal.). Reality was the .45 and .50 Queen Anne was the most common pistol of the late 17th to early 18th Century. Yet we see so often these "horse pistols". I carried a Charlville .69 for over a year, and that was just a pain in the ass due to it's size and weight (and authenticity was an issue).

Where does reality and concept collide?

Tell me, me fellows and lasses, does carrying a large pistol make the pirate?

I am personally going to be testing out twin Queen Annes, but as a smaller person I cannot carry over 3 and look "right".

With all the garb and crap, is a large pistol comfortable? A brace of large pistols?

Madame Ching...dangerous women

Shih Yang also known popularly as Madame Ching was one of the greatest Chinese pirates who sailed the seas in the 19th century. At the height of her career she commanded approximately 2,000 ships and 50,000 pirates controlling the seas from Hong Kong to the Vietnamese border.

Madame Ching was never defeated as it was stronger than the Chinese military. Out of desperation, the emperor of China granted amnesty to all pirates in 1810. Madame Ching negotiated the pardons for herself and her captians. The agreement was made that Madame Ching (which went to her husband) would command a part of the imperial fleet, receive a palace and high honors for her and her captains and retain her fortune if she would retire. She agreed and it is said that 'the seas were once again peaceful'.

Now flowers? leave them on land unless you are planning a funeral. To ensure calm seas bring a naked lady with you and you are sure to have smooth sailing! Take heed as you sail the great seas! Ne're say the word drowned or you'll be low below...food for all the fishes and at the grave of Davy Jones...low below!!!

Blackbeard's Ship
"The Queen Anne's Revenge"

Blackbeard acquired his ship the way all good pirates get theirs. He stole it. Blackbeard was sailing with Captain Hornigold in the Grenadines in November of 1717 when they came across a merchant ship that was flying the French flag. Hornigold in one ship and Blackbeard in another closed in on the merchant vessel from two directions, fired upon it and it apparently quickly surrendered.

With the ship surrendered, Hornigold became the new owner of "Le Concorde de Nantes".. The ship was a French built "flute" from Nantes.. When Hornigold retired from pirating, he gave the ship to Blackbeard who renamed it "The Queen Anne's Revenge".

The ship was recently discovered late 1996 in the shoals of the Beaufort Inlet at Beaufort, NC.

Six Water Grog

Ever wonder where that term 'grog'comes from? Well it is a nickname for Admiral Edward Vernon, Port Royal Commodore in Jamaica and Naval Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's ships in the west Indies , who sailed from England July 20th,1739 to attack the Spanish in the West Indies with nine men-of-wars and one sloop. Admiral Vernon wore a cloak made of grogam and they called him"Old Grogam" or" Old Grog". He ordered a ration of half pint of rum diluted with one quart of water(four water grog) to keep the sailors in control of their drinking.. 'Half and half grog' was equal parts rum and water. 'Seven water grog' was very weak grog. The expression 'groggy' came from a sailor who drank too much 'grog'. So this conncoction became 'grog' because the rum was as thin as Old Grog's cloak. Six water grog was the weakest of all- hardly enough rum to swear by. Given as punishment for neglect or drunkenness. So ye best beware of yer poor behavior lest ye be only given six water grog to wet it.

BarFly Magazine is looking for 5 high-spirited Pirates to take on a merciless crew of Klingons in Dysfunctional Family Feud, at Dante's on Saturday night. Dysfunctional Family Feud is a live gameshow in the tradition of the t.v. favorite, but with BarFly's twist: contestants answer survey questions, based on BarFly research, locally conducted in the taverns and lounges of PDX. The result is a lively game that’s fun to play and hilarious to watch, too, as 'straight answers' randomly alternate with more creative responses from the inebriated public! We are looking to put together a last minute crew of FIVE PIRATES, due to a grievous "total screw-up" on the part of yours truly, BarFly's proud publisher and co-host of the Feud.

Contestants don’t need any special trivia knowlege or know-how to play the Feud - it's all about guessing what the most popular answers are to questions like, "Name something you eat when you’re hungover". It’s not neuroscience, folks, just plain fun. Contestants will need to represent in true Pirate form, and proper pirate attire will be required!

Knots in their hair

Ever wonder why many a pirate have knots in their hair? Many braid the hair and knot it to assure the staying of the knots. Some add trinkets and treasure as well. Some of these are crystals that add protection to the Pirate.. aquamarine..a favorite of Posiedin. So do you think it is just a hairdo? Well it is a lot more than just a look. Ancient weather magick it is! Here is an example: unbraid one knot...to summon up a breeze! You can only guess what happens when you unbraid more!!! This also applies to the ropes(not all pirates have long hair). So the next time you go sailing with a pirate beware how many knots he unties as he's twirling his locks of hair or coiling his rope! Did I say that? Well use your imagination what kind of storm might come your way and perhaps you'll go sailing another day!

Ever wonder what magick a pirate has hidden away? How did they conjure up so much treasure anyway? Here's a spell that may hold true if you can believe.

* Treasure ship*
Find a model ship and fill it full of treasure....real coins,play coins,crystals,glass gems,jewelry,or whatever is treasure to you. Now place your ship facing so that it is sailing toward you in a special place for you to see. Now on a piece of parchment paper write a letter to an ocean spirit asking for what you really want.....perhaps to Poseidon, Aphrodite or Yemaya or another spirit you may know and roll this up and place it on your ship.
Place on your ship a rose for Aphrodite,shells for Yemaya and for Posiedon an offering of the crystals known as aquamarine.
Now as you sit and gaze at your ship light a white candle, make a wish and see your ship come in!!!
