Howdy everybody -

I posted the best of my pictures of the construction on playa. There are a few more if anyone's interested, but the ones I posted pretty much cover everything. I posted one picture of the tower taken on the second Friday afternoon, after it got good and dusty. It's cool to see it go from gold to silver in a week. I posted one picture from the burn, but unfortunately my camera was kinda hosed then, so I don't have any good ones. I can't wait to see everyone else's, and I'd especially love to see video if we can get video hosted somewhere.

I had a fanfuckingtastic Burn this year, and the Clock Tower was a huge part of that. Thanks for the chance to work on it with you all, great art, great people. Can't wait to do it again!

-Because we built something amazing
and burnt it to nothing…'
-Because we don't know what to do on Sundays anymore…'
-Because Time is of the essence
-Because we need something to fill the Space/Time vacuum at the shipyard now that there is no giant clock tower in the middle of it all…'
-Because we can, We did and, We did well and anything well-done makes me think of BBQ…'

ClockWorks Project After-Burn Party and BBQ
At the ShipYard this Sunday Sept. the 25th
We'll fire up the grill at around 7:00 and hang out till were all out of Beer and stories photos.

-Bring some stories to share.
-Bring some drinks or something for the Grill to share.
-Bring copies of your Clockworks Photos and or video to share.

For Digital Photographers:
If you have digital photos bring the high resolution copies, I'll have my computer set up with camera card readers and a CD burner so who ever is interested can burn CDs of all the photos we collect. if you can, drop by or email me your photos ahead of time, so we can compile everything on a "Best-Of" CD ahead of time. Also let me know in advance if you have video and want to set up a TV or screen.

Looking forward to seeing y'all again soon, with appreciation awe and many, many thanks,
-Glue up

3 Buttress Towers
-Skin buttress towers (1/2- 5/8 ish ply wood)
-Trim out buttress tower to match drawing and other trim
-Add a secret door in the bottom to hide a cooler full of cold beer for out on the plya

-Hang doors
One in first story and One at deck level.

Install Port Hole Windows
-Trim with 2 ½”ish ply wood rings and rivets (like others)
-Ask me or Shannon, or Kimric for window placements or make up your own (use red windows in the roof)

Build ladder for inside tower (one like the one that goes to my loft would be nice)
-Install ladder just to the right of door as you enter the tower.)

Hey, Liam-I have a guy in El Sobrante willing to sell us a slew of 2*4 8-10 foot lengths for half the price of home depot (or so)-he says to make him an offer.
First, what do you think? I think a buck a board is a bargain. It is NEW lumber. no yanking nails, no cutting around crappy knots and the like. plenty of time for that.

WHich is the next question-what kind of fundage do we have for this project? Im not afraid of fronting it for intial pick up if I A-know that others will be contributing financially or B-be reimbursed some how.

hes checking out his stash, and I told him I would run it by the group. thoughts? I have space to store, if you can pick up....

To Ply or not to ply

It has been suggested that we leave off the plywood skin on our building so everyone can see the insides. As you can see in the drawing the main gear box will be open leaving the majority of the mechanics exposed. The first 12 feet or so, of the tower is skinned with ply wood. It contains the drop weights and a pendulum. I don’t want people or wind fucking with these objects. So I drew plywood around them. But I also do not want to conceal them as all of the workings should be visible. I’d like to open the debate for discussion…

To ply or not to ply. That is the Question.

Ply Wood:
Pros:
-Hard for tweakers to climb up tower.
-Fast and easy construction. (nail gun)
-Cheaper. Just nails and ply
-Good sheer strength.
Cons:
-Looks like a crappy plywood building, blocks view of pendulum

Big Beams with giant rusty bolts:
Pros:
-less surface area for wind load
-Does not Block view of pendulum. (Pendulum Might need to be
shielded from wind this will most likely be our deciding factor.
Well know when we build and test the gear box. There are of course
compromises like adding a wood lath mesh to stop wind but still allow
visibility)
-Creates a really awesome timeless aesthetic that we like: No modern
fasteners Just big cast Iron washers and rusty bolts.

Cons:
Climbable, Harder to build, More expensive.

Hey all, Im sure this route has been pursued before, but I just posted the wish list to craigs list, and will continue to do so, in an effort to procure material. I regret that i traded in my truck now!!! However, if any of you have one to loan or are willing to accompany on pickups, please speak up now. Call me at 510-872-1229 and be my Mission Improbable midnight raid partner!

BTW< has anyone checked out the demolition happening up next to the transbay terminal between mission/howard, 1st/2nd? ive been watching it happen the last few weeks, and wonder how much of it is salvageable, but...theres a lot of nice brick out there. Some wood...worth a look see, probably.

The Clock Works Build is always on the look out for cheap or free building materials.

We need all kinds of lumber: 2x4's 2x6's 2x'8's 4x4's or and other large pieces of wood that are of useful length.

If anyone has an old barn or other structure that they need removed from there property I would be willing to do demolition in exchange for the wood if there is enough desirable lumber in the structure.

Bearings: Big Pillow block type bearings or flange mount

two big wooden wine barrels for the drop weights.

Round pieces of plate glass, or nice looking serving platters made of transparent glass for windows or port holes between 12 and 15 inches diameter.

-Large Bolts, Other Building Hardware

Nail gun

Clock Works Web sit is up!
Check out the proposal and drawings at:
http://burningart.com/liam/

This is very exciting but also a huge amount of work. It is going to be a real challenge to get done in the next 5 months. I'm going to need all the help I can get from everyone who ever is willing.

Get involved:

Things we need help with need help with ASAP:

Materials Acquisition (aka: The Ubtainum Outreach Program),
We need lots of wood. Everything from 2x4”s to 2x6” to 2x10” 4x4”s to big 4x6” beams and even plywood and thin trim bits. There is so much scrap wood on it’s way to the land fill right now that I can’t justify buying new wood to burn until the free option is totally exhausted.
We should keep an eye on craigslist and other classified adds for free lumber. I am also willing to do demolition in exchange for free lumber is there is enough desired lumber is the site. Scrap pile raids at nearby construction sites may or may not be included in the Materials Acquisition Program. The longer the piece is the more useful it is. Please don’t overload me with a bunch of splitty nail ridden scraps. A good piece is at least 5’ long

Web Site: I need to keep updating this web site with changed and updates and don’t really know anything about web design. (Rebecca and Charlie helped with this so far but they are too busy to do this all the time)

Engineering: Clock mechanics are not that complicated but building a clock of this scale out of wood is going to be a bit of an engineering feet. You don’t have to be an engineer to get involved you just have to want to do a lot of Research, Modeling, CAD, and Math Problems. If any of this sounds fun. We need your geekyness ASAP. Engineering decisions need to me made right away to We can start building.

Fabrication: I’d like to begin construction of a scale model this weekend. That means CNC work,(cutting more little gears out if wood or plastic sheet, cutting shafts, aligning gears, assembly, testing ect…

-If you’re not interested in any of these things or don’t have any spare time right now but would like to help later down the road send me an email and list your skills and interests so I can put you on the crew list and send you updates on the project.
thanks,
-Liam
