Black screen

I recently dug my computer out of storage after a 3 month vacation, I hooked it up as I always did, started up my computer and everything was working fine. I installed a usb wireless card for linksys and had to reboot my computer. When I rebooted nothing came onto my screen, I couldn't get into my bios or any screen it is just black. I have contacted a couple friends since then to help with the problem and they had a few suggestions. One friend suggested it was a loose or dirty video card so I disconnected my video card and got all the dust out (there was quite a lot) unfortunately that did not solve the problem. I had another friend say that it could be something about my computers power supply unfortunately I don't know anything about that so I had my last friends suggestion which was I didn't have enough video memory?? or not enough memory and it burnt my video card out. I have a nvidia 5700 256 graphics card and 1 gig of ram on my computer. I also disconnected the wireless usb card as my friend suggested and it did nothing either. My friends are out of suggestions and I'm too strapped for cash to go get it repaired, hoping people here have other suggestions of what it might be and how I can fix it.

    David,

If the computer makes the normal start up sounds (hard drive spins up, floppy scan, speaker beep, keyboard flash) then it may just be the monitor. Find a friend with with a known good one and test. Do the same with the video card if necessary.

If the computer does not make normal start up sounds, it could quite possibly be the power supply.

    Good luck

Thanks, Unfortunately I have tried a few different monitors like the one I'm on right now and it has not worked, My computer does sound fine and makes all the proper sounds and I am starting to believe it may be the power supply. The only thing thats keeping me from totally thinking it could be that however is the fact that my friend claims to have the same watt as mine 350 and says theirs works fine. However I don't know how long power supply's last and this one has been in my computer for quite some time now. So I am leaning towards the idea of the power supply but still not 100% that that's the problem. Just as a rough geusstimate my power suplly is somewhere in beween 5-6 years old, not sure if that will help pinpoint the problem.

Thanks again for the suggestion =)

Try a video card swap. That should at least cause beeps from the motherboard, and/or light the monitor for BIOS information. The power supply may be bad, except everything sounds normal, hard drive spin up, Fans, etc. I don't mean to sway your decision. Some high end video cards use a lot of power so trying a more low end card might point out a defect in the power supply. Power supplies are cheap enough. Let us know what you find.

Unfortunately I can't swap video cards due to lack of 2nd video card lol however kinda broke right now but will take it in and probably get it back in two weeks the guy in the town I live in is really cheaply priced. Just started working again lol so should have the money in 2-3 weeks for it. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free. Other than that I will tell you the problem once I get my computer back.

        Cheers and thanks
