I have Office 2003 on my computer. But the temp agencies I go to use 2000 to test with and my favorite Word/Excel books are for 2000 (the disk that comes with them wont work on Word/Excel 2003). If I get a copy of Word/Excel 2000 for my computer and install it, will it erase the Word/Excel 2003 I already have on my computer or can I have both 2000 and 2003 on my computer?

Re: Microsoft Office question
Mon, February 20, 2006 - 10:14 PM2003 will read 2000, so why go backwards? And 2003 will save in a format that 2000 will read. Yes, installing 2000 can mess up 2003. Though it may not let you do it, even if you uninstall, since the program resides on the disk even after erasing, 2000 would just install as 2003 anyway. (I don't know why the disk you have won't read, all office products are backwards comaptible)

Re: Microsoft Office question
Mon, February 20, 2006 - 11:32 PMWhen you attempt to install the older version you will get an error message that states "Newer version already installed"
The new Office will read any documents from the older versions. Office documents format has not changed since Office 97. Excel hasnt changed formats since Office 2000. Access has changed formats in 2003 so will continually prompt you to update the database (which then means older versions can no longer access the data).
As Lee stated, there is no reason the discs that came with your Office 2000 books wont work in 2003. So the question stands, are you sure the discs are still good? Are we talking CD's or Floppy disks... Do they work in other computers still? Can you see the files when you browse to them on the CD or Disk? Maybe a read error and not an application error. -

Re: Microsoft Office question
Tue, February 21, 2006 - 12:11 AMInteresting stuff, Sean and Lee. I'll try it again. Maybe I screwed up somehow or maybe - as you said - the CDs (they're not floppies) aren't good anymore. Thanks for the info, guys. -

Re: Microsoft Office question
Tue, February 21, 2006 - 2:14 AMWait though. The tutorial CD that came with the books actually interacts with word 2000 (so it may not be just a matter of reading it). I'll try it again tomorrow though, but I have a feeling it wont work. -

Re: Microsoft Office question
Tue, February 21, 2006 - 6:59 AMI run an office here with mixed 2000 and Win XP. Likewise the office versions that came with the computers are 2000, 2002, or small business. They read all the documents between each other just fine. I have had requests in the past for newer office programs in addition to the 2000. These have tended to cause errors and other corruption to data. I do not recommend using both on the same computer.
Last note, the tutorial maybe interacting with the files from win 2000. Possible solution is to create a folder in office location with those files on it from the 2000. I wouldn't over write any existing files. This solution is hypothesys only. I haven't the time to test it right now, so if you do it please post the results. -
