My girlfriend is having this weird problem with her HP desktop. When she starts it up it gets stuck on the HP logo screen and doesn't do anything else, no matter what button she pushes. It just started doing this a little less than a week ago. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or what the problem might be. She said this happened just after downloading some Apple update thing.

Re: Weird HP start up problem
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 11:02 AMDoes she have USB or PS2 style keyboard?
Sometimes the older machines balk at boot for failure to detect a keyboard.
Does the keyboard light up? If you hit cap lock, num lock, scroll lock, do any of the status lights on the keyboard flicker on and off? If they do try hitting just Fn1 and see if the system continues to boot (Fn1 bypasses keyboard autodetct)
Another option is as soon as you see the HP logo, hit ESC. This should show you the bios POST test and boot messages. You can see where its potentially locking up here. -

Tue, December 11, 2007 - 5:05 PMThe computer's only two years old. The keyboard doesn't light up at all when she starts up. The keyboard uses a USB connection. -

Re: Weird HP start up problem
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 7:00 PMTry another USB port or another keyboard...
If the keyboard is shot it could be waiting to see one. Or you could have something else bad on the system. memory, cpu, who knows...

Have you tried a different keyboard and/or a different USB connection?

Sat, December 22, 2007 - 4:06 AMRemove all USB connections, and see what happens on boot.
Is it the keyboard that was shipped? Have you updated drivers, bios, or dome ANYTHING els eto the system? Mess with the bios settings?

Re: Weird HP start up problem
Sat, December 22, 2007 - 7:02 PMHmm... well she had some tech support guy come take a look at it and he got it running fine. I don't know what the problem was but he said he needed to take it back to... wherever it is he works to take a closer look and fix it. She said he somehow bypassed the blue HP logo screen.
