Okay, so a few days ago, I was playing a game on my laptop and one of the buttons popped off (this has happened to me before on a different laptop and I was able to ix it after a few hours of fiddling with it). I tried to got this button back in place and sort of got it in but it was very loose. earlier today it popped off again. so, since I was home (last time I was at my dad's house) and I actually had better tools (a leatherman), I tried to fix it. At some point the tool I was using (a short dull regular screwdriver) slipped. so before I went on, I turned on the computer (just to make sure that this button, the "V" key wasn't constantly on, typing V's infinatly). Unfortunately, the laptop started to start up... than it shut down... then it tried to start up again (this time I decided to watch the screen carefully) and it asked me what mode I wanted to start it up as (safe mode, dos prompt, etc). I just pushed enter and after a few seconds of just watching a blank screen, it flickered with a blue warning screen (AKA blue screen of death) and the shut down again. It tried to start up again but I held the "off/on" button until it shut off again.
Does anyone know what I should do? Is this fixable? Is it easy to fix?

Re: Damn button!
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 10:12 PMwhat kinda laptop is it? I would try to somewhat disassemble it, usually, the keyboard is replaceable part. Start above the keyboard, usually the little strip that contains the power button / ect...(varies by manufacturer /model). Pop that out, then look for more screws that hold in the keyboard. I would first try to remove the keyboards connection to the motherboard, then see if it will start, If it willl, then it most likely will be fine with a new keyboard. It may come up with a "no keyboard" error before it boots into windows, depends on the BIOS Type/Settings.
(I would consider this a good sign if it did say this) If this is the case and it will start, I would look for a new keyboard unit. On the part, it should say the part number, or you can google: example: Dell Inspiron 5100 keyboard. I actually have one for a dell 5100 series that a customer had me order then left me stuck with, if that is the kind that you need let me know...
I see that you are in Hawaii, which Island, I am here on the Big Island and am owner of AlohaTechs.com, a small PC Sales/Service. If you are nearby, you can check in with me, this is definately something that I can help you with.
Good Luck With It.

Re: Damn button!
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 3:16 PMIts a compaq (not entirely sure about other details surprisingly enough). A friend of mine runs a company called Q & A (www.Q-A.net, they also have a radio show every saturday) so I just gave it to him to look at. I think I might have to replace the keyboard but he said that windows is what crashed and it might not have anything to do with my attempt to fix the "V" key, which makes sense because it was also running insanely slow whenever I tried to get it to do almost anything (except games strangely enough). Even after I rand Spybot, Adaware, disc clean-up, defrag, and AVG antivirus it was running like that (It sped up a little after that but it was still pretty slow).
I live on Maui btw. If Q & A can't fix it I'll try contacting you.
Aside from "Windows was corrupted" and "Doesn't sound promising" I haven't gotten any new news.
