When I first heard about this year's art theme I immediately thought "What the FUCK!? Burning Man is a global event, not just for Americans! Plus, how fucking commercial and chhesy can we get?"
Since then I've been watching people's plans unfold, and the creativity and twists being put on this theme and all the things it can embody and I've become pretty impressed. It's definitely inspired my costuming choices. Look for a big guy with Vietnam-era olive drab garb with fur on it and a helmet just like the one on the cover of Full Metal Jacket, except, instead of "BORN TO KILL" I have "BORN TO LOVE" on one side and "BORN TO BURN" on the other, and a Burning Man symbol on the back. I'm carrying a guitar as my "weapon" and it has a speaker built right in.
I can to thinking, imagine if we had another army to supplement the military. One that spreads music, hugs. love and laughter instead of bullets and death. That's my American Dream. I know, foofy, huh? Well fuck it. This country needs a mental enema and needs to replace all the paranoia and cynicism with smiles and good times!
So, I figure, the theme is about what we can do to make America become close to our dreams, even if it's only in one little place for a week.
BURN, BABY!!!
