What other night time lighting options are there other than running a generator? Solar power lights? Car batteries? How do you connect an electrical light to a carry battery? Other options?

Re: Power other than generators
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 6:15 AMWe camp in Hushville, so we do not use a genny at all.
Solar lights ... many, mostly camp markers and guy line markers. You can't see reliably by solar lights.
In the main area we keep a candle "burning" ... one of those Christmas window candles with batteries and an electric eye. Provides basic navigation light for folks coming in to their tents.
We have one florescent light fixture, it lights up the entire shade area. It plugs into an inverter, which is alligator clipped to a 12 V deep cell marine battery. The trick is to turn off the light when it isn't in use. IF we need to recharge the battery, and we usually do not, we have a briefcase solar panel. We also use that inverter to recharge camera batteries. We have a second deep cell on the bike for lights (big bike). We do have a larger set of solar panels but have never needed to use them. Plus we have several solar chargers for batteries, just in case.
Individual tents use flashlights or battery lanterns. We have Colemans which run on fuel, but they are too hot and bright. I think we've use ours twice. Also have headlamps and magneto flashlights for potty trips.
We have a hand-crank blender and a wind-up radio. -

Re: Power other than generators
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 6:26 AMI use two deep cycle batteries on a 1200 watt power converter hooked up two 3 -15 watt solar pannels. If you leave it charging all day long you can use it all night. We run a stereo with some big speakers and all of our rope lights off of it. harbor freight has the inverters and the solar pannels and the deep cycle batteries you can get anywhere.It was a bit of an investment but it is well worth it.We do open fire jams up in the mountins where there is no power ,so I bring that baby along for our sound system and rope lights and we party all night long.
Will.

Re: Power other than generators
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 12:21 PMThere are three things the playa provides in abundant quantity:
Dust
Sunlight
Wind
I don't think anyone has figured out how to make electricity from dust, so your options are Solar and Wind power generation.
Google is your friend, let them fingertips run and let us know what you find.

Re: Power other than generators
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 5:30 PMthe guy in burlington vt that makes and markets those is nuts. like close to 400$. which would buy you a 75 watt panel that will produce more in an hour , than you will in 4.

Re: Power other than generators
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 11:41 AMI used something very similar to this:
www.hectorshardware.biz/shop/product.asp
It had two cig lighter plug ins, I ran a computer 12v sound sytem for my ipod off of it, and a few lights etc. this year I have a cig lighter to usb so I plan to have lots more stuff to plug into it, it lasted the entire event without a single recharge. It does however plug into a standard household plug if you need to recharge it. -

Re: Power other than generators
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 2:53 PMXak;
Get a cheap inverter with a plug.
And here is what I do;
Small solar panel (from the auto store 80$) into the main car battery which goes into the car cig lighter into the inverter into the jump start unit. Yea! PERFECT! portapower! -
