Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 1:37 AMActually, that's Monday. Burning Man officially ends on Labor Day. The Temple Burn is traditionally on Sunday night and you don't want to miss that.

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 2:08 AMYep, what Love Monkey said, ya dont have to leave until Monday, but be advised, the traffic on Monday out of Black rock city can test even the most Zen, laid back person, so, be prepared for a long wait, up to several hours, unless ya leave EARLY monday morning, or Sunday night right after Temple burn...
just be prepared, have some snacks handy, some cold beverages, and a pee bottle of some sorts, once you are in line to exit the city porta pottys are hard to come by...
pack the patience. and listen to SMIR raido, they will not only update you frequently on the traffic issue but they will keep you entertained while you wait in the exit line....

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:29 AMWe actually left after the Temple Burn last year, and it took us more than four hours just to get to the road. I'm not sure when we're going to leave this year... -

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:11 AMit's true Chia, used to be leaving right after the burns was a quick shot to the blacktop, but not anymore... we have just resigned ourselves to the fact that there will be traffic and we prepare for it....
there are little windows of time that if ya get out in those shorts windows its quick and easy, we have mny times made it to the gate in under an hour leaving right after the burns... but, anymore LOTS of others have the same idea so, ya take your chances I guess...
being prepared with snacks, drinks, some good tunes, BMIR radio, and a pee bottle make that drive out much nicer...

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:27 AMI think the process of getting out of BM last year made me never want to come back. I could get over everything else... the dust storms, the heat, the tough first year... but that damn line...
But I'm going back, so there must be something good..and it wasnt the line.

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:06 AMNo sweat.
You can also spend Monday packing everything up, then drive out on Tuesday morning. If you are there past Tuesday morning and are not event staff you will be asked to leave. -

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:08 AM<grin> I know, but I wasn't gonna promote the leaving Tuesday thing since it could cause more people to just hang out till then and for everyday it could create the traffic to stretch out, come to think of it.. that may not be such a bad idea.... one side of the city leavs Monday, the other side leaves tuesday.. Hmmm!!
anyway...

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:24 AMI had the same concern at first. Someone once proposed that everyone be assigned exit times and given a pass/slip of paper whatever that specified what their exit time was. Then come Monday, you leave at your assigned time. If that time didn't wortk for you there could be a central point where parties could swap exit times.
Didn't seem like such a bad idea.

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:23 AMI've stayed until Tuesday afternoon in a past year, due to finishing up a large scale art project. They will go around from camp to camp asking you why you are still there. Unless you are with the DPW clean up crew, go home.
Do not expect to be able to stay later than Tuesday morning.

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 9:05 AMHAHA! That reminds me of last year. I had forgotten until the mention of staff going from camp to camp asking why you are still there.
Just minutes after first arriving we had a ranger stop and suspiciously ask if we were underage drinking. He was very accusatory and aggressive. We showed him that we were drinking water... and besides that we were far over 21. What a welcome for 2 n00bs. -

A Ranger, or one of the BLM/local cops? Big difference. -

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:24 AMHonestly, I dunno. I was a virgin and I had literally just arrived. It may have been a cop. I was to wide-eyed- and shocked at the new enviroment to take note of his attire or badge, but only to be suprised at such a strange first BM experiance.
I should really be flattered that we were assumed underage. I'm not usually mistaken for someone that young.

Re: When do they start kicking you out?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:39 PMI stayed for a month after Burning Man 2007, and it was the greatest unpaid working vacation ever! DPW cleanup is truly amazing, and gave me a new perspective even after my 9th event. I highly recommend it to anyone with a free September and a strong back. If you plan to stay (and think you are hard-core enough to stick it out) contact DPW beforehand so they have some idea who you are when you show up at the 8 AM Tuesday meeting.
Other than that, you are supposed to leave by 8 AM Tuesday. Exceptions may be made for those cleaning up big projects, especially if they are nice and have beer. "Good DPW/ Bad DPW" teams start harassing those still on the playa on Wednesday, especially if they are not obviously cleaning. On "Get The F*** OUT Friday" stragglers are liable to be cited for trespassing by the BLM.
