I was chatting with a not-anymore-virgin burner last night about what would he do differently? His response was not dealing with Exodus, which is a yearly pain.
MIne would be to stop and smell the roses a bit more. I probably so more of the city than most of you (walking around or riding a bike for six hours straight most nights) and saw quite a bit, but it was on a macroscopic level. I missed out focusing on the smaller stuff.
So, what would you do differently next year?

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 6:28 PMI have FINALLY, after 12 years, found my balance, and I wouldnt do it any differently, took me YEARS to figure it out and now I have it just the way I like it...
I eat when I want, I sleep when I want, I work when I want, I ride the bike or not as I please, and have discovered that I actually prefer walking then riding... I think I might even leave the bike at home next year...
I don't rush to get to something, that may or may not, most likely not be there when I get there.. IF I make it to a particular performance cool, if not, that's cool too,
I have learned that the playa provides... almost as if by magic or some karmic ideal
true story, I was riding out to the man, thru the THICK playa, man, that was work this year, I found leg muscles I forgot I had NOT used in years.. I had left my spray bottle at camp
Crap!! though I, cuz I take that spray bottle everyhwere.... I was hot and tired and REALLY just wanted to cool myself off with a spritz...
I told my friend I forgot my spray bottle, and I wish I had it, no sooner than I said that, a very kind biker rode passed, stopped, turned around, and said. "you look like you could use a spritz" WOW!! YOU BET!! Thanks said I... he went on his way and I reveled in the coolness of that spray.... before trudging along in the dunes... EXACTLY what I wanted and needed when I wanted and needed it
when it was white out for hours, we sta and visited with people, after awhile we put on our masks and took a short walk to the neighbors.....
it's all about allowing the playa to happen the way it's meant to, ya dont have to go to every party, ya dont have to drink every drink, or try every drug... unless of course thats your focus..
old songs make me happy, and theres a line I Love from a VERY Old song
Slow down, you're movin too fast, got to make the moment last.....
differntly, I'd bring less clothing..... I STILL Pack tooooo many outfits that I NEVER wear..
hope ya all had a good one.. and if not.. well, maybe ya can try again next year

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 7:14 PMLovely, Bare !!
Mine are just little, more surfacy things that I keep trying to tell myself every year, and some I just discovered:
~use the pen and paper more. Keep a journal.
~Give out all of those cool stickers I made!! ALL of them, not just 3/4ths!
~Go to sticker camp, dammit! :)
~Dont be too shy to get contact info from new friends.
~Opposit of Bare: TRY to make it to some things I really wanna see! Im always having so much fun, but doesnt hurt to TRY to get to more stuff you really wanna do. For me, its music. Im music sensitive. I shoulda seen 4 Albino shows, not just 1.5. I shoulda coulda woulda seen/felt 3 Rab performances, not just 1/2. It would of done wonders for my personal psyche and I know it. Im proud I made it to the ones I did, they were very healing for me.

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 7:16 PMIt was my 5th year, and there's still some things I learn every year and would do differently.
Like LyingBare, I STILL bring too many clothes. I did what I thought was a big purge this year, and cut down on my clothing/costumes.... but still ended up not wearing maybe 1/3 of the stuff..... not TOO bad, really, but dang. I guess I'd rather have too many, and be able to share, than not enough?
I need to bring a bike with gears, if the playa surface is gonna be like this again. It was TOUGH!
I want to get out and walk more, and interact with strangers more. I did that a bit more this year than in years past, but I still find myself regretting that I didn't make as many random connections as I felt I wanted to. (inherent shyness!)
And I REALLY want to ride on an art car next year. It's been 5 years, and never been on one through various circumstances. (big art buses don't count-- I rode on one of those once.)

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 7:23 PMBare, I LOVE your advice--especially coming from someone who has already tried it many different ways.
My own lessons from Burn #1:
I wish I'd been a little less preoccupied with all the "warnings." I spent too much preparation time researching goggles, dust masks, electrolytes, hydration packs, foot moisturizers, on and on.
I should have paid more attention to the constant admonitions to "bring less food." (At least we have Playa leftovers to feast on for weeks to come!)
I wish I'd spent more time wandering the streets, making serendipitous discoveries, and interacting.
I probably wouldn't have volunteered quite so much. I worked four six-hour Perimeter shifts, which ate up a lot of quality time.
I would try harder to remember to zip my tent closed when leaving for the day.
I would make a hard and fast rule (which had actually already been suggested to me): if a project isn't finished by the time you leave home, leave it at home. Don't waste Playa time soldering, fabricating, sewing, etc.
If at all possible, I'd also avoid the Exodus crush. Ideally, that would mean leaving later, rather than earlier.
A couple things I'd want to repeat: arriving early (Saturday of the pre-Burn weekend) and spending the night in Reno on both the way in and out. (I was coming from L.A.)
And to echo Bare's observation: I preferred walking to riding. That might partly be the challenging conditions of the 2008 Playa. But also I like the slower pace, the ability to absorb more, stop more easily, not have to worry about where the bike (or trike, in my case) is, or about avoiding collisions, and be free to get on art cars.

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 10:06 PMI would not do anything differently. Not a thing.
I have really strong legs so biking on my gifted skinny tire bike was no problem. Anne thank you so much for that bike. Ms. Silver and I were flying all week long, to the point that those with fatter tires kept yelling, "Slow down!" People kept looking at 'my' new bike saying um no way you aren't riding that but I DID and it was fabulous.
My guy rented a minivan that folded all seats into the floorboards, so the entire back was our bed and we had lots of foam and padding and it was super quiet so we had this comfy bed and would take air conditioned naps every day. It worked.
I got sleep. I didn't get trashed or stay up once while there.
I ate more than I usually do because my boyfriend is a bodybuilder and he insisted. I drank more water and pushed more on him than I'm used to.
I danced a lot. And I just thought of one thing I would do different. I would start looking for boots I want to wear soon because I knew the ones I have would rip my ankles and heels up, and they did. I just didn't have time last minute to find really comfortable ones. I'm going to get new ones now and start wearing them out a lot so next BM they will be comfy.
Our camp was a low maintenance camp, with shared space and resources, but we all fended for ourselves. It was perfect. Everyone should do that.
xoxo

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 7:23 PMI rented an rv this year and I have already bought an old ford econoline propane powered beast for next year. Saving up for a portable shade structure, decent tent, and solar panels to run the 12volt cooler. the rv was great for a virgin, because I didn't know what to expect, but now that I have an idea, I can definitely tone it down a few notches.
I managed to let the playa work its magic on me and I was not too strung out about getting to anything in particular, although I did get to the chiropractor, I always kept missing the pimp your bike folks and the fire spinning classes. Next year, I will try again. But not rushing off to things allowed me to see things I would have never put on my list - Thudnerdome, Cirque Birzirk, Velvet Soul Mine, Home, teeter totter of death, that horrible slaughterhouse film (yikes!), and a bunch of stuff I don't even remember... -

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 9:02 PMThis year was my vigin year, so of course, what isn't there to tweak? LOL
The big ones: Less food. OMG! way less food, I'm not staying for a month.
Less reg. clothes, more costumes.
More clothes for the 3 day return home. I was starting to smell like a homeless person. Hmmm, like I was for a week?
And extra shoes! You could tell at the restaraunt in Fernley monday night who had burned by their shoes :)
Did I mention less food?
Explore more. Like Bare I did hoof it alot, partly because of the playa condtions, but also because I could see more.
Read the WWW earlier! And then freaking follow through LMAO
Pajamas!

Re: What would you do differently?
Thu, September 11, 2008 - 9:38 PMEvery year we vow to bring less food, every year we bring food home.
Every year I vow to wear my costumes, every year I might wear one. I dress mylarry more often than myself.
Every year I vow to find better night time goggles. I fail.
Every year I worry I will not have enough art, every year I do.
Every year I swear I will take more pictures, every year I get so caught up I do not. I even forgot to take my camera to the burn. Yeah, like that.
Every year I vow to go dancing and stay up all night, I never do.
Every year I swear I will not get shitfaced at the Golden Cafe, every year I do. (thank you)
Every year we bring booze we do not drink, banners and flags we do not hang up, blinkies we scarcely use. I bring the notebook, I leave it in camp.
Best preparation thing I ever did? My virgin year, I sew quilted cozy-covers for the coolers. Genius. Thank you Martha Stewart.
Best trick? The blanket/quilt combo over the tent which reduces dust to near nothing. Second best? The clamshell/shade configuration we currently use. Third? Address labels on everything.
Worst? I never feel like I've done enough, experienced enough, chatted enough, saw enough art, nor been nice enough.
After eight years, we finally got a ride on top of an art car. Thank you Clay and the USS Nevada. I do have that right I hope. I should have written it down in that notebook I left in camp.
It is a process. Enjoy the journey. -

--bring a better dust filter
--close the tent vents before wandering
--work out for months before going
--explore on my own a LOT more, rather than always hanging with friends
--bring baby powder
--don't bring otter pops, unless I get dry ice
--bring a bit of carpet for my tent
--slow down -

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 8:31 AMGreat list everyone, Im saving it for next year, some gems in here.

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 9:41 AMFood I don't have to find ways to cook.
More water.
Twice as many socks (playa foot on Friday. ow!).
Better dust gear.
Camelbak.
Better playa bike.
Spray bottle cut with essential oil and vinegar.
More and better gifts (which will be on my list every year, I think).
...that's it! Everything else was golden. -

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 10:13 AMFood: Bring Less food, but better food. The steaks worked out well....the bacon was fabulous! We barely had breakfast...(the fried bologne sandwiches and moonshine were enough from this fabulous camp in our neighborhood) Salty and snacky foods worked well....We brought too much water, but I don't think i'd change that since we probably should have had more. Soda felt good on the throat since the dust storms were so bad. Peanut Butter and Jelly on Ritz crackers hit the spot and was super easy for a quick bite of protein and carbs. Croissants worked better than bread, and wraps were the best for a quick and tasty meal!
Tent: ZIP IT UP AT ALL TIMES WHEN OUT OF IT!!!!! We slept in dust the last couple of days....ugh....
Shower/Bog: I will use the camp shower instead of insisting on my own......and bring a large container for bog water instead of those little one gallon bottles.
Bring less clothing, and more fun outfits (didn't do the costume thing, I didn't understand, BUT NOW I DO)
Bring gifts for camp mates.....
Volunteer Less and NOT with the Gate!!! Perhaps the Rangers next year!!!
Cover my truck, it will NEVER be the Same!
El- Wire didn't work!!!! Must test thouroughly before Burning Man
BEST ADVICE/What really worked!!
Vinegar wipes - put cup of vinegar into bag of wipes and store in a double zip lock bag....This was by far the best thing I did....Handy for everything....
Vinegar in spray bottle for hair/actually i just poured it on after the first dust storm, because the shampoo wasn't working
Large white cooler from Costco.......UNBELIEVABLE.....I bought dry ice and block ice the day before we left, we were on the playa for 10 days....two days after I returned, the block ice was about half, but still there!!!!!
Croqs....I wore them the entire time with no socks.....They were great, except I have the strangest tan lines on my feet. I was diligent about using vinegar wipes and cleaning my feet before bed, putting lotion on them and wearing socks. They were simple, i had two pairs and they were easy to clean. I wore NO other shoes....I went barefoot the last couple days around camp....
Spray bottles with water and Lavender were refreshing and fun to share!
There is lots more....but I haven't fully decompressed yet, and I'm still processing everything!! I had to jump quickly back into my life and this is the first time i've even talked about Burning Man since i've been home! I had the most amazing time! -

Fri, September 12, 2008 - 4:17 PM"Tent: ZIP IT UP AT ALL TIMES WHEN OUT OF IT!!!!! We slept in dust the last couple of days....ugh...."
geez - you'd think i'd have learned this one after 3 years...nope!
one things that helps ALOT is to bring a small broom and dust pan.
after a biggie storm, i do some sweeping which makes the tent feel tidier.
it's really satisfying to toss out coopfuls of dust ...

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 4:42 PMand, dont forget to put your pillows in the middle of the bed, under the covers, and then cover your entire bed with a sheet or a banket that ya can roll back, take outside and shake the dust off, keeps the bed relatively clean if ya do that...

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 10:45 AMOnly thing i'd do differently would be to bring fewer clothes. I brought way to many clothing items. Probably enough for over a month! I want to go from 4 crates down to two. It's good to have choices, but if there are too many choices, it becomes hard to find things.
One thing I did differently from the year before and am very happy about:
Instead of bringing tons of food for elaborate meals, we focused on super easy to make but nutritious foods. Like lots of good canned soups. And healthy snacks. This cut down on the time needed for food prep, the effort of cooking and the water for cleaning. My partner and I were both happier with this new way (for us) of looking at food planning for bm.

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 11:09 AMNot really a virgin, but I *felt* more like a virgin this year because my veteran boyfriend didn't come with me this time. Things I'd do differently:
Not use a crappy tent I knew was half broken before I got to the playa. Monday demolished it and I was tentless until a friend brought one back from the outside world for me on Thursday. Instead, I'm shelling out big bucks for a canvas tent with aluminum poles. Nylon doesn't like the playa that much, particularly not cheap nylon.
Pack my care package for others earlier. The first part of the week, I figured my gift was a big contribution to a theme camp, and would just drag people back for a personal hair wash if I wanted to gift them something fun. Later in the week, I decided I wanted to do more personal stuff, since everyone was so wonderful to me, and my camp was experiencing a brief water crisis that made gifting individuals a little difficult.
Volunteer more.
This year, I managed to miss both entry lines and Exodus mess. I went early with a theme camp and left late with a guy who was driving a large semi. Hardly any wait, either way, and it was GREAT. I wanna do that again next year.

Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 9:54 PMNext time I'll get that extra insurance on the rental car so when a duststorm blows the neighbors carport into my tent, destroying it, and into my rental car, causing dents and chipped paint, I'll have the extra insurance to cover the damage when the Fallon Tribal Police lose the police report they took where the woman who owned the carport claimed full responsiblity, and the Pershing County Sheriff tells me they can't to a damn thing until Fallon Tribal police find the report and hand it off to them, which is on a laptop that died on the playa because of said dustorm on Monday.
Yup, that's my lesson. Get the damned extra insurance.
And bring a man (been working on that one for awhile now :-) -
-
Re: What would you do differently?
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 10:20 PMbut if you bring a man, how can you pick a fresh one?
I will volunteer next year! I couldn't do it this year - just too much stimulation - but next year, for sure...

Re: What would you do differently?
Sat, September 13, 2008 - 10:21 PMAs a virgin, I expected to find more social peeps out on the espanade, however it seemed like people were more into their own groups or the average joes walking in a city street. I made it a point to stay in one place and say "Hi" to people walking by. Sure, I felt like the greeter at WallyWorld for a while, but what the heck... cant hurt to do something I wouldn't do in another city. Just about everyone returned the quick & polite empty hello in return, though a hand full stopped for full conversation. I'd have to say those were the most fun, and next year I might try to expand on it.
Otherwise.... I like my Bike and didnt mind the cruddy playa. Been working the legs before the trip. Though I do realize when you walk, you do get a much more granular view of the city... you see the people and homes (and camps), vs a blur of suburbs.
Will definately shop on a different section of the thrift shops for costumes. Silly me, I was looking in the Mens section this year. Will bring less food, more beer. For all the other stuff I brought, thanks to dozens of great blogs with ideas, I was extremely well prepared, and got voted MVP in my camp for having just about anything that someone else wished they had brought. That was cool!

Re: What would you do differently?
Tue, September 23, 2008 - 7:45 PMDefinitely bringing at least one friend next year. Like Yogi says, it seemed people were more into their own groups, and it's muuch easier for a person like me to meet people when I already know someone. I eventually made some connections, but I felt like an outsider until around Friday or so.

Re: What would you do differently?
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 9:16 AMThis was my 1st burn.I was camped at 10 & A with Green Gorilla.....
While I did get in early on the Saturday and had time to acclimatise, on Monday I found myself completely overwhelmed by it all.
The next time I attend I would:
- Help out more ( I was so pre-occupied with making sure that myself and my younger brother lasted the week that I didn't get to do as much as I would have liked )
- Cycle the streets more and randomly visit the various camps to say Hi
- Take it easier the 1st couple of days (I was completely burnt out come sunday)
- try to experience and interact with more of the art
- Lock my bike up when not in use ( It was taken, along with my camelbak and headtorch from outside Opulent Temple on Tuesday night - I never saw it again )
- Just generally talk to more people than I did this year and make even more friends the next time
- Break in my New Rocks properly for the next time.....they cut the feet off me which was really painful having to walk from Opulent Temple to Green Gorilla once my bike was taken :(
Its all good though....I still had the most amazing week of my life and every single person I met was amazing.....

Re: What would you do differently?
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 2:15 PM^^^^yikes what a bummer. Letes hope for lots of rain this winter. Packed playa + bike lock = you can go anywhere you want any time with little effort. :)
A big mistake I have been making the last 3 years is, I pack everything too tight. I like to ride with a friend in my truck, so I make sure theres room for 2 peoples stuff. I end up cramming my shit into bins w/o a crack in the bin to spare. I realized this year that thats just lousy. I always have the hardest time finding shit, and it turns into a mess that frusterates. Instead of bigger bins, Im going to use my smaller bins, just more of them, to keep stuff seperate. Have me an EL wire/glowstick bin w/batteries. Have a seperate bin for toiletries and towels and ziplocs. If I have to drive to BMan alone, I cant help it.....I just cant cram my stuff so tight anymore. I actually just emptied a bin, and it was totally cracked from being too tightly packed.
Another thing I totally overlooked and I wont do it again: ORGANIZE before you go!
Put batteries in the packs. Put the Ipod boombox in a big ziploc. Get everything ready for use. THEN pack. You already gotta deal with so much when you get to BMan, every littlte step can help your sanity when youre actually there.
and along those lines, PUT UP MY HAIR and put my hair falls in BEFORE arriving to BRC! Thsi mondays storm taught me that! My hair was a clay clump the moment we arrived!! If I would of been set up in my head dressings already my hair would of been fine.

Re: What would you do differently?
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 11:47 PM*gas mask!!!!
*guy lines to tie down my shade so the pvc doesn't keep popping off the rebar
*tent cover.....less dust....but i kind liked being covered in dust
*less heavy/bulky clothes.....more skimpy clothes! i didn't wear the vintage prom dress i brought....toooo much! i rewore the same costumes even though i brought a whole bunch of different ones because the ones i rewore were the most comfortable in the heat
*something....SOMETHING that could allow my body to handle more...i couldn't drink in the day or really drink much at all due to the weather and they way my body reacts to it...but i dont know what that something could be
*two or three thermoses so i can lose one and still have a spare drink cup
*better socializing skillz.......even though ive gotten waaaaay better, i can still be kind of shy and that did effect me at BM
*volunteer next time for sure!!

Re: What would you do differently?
Tue, September 16, 2008 - 9:45 PMI didn't go this year, but we're already planning for next year. I feel like we finally got almost everything dialed in last year, so my bigh thing to do next time is keep it simple and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
A few random things: a new bike with a chain that actually works, a respirator for the big dust storms and simplifying all the stuff we bring, because we bring too much. Too much food, clothes, supplies. I swear we've lugged a good portion of our gear out there every year for three years and have never touched it.
Of course, I'm paranoid that the second I don't bring it will be when I finally need it. HAHA! -
-
Re: What would you do differently?
Sun, September 21, 2008 - 3:30 PMI would :
take less clothes
bring more cigarettes
not work so much -
-
Re: What would you do differently?
Sun, September 21, 2008 - 6:16 PMI felt fairly physically prepared as I'm a veteran camper and have camped in most conditions and for varying lengths of time..
Things I want to bring are...
A theme camp and art car
A kite
Homemade stilts (two 2x4's 4 bolts with wingnuts and a two short lenths of 4x4)
Body Paint
2-3 more costumes
Portable art
A better bike(beach cruiser or stingray)
make some sort of horns or headdress
bring a really awesome gift for all my fellow burners
my own camera
buy tickets early
More smokes
Pot
try harder to meet some of the goddesses I saw everywhere
find more places to dance(if that seems possible)
Zip my tent up everytime I'm not in it
Deal better witht he post man decompression thingie(i.e. not go on a 3 week bender afterward)
