Playa Names

topic posted Thu, March 13, 2008 - 11:26 AM by
This is only my opinion, so take it for what it is.

Having a playa name is not necessary nor required.

You can live perfectly happy and constructively out on the playa with your real name. Trying to force something that may not be sincerely feasible may end up having friends just call you by your real name regardless. When that tent is about to fly away, you'll most like hear, "Hey George, help me out here!" Rather than, "BlinkyPyroGoddess....whatever your nickname is, the tent is flying away!"

Playa names are fun, but they usually are constructed by other people who are not you. Coming up with your own nickname usually doesn't have the charm, nor grand story behind it. An example: a virgin to our camp decided his playa name would be Cronnik. We just called him Ben, because his self-titled nickname was lame. One day after imbibing in various substances, he was found on the open playa chasing after....well, nothing. When asked what he was doing, he said, "I'm trying to catch the sand gerbils." He was named Sand Gerbil after that incident.

By the way, Flint is my real name. "Dude, awesome playa name!" Thanks, I'll let my parents know.

*hugs*

Anti M came from a nephew who left a quick note ... Auntie Em from Aunt Margaret. MyLarry is just Larry. The playa names you in odd ways.

Flint is quite correct, any name you cobble together yourself, and I've seen some over-ambitious ones on eplaya from the newbs lately, well, it ain't likely to stick. Just go and let your name find you.

And if a playa name doesn't find you? It totally doesn't matter.

Jim, Kathy, Ripcord, Bob or SolarFlare... whatever your name, you won't be loved any more, or any less. It's who you are and what you do that counts. Just open up, be yourself, and let the playa have it's way with you.

ok, I must repeat myself: all virgins owe Flint extravagant gifts of bacon, chocolate and sexual favors. :)

    Flint,
so glad you posted this because I've noticed several virgins mentioning they didn't have a playa name yet. I think you're right on the money with your assessment.

We saddle any noobs that camp with us with a playa name they are sure to hate.

    Mine is Sugar Cookie.

Flint is a very kewl name...!! IRL and on playa, it rocks.

It's worth noting that there is a high probability your playa name will be given to you based on something you did that was either funny, wierd, stupid, or embarrassing.. or so utterly fantastic!!

I'm of the belief that your playa name should be given to you, not chosen by you. It seems a more natural way.

I don't have a playa name;.. just a tribe name, which flows over.
I'm sure a playa name will be forthcoming from the STUPID catogory,
    I hope not..

"I don't have a playa name;.. just a tribe name, which flows over"

I think that's how many people developed a "playa" name, which was really a party/social/subculture name that spilled over into Burning Man when they started doing that too. That name existed for them first and it just came with them to Burning Man.

Much of the burner culture thrives online. Which means we know each other by online interaction and screen names, whether it's Tribe or a regional list, not in person. It then makes sense when introducing yourself to use your screen name so people "recognize" you. And to have a playa name that is the different from your screen name, which is different from your birth name... well, that just starts getting crazy. It's impossible to keep everyone straight when you have to call them Bob in person, Big McLargeHuge online, and Mr. FruityPants on the playa. ;)

Ms. Dynomite (or Ms. Dyno, or Dyno for short) was never technically a playa name, as in a name given to me on the playa. It was bestowed upon me by an ex bf and became the name people called me in subculture social settings. So I use it for burner events because it's already established and it seems to fit the circumstance. And yes, people really do call me that in person, and during the other 51 weeks of the year. ;) I have several friends that are so used to calling me "dyno" that if I leave them a message with my birth name they don't know who I am.

As others have said, I think the best thing is to just do what feels natural. :) don't try to force a name or force one upon someone. and don't worry if you just go by Jane or Joe.

Dusty Nipples was not given to me. I chose it.

I adorned Tittimans wall at BM0? (my 3rd burn I think) He asked me to sign my name to my tittie paint blots, and I stood there with a fingerful of paint, a clean fresh pink exposed body, and a paint splat of my tits on a wall... ready to sign. I've always loved my nipples, and there they were in bright dayglo paint. I started to sign my name 'Kim' and it just felt so... blah. For no known reason, I signed 'Felonia Nipples'.

My campmates were like 'who the fuck is Felonia Nipples?'. We had a good laugh at my new imaginary 70's hooker alter ego. That night, just for fun, I used the name out loud. Of course, it didn't take long for people to call me Felatio Nipples. Of course, that wasn't gonna fly.

Over the course of the week, the whole nipples theme kept creeping back to me. At some point, there was a conversation where 'Dusty Nipples' was introduced. It wasn't a memorable moment, obviously. I almost forgot about it. Many months later, I moved to a new city. I got online to make new friends. I needed a screen name, and Dusty came to mind, so I used it. But in real life, I was Kim. I am Kim. I made new friends, and was invited to a regional. I was new, didn't really know anyone. I went by Kim, but there were a few moments where 'Dusty' slipped into the vocabulary.

Again, I almost forgot about it.

Then, at the next regional, I'm walking along and hear someone yell out 'Hey Dusty!'. I looked around and realized they were talking to me. It felt good, it felt like home.

My next Burningman I camped with a new camp, my 'sponsors' were the wonderful people I met when I moved here... who first met me online as 'Dusty Nipples'. They introduced me Dusty, and it just continued from there.

It's not an exciting story. No great 'playa name' memorabilia to offer. And I suspect there are a lot of playa names that just came to be somehow without a fab story behind it. Some are uber entertaining, some are just screen names, some are silly, some are self made, some are heartily earned. It's not a contest, it doesn't define 'coolness', it isn't necessary, it does bring color to our world.

Okay, turning on the keyboard breathalizer now. You might not hear from me again tonite :-)

I just discovered a nice 2005 Bordeaux... Chateau Luxeuil... for a really easy price. Yummy. But that's gone, so I'm topping off with an Espresso Martini before beddy-bye.

I used to rip them off my Grandma's trees by the armloads and fill the house
              Ah.. child hood memories!
              I've switched to a cognac.

                mmmmmm Cognac... mmmmmm

Thunderhawk. "Thunder " came mostly from my ex but a lot of people agree, I can yell really loud. Kinda comical really, family members say " Hey Glenn, yell for the kids, they won't hear me." And "Hawk" came from an ex fosterson who broke things all the time and always thought he cleaned up all of the pieces. Not all, I always found at least one. It got to be a game, he'd say he broke something and I would find a piece and tell him what broke. Like a game of stump the fosterdad!

                It's good enough for now.

I have 2 large Lilac trees, white and purple, if ya ever get this way ya can have all the lilacs you can carry...

my name was given to me YEARS ago, not on the playa, but is actually my native heritage name.. on the playa it was shortened to BARE, just fits.... as I am usually Bare,

Dusty. I am ever grateful for sitting atop your dusty nipples, and mighty tasty too, Hmmm, does that make em less "dusty" <grin>

Love Monkey... Hahhaha! great story, I remember the first time I met you, and you introduced yourself as Love Monkey... Good times.. and great memories..

the first year we took our virgin friend out there, she's on her 4th year now, she wanted a playa name so badly, she tried and tried to pick something and nothing stuck... finally, on thursday morning of that week, we were all getting ready to go work our morning shift at ICE and she was blowing bubbles in the morning sunlight....

I said "come on Bubbles, we need to get to work" She screamed THAT'S IT! BUBBLES! and for 4 years shes been known as bubbles... and it didnt hurt either that she liked that charactor from the powerpuff girls LOL!!!

My Charly always introduces himself as "Just Charly" and thats going on 12 years now..
                so, whatever works for ya...

Here's to how the playa just knows, or not, if your're going to be named and claimed by the dust...

                Bare

In 2000, I was chatting with several others around a burn barrel. We began discussing man's relationship with animals for whatever reason. I pointed out that "everyone loves monkeys." Really Drunk Guy(soon to be his playa name,) after chewing on it a bit, started chanting, "he loves monkeys, he loves monkeys," which soon became, "loves monkeys" and then, inexplicably, " love monkey." My camp mates called me that the rest of the week.

Yeah, I wish there was a better story, too. Still, it yielded a name I'm known by in many circles almost 8 years later.

        Thanks Really Drunk Guy.

Yep. It's also kinda useful to have an avatar that looks like you, you're more likely to be recognized. I use HeatherLyn on Tribe, and at Burning Man too, it's just my first&middle names. Since I'm from Southern California originally, I can't quite get rid of the Valleygirl when I say my Valleygirl-esque name (OMG LIKE TOTALLY MY NAME'S HEATHER!), so I initially started using HeatherLyn because it sounds less Valley coming out of my mouth.

Every time I think about changing my tribe name, I end up at an event where 2 or 3 folks come up to me and go "Hey, you're HeatherLyn from Tribe!" (funny side note, I get this more often at Burner parties where I'm dressed in a pink wig, or painted green, etc.... but I have felt like a minor celebrity to be stopped on the street in Berkeley by someone who recognized me in "street clothes", and randomly when I walked into an ATT wireless store here in San Francisco. Dude!)

Heh, I don't have a name per say really, I mean my first year, the camp called me "mom" with my bag of everything for everyone on me constantly, but even in real life, I just don't have nicknames. I think at one time people at my boarding school tried calling the Lorax, which is cool, but not me at all if they are talking about the character from the book. :P

I like the name that was given to me Joe Camel.... My camp mates used to call me that because i would carry a whole bar in a small back pack.. and when i say bar i mean like... cups, 3 types of beer at least 4 or more cans of each beer, mixers ( cranberry juice, orange juice, rockstars, red bulls, etc) , 4 types of booze or more, lights to keep me and my drinking masses safe at night, bullhorn, and about a gallon of water or more... so everybody was like " Dude your like a camel....wait i got it your Joe Camel... because your name is joe and you carry tons of booze.... so your a camel" I used to set up my bar between Esplanade and the Man at a random spot... and yell at people through the bullhorn to come have a drink with me.... it was fun actually i plan to do that again this year i named my self The Mobile Playa Bar... sigh i miss the playa! ARE WE AT BRC YET?!?!

My playa name is my Tribe name. I used to change my Tribe name to amuse myself, always using variations on Bob. One week it would be Bobtastic, then Bobalicious. At Christmas time it was Bells-on-Bobtail ring. Then it was Bobzilla and that just stuck. It's also what I use on air at BMIR and www.ShoutingFire.com I've also got the avatar, tons of people who I've never met know my dog head avatar.

...*L* I like "love monkey". and at least you didn't get dubbed "really drunk guy". ;)

and I like "Bobzilla". it sounds somewhat ominous, like you might suddenly break free and destroy Tokyo or something. or like you're so much Bob you're Bobzilla. ;)

and it just occurred to me from some of these stories that in one way bestowing a playa name on someone is a bit like a cautionary tale, some kind of behavioral modification through example. Don't act like an ass or a poseur boys and girls or you'll end up with a name like Gerbil or Reall Drunk Guy. ;) Like how you get people to eat their vegetables and clean up their room and pick up their moop and play nice with others. ;)

I got my playa name thru my campmates, they saw that i organized and planned out everything long before we hit the playa, but was the only one who got laid and had a Burning Man Summer Romance every time.
Just like on the tv show, "Love Boat."
So they named me, Julie the Cruise Director.

my virgin year in 02 the entire camp came running up to the porch all grinning after performing at (Space .. what? the guys that give you those amazing BM medalions for doing something original) . They threw me a wrapped candy and said while they were waiting thier turn they were eating these. They announced "you are Sweettart! you're sweet, and you're tart "(refering to my bitter outbursts around the wrenching divorce I was then embroiled in) . Well, it fit like a glove, and still does.
And I still have to tame the beast within every day....

My original tribe name was nikibean, which was given to me by my second boss evar, with whom I was totally in love (becky, sigh)... who flicked a coffee bean at me, which turned into "dude, look, I just flicked the bean" which turned into "flickibean" and then we looked at each other... "Nikibean!"
We just about fell over laughing. Ah, too much caffeine too early in the morning...

But Star is my name now. That evolved when I actually made it to the Playa. When I was little, I was really REALLY stubborn (like I'm not now). For about 3 months, I wouldn't answer to anything but "Star" or "Crystal" when I was 4 years old - one of my parents' *favorite* stories to tell others. I wanted so desperately to be something else, something sparkly and magical.
I told this story to my boyfriend and to other friends of mine in '06, when I first made it out to BRC. Roofus, my bf, looked at me and asked, "well, which do you feel is more sparkly, Star or Crystal?" I picked Star. He told me to say it with a pout. He approved...
We laughed, and yep, I became Star.
Works well as a Playa name and a sub name.
The best, though, was having a Burner and his kids in my boat on the Tuolumne this past summer- he had been at Otter Camp for the past 8 years, and he called me Star the entire trip after we exchanged Playa names. I felt like I was home, but still out on the river. Awesome.

In other places, I go by Nicole.

My boyfriend has a Playa name. When I started thinking I needed one, boy did I get a lot of grief! I had been going by my real name, 'Siryn', and everyone was like, your name fits and is so unique. We're not letting you have a different one, so consensus ruled!

So, for the time being I'm using my real name, Siryn.

I gave myself my playa name and I'm mighty pleased with it. I think it started as my Tribe name but it was chosen because it made me giggle and it suits me. I was glad to get something I liked because I didn't want to end up with some lame name that I hated that just wouldn't go away (the worst ones never do!)

My fiance's playa name started as Zeus when some person he met named him that. It doesn't really suit him and he has a penchance for zebra patterns, so it evolved into Z-man and finally Z. He likes it.

I don't think that playa names *have* to be bestowed on you and I don't think they have to stay the same either. I dubbed a virgin friend Grasshopper, totally by accident. For her second year, she had grown and evolved and redubbed herself Sprout and that suits this part of her life just fine.

As long as your name is there for a reason. An inside joke, something wired you did, something people can associate with you. So I think you can name yourself as long as it makes sense to others.

Gweana is not a playa name, but I name I used as a handle since logging on to early BBS's...I continued to use it due to lazyness and lack of desire to be creative enough to think of something else.

I'm only 27 (just wanted to clarify before my age was gu4essed due to my early internet usage). But on the playa I use my real name. If someone were to name me it would be an honor, but I neither require nor need a fake name to have fun.

      MadMaxine...
I dated a guy for a while... long enough to take him to Burning Man. One day we were out exploring and a dust storm came up. As I was riding into the wind, with some ridiculous outfit on (I think it was something like platform boots, black hotpants, and a furry vest) with a piece of sparkly fabric wrapped around my head and mouth, and goggles on, pointing stuff out to him and laughing maniacally at something (basically totally ignoring the dust and being totally in my element). He looked at me and said " I know who you are: you're Mad Maxine"

So there it is. It's a great name, and was given in the best spirit of the playa (i.e., you don't necessarily get to choose your name, or choose who names you).

      ...

Later in the week, my date, who was trying on the playa name of "Dr. Danger" (being a doctor and all), introduced himself as such to a guy who was proffering a plate full of tasty grilled hot-dogs, and then said "but you can call me Dange."

To which the guy said "oh great-- that's what we need, a Doctor who's too apathetic to pronounce his whole name. Sounds like the guy I'd want to call when I need an operation!" At which "Dange" laughed so hard he dropped the plate of hot-dogs, thus earning himself the playa name "Duh."
