Open Invitation: Random Acts of Postcards

This is an open invitation to participate in Random Acts of Postcards. It’s...

Low cost
Low maintenance
Has No Expectations
Fun and Participatory

It started as just me, and has evolved to include dozens of people, at BRC and a few regional burns. It’s a great vehicle to approach people you might not otherwise approach, and participate more overall. If you are a newbie, or shy about walking into strange camps and saying 'hi', this is the perfect project for you! All you need are postcards, stamps, a pen and enthusiasm.

We are not structured, we don’t function as a group... you participate as an individual, but are part of a group project. The more people who participate, the more people we connect all over the playa. If enough people are interested, we will have a group kick-off at Center Camp early in the week, and will stay connected throughout the week. But the offer to participate is open to all, at anytime. I simply ask that you follow the basic premise of the project.

It's called Random Acts of Postcards.

You will be engaging people to send postcards to, or receive a postcard from, a random stranger on the playa.

Here's how it works:

You are the Postcard Person. Bring an assortment of postcards to the playa. You walk up to a random person. Ask if they will participate in your Random Act of Postcards project (RAoP). Tell them... they will be sending a postcard to, or receiving a postcard from, another random person on the playa. You don't know who it will be, and neither do they. Someone will volunteer to participate... they always do.

There are a couple of different ways handle the cards, but I've found it easiest to keep 3 piles of cards in ziplocs...

1) cards that need a message to be written
2) cards that need a recipient address
3) completed cards ready to be mailed

Then you pull out a pile of postcards. As the Postcard Person, you determine if the participant should send or receive a postcard, or you may give them a choice. After doing a few, you’ll get the swing of what works best. The key to the project is they don’t get to choose who it goes to, or see who it’s from... it’s a blind send/receive.

If they are to RECEIVE a postcard, have them close their eyes and choose from a pile that is blank, or has messages already written on them. Don't let them see the image on the card, or the message. It'll be a surprise until they get it in the mail. Cover the message, if there is one, and have them self address the card (BRC address if it's early enough in the week for BRC Post Office to get it to them). Take the postcard back, thank them, and be on your way. Or hang around and chat! You just made a new friend!

If they are to SEND a postcard, have them close their eyes and choose from a pile that is blank, or that already has recipient names on them. Let them see the image on the card they've chosen, it can give them an inspiration for a message to write. Flip the card and have them write a message. If there is already a recipient address on the postcard, cover it up. You don't want them to know who it's going to. It's random. If they sign their name and camp on their message, maybe the recipient will come say hello once they get the card? You're connecting people!

I have found it helpful to use post it notes to cover up the side of the postcard I don't want them to see.

Then, you bring the cards to the BRCPO. You'll need to have some postage stamps for the cards going out to real world addresses, and be sure to bring goodies for the BRCPO folks... they can be rather surly :-) and you'll need to 'purchase' stamps for mailing within BRC city limits. The purchasing of BRC stamps is a huge part of the fun, by they way.

I know it sounds confusing at first, but once you do it, you develop a schtick and it's really entertaining. As I mentioned, we’ll have a kickoff early in the week to help ease you into it. Whether you do 5 postcards or 50, it’s all good and it’s sure to be fun! If you might be interested, join the Random Postcards tribe for more info.

http://tribes.tribe.net/randompostcards

We're almost home! And doesn't a postcard from home make everybody happy?

xoxo
Dusty

Since I have heard that bacon is oh, so delicious out on the playa, are there any tips and techniques you can use to help preserve your bacon?

Also, I am from Canada. Peameal bacon or 'back' bacon is pretty popular here. Do they sell this stuff in the 'States? I already know enough not to go around looking for Poutine.

Incidentally, 'save my bacon' is a popular expression in Canada. Instead of saying 'that really saved my ass', people would say 'that really saved my bacon.'

One of the first things I noticed about camping was that when you look up into the night sky, there are about a billion stars. In the city there is so much light pollution that you never get an opportunity to see any of these stars.

There must have been some people who have brought telescopes out onto the playa. How well do telescopes fare? Ideally I would like to leave one secured in a location for others to use, but I doubt that would be very realistic given the unpredictable weather.

Virgin Gift at the Greeters Station

I know alot of us here will be virgins this year, but I have been told that at the gate the virgins get a gift. Yet no one will tell me what kind of experience/gift it will be. They just tell me that it is something you will remember for days. Is this true? And can someone give me some hints.

I am REALLY excited to be going and to be a part of all of this, but VERY nervous about the unknown gift for virgins. I dont know if I should tell them I am a virgin at the greeter station or not. What do you suggest??

annual bicycle thread.

Should I bring a bike...?

YES!
The City is larger this year so a bike will be a very welcome convenience.

If your current real world bike is a cruiser or a beatdown old but reliable mountain bike, it's reasonable to bring it to the playa. There's a couple things you should do before you go out there, and when you come back so the bike is in ridable condition for next week and next year.
First: check out this tribe and read back some of the posts from last year if you can:
pedalplaya.tribe.net

I've done a lot of on playa bike repair in years past (no more- too many self entitlement issues). If you are looking to get a bike just for the playa, my advice is not to look for the cheapest bike; look for the bike in the best condition for the price, and MAKE SURE IT FITS YOU.
I don't know how many times I met someone who was told to 'get a bike', and s/he when to a thrift store and got a 16" BMX bike for her 5'10" height. She was miserable. very attractive, but miserable.

Look for a cruiser. Think simple and maintenence free. No hand brakes- just coaster/foot brakes. 26x2.125 or so tires. NOT the 26x1 3/8" size- they are too narrow. You want a fatter tire than that. At least a 1.75" size.

If you do pick up a mountain bike, make sure the brakes work. In a pinch, one will do, but both are better. And by functional, I mean when you grab the brake lever and squeeze it, the cable is drawn through the brake housing relatively smoothly and effortlessly, and that the brakes pads are hitting the rim squarely. and that the brake pads are in good enough condition for a week in the desert.

You only need one gear- the playa is completely flat, and derailluers and multiple gears get thrashed in the dusty conditions, causing them to operate poorly or not at all rather quickly. I'd reco finding an easy enough gear and keep it there the whole time. And forget about anything with suspension, esp higher end name brand suspension with elastomer springs- they will melt and turn to goop.

If you have time, ride the bike before you get to the playa so you know what the issues are, if any, and your butt will get acclimated to the seat.

Buy a spare tube that fits the bike. Buy another one for the poor schmo that didn't buy a tube. A cheapo cable lock is a good idea too.

You will absolutely need some sort of lighting on your bike or person this year. Blinky lights are 10-15bux for elcheapo; you can spend $300-500 if you want for a Niterider HID endurance racing light system. But Burningman aint a race. You need to be seen, you don't really need to see where your wheel is roing- it's flat, no potholes, etc.

To transport the bike out there, you might want to get a trunk rack- they hold 2-3, sometimes 4 bikes (for your friends bikes- you can be the bike donkey). Cheap ones cost 45-60 (Allen or Hollywood). Expensive ones are $150 (Saris Bones). The Bones racks are recycled plastic- really strong and very simple to put on your bike.

It sounds overwhelming, but it's really not. You can always ask the person who is selling the bike to add the tube and a lock to the bike so you are picking up a complete kit. At least that's what I did when I was selling burner bikes the past couple of years.

When you come back to the default world, spray the entire bike down with vinegar- and especially the chain. (some say keep the chain 100% dry- no water at all forever, but I think that's unrealistic esp in the PNW). So, spray it down, scrub the playa dust off the frame, brakes, drivetrain, saddle, handlebars, etc. Hose the bike down real well, and dry it off with a rag. lube the chain with a bike shop type dry lube and that should do it. Storing the bike indoors (like a shed or garage or your living room) will keep the bike operating better than if left on the side of the house. The worst case scenario is the chain will have to be replaced in the next 12 months. If it's a cruiser with 1 speed (or an internal hub), you need a 408 or 410 chain. KMC is a very popular brand with a range of options- rust buster, models, stainless steel, chrome, and cheapo black models. They run 8-30 bucks.

I'll keep posting to this thread if I think of anyhting else. as always, ask questions.

What did you not bring and lamented about it?

Hi Everybody!

I actually posted this earlier this year before BM. Many people found it to be helpful. So, as I stumbled across '08 virgins tribe, I thought that some of you might want to read it as well.

By the way, this post, and the feedback I got from it was part of the inspiration for a one-man show about my experiences at Burning Man that I am doing here in Los Angeles. If you want more info about it, go to http://www.ohtony.com and click on the "Burner: Tales from the Playa" link.

Although there are a few who will proclaim their right to walk the playa at night without any illumination, I highly recommend against it. Bikes, art cars, and other pedestrians can and will fail to see you, and run you over.

El Wire costumes, blinkies, headlamps are all good. I suggest glow sticks and bracelet only if you can't figure anything else out, but they are pretty moopy. Light your self at night so I don't run you over!

Shipping service from Seattle to BRC

Our camp encourages and supports ride sharing by providing an alternative way for drivers and passengers to get their stuff to and from BRC. We're a bunch of Seattle Burners committed to providing bio-diesel shipping to our community. We think that consolidated shipping and ride sharing can substantially decrease the environmental impact of the event and possibly shift the way we think about traveling.

For example:
- If you're driving: Shipping two 22-gallon bins, your water & your bike makes space for at least 1 more person to share your gas and keep you entertained.
- If you're riding: Shipping four 22-gallon bins, your water, 40lbs. of gear & your bike lets you be a passenger with almost nothing to haul.

How It Works
• We haul almost anything (no Haz-Mat!).
• You reserve space on our truck through our website: www.burngreenexpress.com. We take your online payments through PayPal.
• We have a storage unit in Seattle where you drop off your gear any day in August. The address and access codes will be emailed to you.
• We leave Seattle Thursday, August 21, and arrive at BRC on Sunday, August 24.
• We handle load-in and load-out of the truck. You pick up and drop off your gear in Seattle and BRC.
• Our camp location will be emailed to everyone who ships with us.
• We leave BRC Monday September 1. You pick up your stuff at our storage unit between September 5 and September 29.

check out our site, or message me personally if you have any questions! see you there!

Real Burners Do Not Watch The Man Burn!!!

2005 was my virgin year. I camped and road up alone. On Burn Niht I was invited to dinner by my next door neighbor, Foto and Serenity. Foto was a photographer and Serenity was his wife. We had dinner adn talked about the world.

When 9:00 PM came rolling around I told then it was time for the Burn. They said they do not go to the Burn anymore. They said that real Burners do not go to the Burn. I was like... err... I did not come all this way for someone telling me not to watch the Burn.

Now here is the strange part. Each time when I tried to excuse myself to leave they would stop me some way. It was something out of a movie. When I got up they has some excuse to keep me there.

I was not going to miss the Burn. So I got up and just walked out. I got to the Man just when the ceramony was just starting. I had no idea why they tried to keep me. I guy it was their "art". Anywho... I did not pau $250 and came a long way just to miss my frist Burn.

Cross

BTW...

I never seen these people again.

Always ask first

From the post about photography, and also thoughts from the "if you don't ask it's stealing" thread..

""We'll leave that discussion up to you and Bob...but seriously, ask first.""

Yeah, most of the time, you don't need to ask about taking a photo, but there are certain times that are VERY important to ask first.

Anybody doing anything illegal, unlawful, or with age restrictions (even if you don't think it should be)... This includes sexual activity, drug usage, general nudity, etc.

Anything with a minor. Yeah, kids on the playa can do some of the cutest shit, but unless you know their parents well, you need to ASK THEIR PARENT. I know several parents who would never want their EX to have photographic proof that their kid was at BM...

Of course, often times, you know that if you ask, it will ruin the photograph. What I normally do in these situations, is to take the photo, and then as soon as possible, show the subject the photo. This requires you having a camera which will allow you to show the picture (polaroid, digital with LCD screen). If they ask you to delete it, do so. Or give them the polaroid picture as a gift.

That applies to photography, but in general, you need to ask permission. If you're making out with a nice hottie, and you want to step it up, you had better ask. If you want to test drive somebodies art-car, ask. If you want to sit down in somebodies private area of their camp, ask. You want a drink of that delicious beverage, ask.. etc...

i would prefer just to share with someone else and NOT rent it or drive it myself.

i already have my ticket, a ride, my meals, water, and my camp (but can move and register with yours for the purposes of sharing an RV or you can join us at the PolyParadise/Human Carcass Wash camp).

thanks!

One of my biggest problems at burns in years past has been a lack of bike legs. If you don't ride a bike on a regular basis, when you get up there and ride around all day and/or night, you discover all kinds of muscles in your legs, and they're all saying "OW"...
Now I always hit the exercise bike every other day for the couple of months leading up to the man. It makes a huge difference! Riding is much easier, and it also conditions your ass for a bike seat. And hey, it's good for you!
Get out there and ride, y'all!

Fireworks are not permitted on the playa. Leave them home.

1. They create lots of moop
2. Ones that go up, must come down. I've seen bottle rockets land on peoples tents burning big holes in them. There's also lots of fuel around so it's a safety concern.

Burn Night Recommendations

Saturday night, the night that the Man burns. Before all the excitement revs up, before you hike out and watch the man burn, here are some things to think about.

1. Leave your bike at camp. I know it seems that the man is a long way but really consider walking. It's very difficult to both find a safe place to put your bike once you reach the man and FIND your bike once the man falls. Keep in mind that a cluster of bikes lying on the open playa is a HUGE tripping hazard and makes things very difficult for art cars to navigate.

2. Food and Water. Don't forget to bring some water. You may be out at the man for a while so bring water and something to snack on. just some cheese crackers or maybe a nutrition bar.

4. Sit Down!!! If you find that you're within the first 5 or 6 rows of people, please sit down. Let the people behind you have a chance to see everything. Also, it helps the fabulous Rangers who are trying to maintain a safety perimeter by keeping "runners" from getting a running start. If you can, encourage people around you to sit down too. Besides, it's gonna be a while till he burns. Relax, sit down, you're gonna be there a while.

5. Lock it up. This isn't a huge problem but something to consider. Look around your camp before heading out to the man. Put any valuables in a safe place (locked in your car, hidden in a sock in your suitcase, ect). Theft is very rare on burn night but it can happen. Do know though, there are a number of Rangers who will be sacrificing their ability to watch the Man burn to walk around Black Rock City and keep an eye on things for ya.

6. Don't get toooo f*cked up. It might seem "soo frigg'n cool to be on (insert inebriant of choice) when the man burns!!!" but take it easy. Burn night is gonna be full of emotional energy and chaos plus, you've just spent a week out in harsh conditions. Try not to over do it.

7. Have a group plan. If you're going out to watch the Man burn in a group, have a loose plan for the aftermath. Once the man falls, it's gonna be hectic and chaotic. It's possible that your group may get separated. Have a loose plan. Something like "If we get separated, lets meet at (insert cool ass camp on the esplanade) afterwards". Try to not make your plan too ridged. For instance "If we don't see you at (meeting spot) by 12 midnight, we'll assume you found something cooler to do. See ya back at camp eventually." or some such.

If you end up missing someone, try not to obsess over it too much. They may have just hooked up with a hottie and are having a grand time. If a wayward friend doesn't surface by Sunday, then you might want to check with the REMSA medical tent behind the Center Cafe or with the Black Rock Rangers right next door to REMSA.

Have a great burn everyone.

Just to reiterate what you already know.
Sunblock ( and lip balm with spf) , comfortable goggles to keep out the dust , dust masks ( get the expensive industrial grade ones with the little vent on the front), a wide brimmed hat with an adjustable chin strap, comfortable walking shoes, a means of carrying water and some kind of provisions for the day ( burners are famous for " just making an ice run" or some quick thing and getting sidetracked for the rest of the day), "Piss Clear" This is good advice as well as the name of BRC's former alternative newspaper ( great reading).
http://www.pissclear.org/
Stake down everything in your camp that you do not want to have blown away. Windstorms come up strong and sudden.
If you're caught in a duststorm , don't drive or ride your bike , hunker down because it probably won't last long.
Watch your booze and RX intake. The dry conditions , heat and altitude can lower your tolerance levels.
Keep your cameras and video in large ziplocs til you need them.
Read your survival guide , don't speed on the highway ( especially through Wadsworth and Nixon)
Be very careful if you absolutely have to pull over on hwy447 , there are no shoulders or very soft ones!
Don't put anything in the portopotties except toilet paper and your own ickies.
Law enforcement is there for your protection , but do not flaunt illegal drug use as they are there to enforce all county , state and federal laws and must do so even if they may not agree with them.
Don't try to stow away a friend in your vehicle to save on ticket money , the gate people have seen it all before.
Make a checklist and check it twice! Here are some good examples. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=burning+man+checklist
Bring a little cash for ice , but leave the expensive jewelry at home.
Bring and use a lock for your bike.
Bring an extra tire tube and chain if possible and tools for maintenance and repairs. Learn how to fix a flat.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=bike+tire+repair
Bring lots of EL wire , blinkies , bike lights , glo-sticks whatever to illuminate yourself at night. Forget about it being someone else's job to avoid you , this ain't anytown USA. Don't be a "Darkwad"

More later and from others I'm sure ! Got shit to do " The man burns in 40 days"
~Wendell and Joie~

Tip: If you're considering experimenting with hair removal (shaving, waxing, depilatories) on "virgin" parts of your body, don't leave it until the last minute. Try it *now* to see how your skin reacts and to give yourself time to adjust. The last thing you want is an itchy, bumpy rash when your goal was a smooth, new you. You might also consider trimming and/or body hair bleaching as alternatives to shaving.

This applies equally to boys and girls. Now, back to a little manscaping for that fresh, summer feeling...

Sembazuru will be auctioning off one BM08 ticket at our fundraiser on August 2nd in SF ..... Il Pirata - 9p-2a.

Bidding starts at $150 - it's a $250 value ticket .... must be present to win, must have cash in hand to win. If you, or someone you know needs a ticket, this is a prime opportunity to possibly get one at a good price, which will also support getting our Temple of Community to the playa.

Also, we're raffling off a loveseat that will BE delivered to you on playa, AND picked up from you at the end of the week..... all you have to do is kick back and relax on the loveseat all week long. Many other raffle items could be won as well. Do not need to be present to win raffle items, but do need to get tickets before the lovely prizes are gone gone gone.

Please see www.templeofcommunity.com for more details

I'm a virgin this year and I wanted to know:

Can I bring my dog?
Can I sell my hand-made jams at the event?
Can I bring my gun for protection?
Can I plant a tree to support world hunger?
Can I burn all my trash before I leave?

I gift you these really stupid questions as an example of the opposite of Radical Self-reliance. I'm sure some of you will have more fun with them then others... I was inspired by the Survival Guide we just got in the mail. I've read it twice now. Fun stuff. It was much easier to follow then the website for me, but I read that too. I think (hope) we're on the right track, but it does bring to light that there may be many unprepared. Thanks to everyone here who has been lending their advice and experience to us over the months. I can't wait to repay you on the playa! Counting the days...

Virgin Lamplighter Night

The Lamplighters in years past has not organized their volunteers much. This year we are trying an idea for having different groups sponsor a night of lamp lighting. Now you might ask your self "What is lamplighters?". Well we are the oldest and largest performing art spectacle, and the oldest public service camp on the playa. Just like any other city we need some type of city street light system, and that's what we offer. Each night at 5 o'clock we gather and prepare over 800 lanterns. We then go out into the city in a procession and hang the lanterns high in the air. Monday night is a great night to be a lamplighter because at 10pm after we hang the lanterns, our village throws the biggest and best party on the Playa- The Lamplighters Annual Sangria Soiree
What I would like to do is have a Burning Man 2008 Virgin Lamplighter night. If you are interested in learning more about the lamplighters

http://www.burningman.com/participate/lamplighter.html

If you would like to volunteer for the 2008 Virgin Lamplighter night please email me at amangielangomat@yahoo.com

Thanks
Boxes with Bears

PS: We need around 150 people each night. We are accepting all people who would like to volunteer any night. Email me if interested.

How much water will a person (each person) need to bring, or have to last them for the week?

My understanding is that you should drink at least a litre (about four gallons) of water every hour. I'm not sure if this would include the hours when you are sleeping, but I am sure that those eight or ten liters could be used for washing dishes or showers.

Of course, I understand that refilling your water in Gerlach or Empire is verboten, since water is life in the desert and the water supply in these two towns comes from underground wells.

I am also wondering about the possibility of using solar stills to reclaim gray water and possibly urine to transform into potable water. Or at least water for washing with.

A broke nervous virgin

Okay, so I bought my ticket to Burning Man after reading through the website, and obsessing over numerous blogs and what not. I was really confident with going, bought my ticket, and now I have total cherry popping anxiety. I'm a very very poor girl, and I thought I'd be able to handle the costs, but now I'm getting nervous about it. Most of my money obviously went to buying the actual ticket. Pretty much all I have left is money for water/food and gas. I have written out a list, and have been over the survival guide, and I'm sure I have enough to comfortably camp.

HOWEVER I'm a total giver, and I'm scared my silly little tent, and small food supply will restrict my generosity in a material sense. I don't want to be deviated from the community because going is a bit difficult financially for me. Should I be stressing out about this?

Honestly, I'm just scared about jumping into this head first. I'm doing a bit of breaking out of my shell, and this is going to be the first time going out and interacting with people in almost a year( Huh huh I'm a hermit ). Are people very willing to befriend virgins, and guide them? If so. Befriend and guide me. Haha

I'm a photographer by trade and will be driving to BRC. I can help bring camp stuff to the playa and would gladly give a ride to a camp member from the Bay Area who needs one. I'm a non-smoker and am able and willing to contribute to camp activities

I have mentioned my project before, it is an art gallery where you can adopt small art pieces and take them home with you. Or you may donate art so ti can join a new family. Looking for Bad Art. Lost Art, Found Art, Art which needs to be punished? The come to Hushville and find the Home for Wayward Art.

http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?t=23074

Also if you scroll through far enough you'll find pictures of the Home at various regionals; I have a whole blog entry with pictures of the Home from each year. Currently documenting The Bucky Project. No, the Buckys are not up for adoption, they are a separate installation. The HFWA blog was posted April 25th, so you'll have to hit "older posts" about three or four times to find it.

My brother is arriving a day later, would he be able to drive down the streets and get to my camp or do you get directed to the next availble camp spot ?

BMIR - Burning Man Information Radio

BMIR broadcasts at 94.5 FM on the playa. While some people say "no one listens to radio on the playa" that just isn't the case. There are numerous stations on the playa. I recommend you bring a portable FM radio for your camp. Many folks bring a cheap walkman type FM with headphones for wandering out around the playa and city. We make great entertainment during the hot of the day while your lazing around your camp if you don't have anyone spinning.

BMIR broadcasts 24 hours a day. We have music, Black Rock City news, event and weather information, interviews, talk/discussion programs, tips on keeping cool and comfortable as well as helpful reminders about what we'd rather you didn't do while you are on the playa. Have a really interesting project your working on? Do you just want to rant about some cause your devoted to? Come by and we'll get you on the air. If something big happens in the default world we'll let you know. I remember announcing that Alberto Gonzales had resigned as Attorney General (and there was much rejoicing).

Is your theme camp throwing an event? Come by and record an announcement and we'll promote it! We are open Monday thru Friday from 12N to 4PM for you to record event promos. We'll help you do it or if you record something before you get to the playa put it on a CD and bring it with you. Or email it to me Bobzilla@Burningman.com BEFORE August 17th.

BMIR is the BMORG's radio station and functions as an integral part of the emergency alert system on the playa. If there is severe weather or some type of emergency, tune in for official information.

We also stream on the internet, so starting on approx. August 21st or 22nd we will be live from the playa. Tune us in on your computer while your at home getting ready, to find out what's going on in the city. www.bmir.org

During Exodus, we work directly with the exodus team. Tune in to find out if it's a good time to leave and how long it will take you to get to the highway.

We are located in center camp right next to playa info. Look for the radio tower. We have a nice shaded lounge with a couple of couches and a roof deck . Come by and hang out or stop by for a quick hello. We always have something cool to drink and would love to show you around the station. We have a cocktail party everyday at 5P with a live DJ. You are invited.

Hope to see you on the playa.

I recently bought a 5 gal. solar shower. It heats up extremely well, but is insanely heavy. Does anyone have any shower set-up advice. Right now its hanging from an outdoor umbrella stand, which works pretty well. Unfortunately, in a strong wind i'm afraid the umbrella might take off....I'd love to hear how you all set up your showers and or keep clean. I'm not very interested in baby wipes, I prefer to shower and will bring enough water to accomplish this. I also have the evap pool taken care of.

VIRGINS MUST KNOW!!! Wadsworth/Fernly to BRC

Every seasoned Burner know that the final leg of your journey from Wadsworth/Fernly to BRC you must be real cool. As the popularity of BM increases to does the police presents. When you are on this final stretch of road you MUST OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS!!!

THE COPS WILL BE OUT THERE AND THE WILL HIT HARD!!!

I have seen and hear stories of cars/trucks being searched. Both legally and illegally. Also, they have amost every K-9 in Nevada out on that leg of the journey.

The police can be anywhere. As a rule they are most heaviest in the town that you pass though. When you see a 25 MPH sign then go 23 MPH. If you go 26 then the police will nail you. At stop signs do a complete stop. NO ROLLING STOPS. THERE WILL BE A COP HIDING AT ALL STOP SIGNS!!!.

If you have to pass someone make sure you have the right to pass. The cops know the poplular place where people make illegal passes and they will be there. Especially if there is no passing over a hill. The cops will be hiding on the other side waiting to bust you.

Remember, the cops are looking for that "BIG LOAD". They know people are trafficing "stuff". From something personal to suppling a whole rave for the duration of BM. They know this and they are looking. Also, this is not California. They pot cards are no good. Matter of fact they still hang people in Nevada. So don't even try it.

Drive safe. Drive Slow. This will help you stay out of a Nevada jail.

Cross

"Burner: Tales from the Playa" now playing in a browser near you!

After Burning Man 2007, I wrote and performed a one-man show called "Burner: Tales from the Playa". It was a personal account of my six visits to Black Rock City. For various reasons, including a fire (!) at the venue, there were only three performances.

The last performance took place on February 2, 2008 at Abundant Sugar in Los Angeles. Many people still ask me about "Burner", tell me how much they liked it and ask when I am going to do it again. Maybe because it's July, but Burning Man is again in my head. I decided to finish the editing the video and post "Burner" to get everyone even more in the mood for Burning Man.

So, I present to you, "Burner: Tales from the Playa". I invite you to watch it, download it to your iPod and share it with your friends. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it's creation.

As for this year's burn, I bought a ticket on the first day (#130, beechez!). But now, it seems that the theme of this year's event is more fitting than ever. "The American Dream" is being able to afford to go to Burning Man.

This year's return home will be much more expensive than previous years and I'm not sure I can swing it alone. But then, as I was working on the edit, it occurred to me that I'm really not alone.

I've got you.

So, if you like "Burner" and you would like to help me get home this year, click on the "Help send OhTony to Burning Man 2008!" link .and donate any amount that you feel comfortable with. But, if you do donate, I'm warning you. Be ready to get some love if I run into you on the Playa.

Thank you all for having me as a part of your tribe.

You ever walk into a party and realize there is an inside joke going around that you cannot understand?

As a Virgin, I'm getting a strong sense of some kind of bacon-related joke that I'd love to understand. Everywhere I read about Burning Man, I see bacon references. Perhaps it's obvious to some, but for those of us with our cherries intact, can someone please explain what's with all the bacon?

Thanks in advance...

Radical Inclusion

One of the ten main principles of the Burning Man experiment is the idea about radical inclusion. From the Burning Man website, it is defined as:

"Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community."

This is a fine notion, and something very powerful. However, it does not mean radical acceptance. Just because I have no issue with you being here, doesn't mean that I necessarily have to like you. To use an analogy: freedom of speech. I respect someone's right to say what they want, but I don't have to like what they say.

If there is a group of people that come to Burning Man that I'm not real fond of, I'm not going to shoo them away, and most likely I will not be in their presence or socialize with them. I do hope that what ever various groups that do attend get something out of the event, learn, understand, and grow from it, but it doesn't mean that I have to be part of that experience directly.

*hugs*

Protest the RNC!

Hello everyone,

My name is Steevi and I'm new to the community. I'm excited beyond words to attend BM this year for the first time. (so far I'm going solo and not sure what to expect so any pointers would be welcome and appreciated- but that's a bit of a side note..)
I live In Southeast San Diego in a collective of activist/artist/musician/revolutionary-minded adventure bodies and we're planning on attending the protests at the RNC and DNC this year.
We've been preparing educational workshops and have been searching for like-minded individuals in the San Diego area who are also interested in attending, with some difficulty.

I'd also like to set up a workshop-informative-booth-type thing as a sort of installation at BM this year if that's possible and was wondering if there's anyone in San Diego who'd be down to get into it with me or who knows anyone who's planning on attending the RNC and BM this year.
Also, I'm interested in looking into organizing rideshares for people trying to get to the RNC after Burning Man, since they're right after each other this year.
BM: Aug 25- Sept 1st
RNC: Sept 1-4th

Any input is welcome and profoundly appreciated.

Hope everyone's loving their summer.
Many thanks. Much love.
and all be well.

Ticket fraud?

Yes, there are scalpers and forgers and liars out there. Sad, but a reality. If purchasing your ticket from anyone other than the BMORG or an authorized outlet, or a burner you trust implicitly who lets you see the tickets, Be Careful!

There is a seller on ebay who MIGHT be selling bogus tickets. Read the eplaya thread before bidding.

http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?t=24736

Also on the main Burning Man site, there is a FAQ on tickets and the method for selling, verification and/or transferring names on will calls.

A second note: UPS insurance claims must be processed by the seller ... UPS lost mine, I didn't contact paypal in time, and the seller flaked on me. I don't think it was an intentional rip-off, but I was out a full price ticket a couple years ago. Be wary, be mindful, be informed!

BLM Closure Order

Note, there is a large section on Alcohol and drivers being within reach of
an open container, whether they are drinking or not and even if they are not
actually driving. This would be important to art car drivers. If you are
setting in the drivers seat and can reach an open container, it is illegal.

Typically, there is no need to read this stuff, but if you'd like to know, you can. There were some questions about underage drinking, and here is the answer that we gave, reinforced by fancy wording.
any alcoholic beverage to a person under 21 years of age on public
lands.
(b) This section does not apply to the selling, handling, serving
or transporting of alcoholic beverages by a person in the course of his
lawful employment by a licensed manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer of
motor vehicle on public land while under the influence of alcohol,
narcotics, or dangerous drugs.
(b) In addition to the prohibition found in 43 CFR 8341.1(f)3, it
is prohibited for any person to operate or be in actual physical
control of a motor vehicle while:
(1) The operator is under the combined influence of alcohol, a
drug, or drugs to a degree that renders the operator incapable of safe
operation of that vehicle; or
section the operator shall submit to one or more tests of the blood,
of this section. If the alcohol concentration in the operator's blood
or breath at the time of testing is less than alcohol concentrations
specified in paragraph (b)(2) of this section, this fact does not give
rise to any presumption that the operator is or is not under the
influence of alcohol.
(2) The provisions of paragraph (d)(1) of this section are not
intended to limit the introduction of any other competent evidence
bearing upon the question of whether the operator, at the time of the
alleged violation, was under the influence of alcohol, or a drug, or
drugs, or any combination thereof.

Busted?!?! At Burning Man??

Yes, there are cops at Burning Man. They are mainly there to keep you from causing trouble, but if you do something stupid -- i.e., spark up a doobie right in front of them -- you will be arrested.
The chopper ride to Reno is fun I hear, but I doubt being in the Reno pokey is very pleasant. Especially if you end up in there with green spandex pants, a gold lame vest, and pink doc martens...

Take your Drugs!!

I know that this has been posted elsewhere, but this is serious.

If you are on any perscription medication, take your meds as scheduled while at Burning Man. I know DUH again, but every year, people who are on anti-dipressent, anti-psychotic, etc. drugs attempt to go off of them while at the burn. DO NOT DO THIS!!

If you are on a perscription of any kind, I highly suggest getting a medic allert bracelet. It is also not a bad idea to have a bracelet/dog tag, laminated card/ etc. stating your name, camp name, location if known, medical condition, and emergency contact number in real world. People are found unconcious each year, and it's nearly impossible to locate camp members or family at home without one.

a comment about some language in the "dirty little secret (sic)" topic, and elsewhere

just a note here about our language and word choice. Please try to not denigrate a group of people here, or on the Playa. one person wrote:

>>Though I'm not crazy about frat boys and ravers, maybe if they show up enough they'll get a clue about existance...<< in the "dirty little secret" post

i don't want to single out that person -- plenty of people have use "frat boys", in a number of comments in that thread and others.

My point is that the Burning Man experience is a chance to be individuals dealing with individuals. If I'd used niggas and wetbacks, faggots and lesbos, kikes and hebes, or bitches and ho's, then many people would have been (justifiably) upset. the same is true of "frat boys and ravers".

When i was in college i was in a fraternity - that makes me a fratboy. i've been to plenty of raves - that makes me a raver (and i have the kandee bracelets to prove it). frat boy is not an acceptable word - to me - to describe any particular set of attributes beyond collegiate affiliation. i can't even begin to imagine how "raver" can be used pejoratively at the largest outdoor electronic music festival that I've ever been to, so I suggest dropping that unless you're referring to "happy people wearing bright colors and having fun with great music."

So, I am obviously a virgin, and have decided to go this year, despite horrible social anxiety. I am going with my boyfriend and have read various posts on how BM affects relationships and we have agreed to take the necessary risks, though I am still terrified. I am anxious, excited, curious, and mainly overwhelmed. Does anyone have advice for a shy girl on the playa? I have read the posts about how the event intensifies all emotions and I am (hopefully) prepared for this, as I am a very (hyper) sensitive person...(takes a deep breath)....and advice on how I can make this a pleasurable experience rather than a personal Hell?

Borrowing without asking is still stealing

Ok, I know most of you read the subject line and went DUH, but things are not always as they appear out there.

It is stealing to help yourself to a cooler without getting permission. Most will be happy to share a frosty beverage with you, but there are NO free for all camp coolers even in the largest of theme camps.

It is stealing to help yourself to a drink at a camp bar without asking, same rules as above apply. Wait your turn, be polite, and take what you get.

It is stealing to grab a random bike when you need to race to the porta potty, except if it is a "yellow bike"

Most problems occur when there is a free for all vibe going around a camp. Respect eachothers property, ask for permission, have camp rules and boundaries.

Hi All,

A close friend of ours got his ticket and now can't go to Burning Man.

Since he is not on tribe, (he is a 73 year old retired medical Dr who actually did go 2 years ago) I offered to list it here to see if he can sell it (at a loss) to some deserving Burner.

If interested, shoot an e-mail to me and I will put you in touch with him so you can pay him and he can mail it to you.

Much thanks
Dirty Little Secrete about Buringman

Bill balances on a foot ladder trying to drill a hole in the fiberglass at a strange angle. It's pretty strait forward but he hold his breath anyways. Ted is picking through the record collection. Past Pink Floyd, consideres the soundtrack to Flash Gordon and finally settles on the Infectious Groves.

B~ You know, every year I, as soon as I get back I make a list of things I love and hate about the playa. But I think this year I figured out what really both inspires me and what totally turns me off.

T~ Yeah like having every cool thing you own permanent dusty.

B~ It's the whole concept of freedom. The American dream is all about freedom which takes it's forms to both exterms of behavior. On one side, you have people who see the opportunity of their freedom to produce. On the other, they use the opportunity of freedom to consume. BUt the consumers are unaware. They think they are producers becuase they are pressent.

T~ But everybody is a participant right?

B~ Participants yes. Producers, not so much. I mean a guy can pay twelve other guys $400 bucks and take turns driving an RV to the event, dress up in a costume and spend the entire week trying to ingest as many drugs as his system will withstand, and then pack up, go home and think to himself, I was a part. I Participated. I wore the outfit, I meet people, I vollunteered and I celebrated. Requirement fullfilled.

T~ I see where you are at. Meanwhile another dude can see the opportunity of freedom to explore what the value is of planning, building a work of art, having to install it, interact with the help of others and become intertwined with experiences beyond bare minmum participant requirements. So what your talking about is sheer quality of participant.

B~ Thats one way to look at it I guess. Like the whole road being assosiated with automobiles. Clearly the message is about American dreams beng assosiated with the concept of mobility. A whole country built on the dream of going where you want to go, whenever you what to go there. Cars equate Freedom to much of american Culture.

T~ But what about about the reasons to go anywhere or which freedoms are sacrificed to provide mobilty? The ability to be mobile is so alluring. So entertaining. So seductive.

B~ Exactly. Forget that we build a society that is dependant on automobiles for much of it's operation, but people's potential become tied to their mobility. The carless become unsucessful, undesireable and shuned. Try to tell someone you refuse to be dependant on a car in a job interview. You'll get the full monty alright ,from the rear.

T~ But what does this have to do with Burningman. Are you saying that everyone who walks around the playa is participating and art cars are just spectating?

B~ No the exact opposite. Quality Participants don't just help out, they build. They make shit. They make shit happen. They maximize their opportunity to express their freedoms in some form beyond the nessesary.

T ~Dude, there are thousand of people at Burningman who dress in costume, dance their asses off, do some yoga, try to get laid, pick up the trash they notice with smiles on their faces and hugs all around that do not make anything. They are wonderful people who produce nothing but a good vibe. Are these people really the enemy?

B~ Precisely. Every year I come home and I can see it now. The real gifts I recieved were much bigger than a smile, a hug or a cool costume. It's not a peacful happy vide that celebrates the profound acts of freedom to me. I get that shit at home.
It is the blood swaet an tears of someone who built something. Had a vision and set out to accomplish that vision in manifest. It was the guy who spent days and hours giving a couch a motor. It was the girl who bruoght 500 lbs of frozen carrots to pass out in the deep playa on the hottest day of the week.

T ~ It's the team of people who hauled up a thousand plastic bottles to build a sculpture of the statue of liberty. The people who worte a Musical and put on a hour long performance. It's the people who tried to build a bicylcle charriot and pretended to be ancient Romens lost in the dessert all week.

B~ It's not the ravers, or the frat boys, of the hippies, or the playa barbies or the old timers, or the creepy photography people. It's all of us. We can all look beyond what we expect of ourselves and make more. Action. Production. We can be more than free, we can express that freedom in ways that can be seen from space.

T~ Good luck with that. You can't even post on Tribe without someone going on about how agrressivness is a total bummer man. Tell these people that Bunringman can be more than a party and you are messin with their high bro. They resist suggestions out of the party line yo.

B~ Yeah, it;'s too bad to. Maybe they will surprise us. Hand me that 3 inch bolt would ya.

Wandering out in the desert...

Hello all, it will be my first burn this 2008.

I have it in my mind for one evening, to take plenty of water, and just walk out into the middle of the desert in solitude under the naked sky.

My questions for those with experience is--how far out can I really go? Will there be opportunity for me to walk away from BRC enough to be in solitude and quiet for an evening?

obvious virgin here... initially we were invited to camp with a group of massage therapists...super mellow ..they had electricity..yadda yadda... super mellow.. sounded perfect.... now our entourage has grown substantially and want to be somewhere that we can be together...

simply put how do we find out groups that would openly have a group of hooligans from the wild mountains of Canada ? and generally how do we approach them and find out who they are ?

is there a listing of camp groups somewhere?

Hotel ettiquette

Hey guys, been active with the midwest regional for four years now, but going to the playa for the first time this year. I have a quick question regarding hotel ettiquette.

When we arrive in Reno on monday afternoon (Question #1 I heard its easy to get a room in reno on monday, impossibly hard without reservations on Sunday, is this right?) Is it wise to have the cleanest, most awake person to check us in? Will the hotel management refuse service to someone covered in playa dust because they are either prejudiced towards our type, or fear that we will make a mess in the rooms? (Question #2, How clean should the person at the room check in be?) And lastly, when we have five playanauts sharing a hotel room, how do we make sure that those waiting for the shower do not ruin the room while they are waiting to get clean? Do group have success askign them to wait outside until the shower is open? Do they drop a cloth on the hotel ground and have them wait there? Do they not care and get the bedsheets all dusty and playafied, ensuring a less than pleasant first night out of the desert, oh i love you bed and quietness and airconditioning sleep? (Question #3, How do you keep the room from becoming a micro-playa prior to everyone showering and changing)

Thanks guys!

Civilian Etiquette

There are many small towns on the way to Burning Man. They are mostly inhabited by farmers and such who are well aware of that yearly hippie festival in the desert, but are far from embracing its lifestyle.

Veterans can relate very different types of experiences with these people, good and bad (I've always had good, myself). But no matter what a wonderful, life-altering experience you've had on the playa that suffuses you with love for the world and your hot pants and fairy wings, PLEASE choose modest clothing for your re-insertion into civilization.

The inhabitants of these small rural towns can make your stay there pleasant or unpleasant, but regardless of that, try to bear in mind that this is THEIR HOME. They may not appreciate your traipsing around in a bikini. I have seen many a small town waitress or grocery clerk visibly wince at the degree of undress shown by a burner in their establishment. Please respect their standards, and we will all be more welcomed by them in years to come.

3 Quick Reminders for getting to the PLaya intact and sane

I've posted this on my rideshare tribe, but it's valuable info for all you noobs out there. By now, you are all getting extremely excited (maybee a little nervous) as you plan and pack for the unknown. Hey, I've been there....It was the 2000 burn for me, and what I've learned along the way, I'm happy to pass along to you. Just don't tell the other DPW members;)

1) Tickets- There will be NO Tickets sold at the gate this year. Anyone who is telling you different is lying. The last availible place to buy tickets before hitting the playa is the Melting Pot in Reno. That is if they still have any by then. Plan ahead and get your ticket now. Most people will have tickets at will call. To pick up your ticket you will need a photo ID and the confirmation page. If you have your ticket before leaving home, I suggest pulling it out of your wallet/purse/bag/etc. and looking at it when you are pulling out of the driveway. I know people who have made it all the way to the gate and realized that their ticket is sitting on the counter back at home,BUMMER.

2) Early Entry- I'm sure by now that you have heard rumors about getting into burning man early. Early Entry is reserved for work/set up crews like DPW (thats me), medical staff, & large theme camps that have been accepted and notified. You can't just show up at the gate and expect them to let you in early, they won't. These rules have been set by the BLM. If you are on the early entry list, you need to bring your confirmation sheet with the bar code on it. If you are on a ride share with other burners, all passengers must have early arrival bar codes or the whole van will be turned arround.

3) Car Safety- This is really important, Most of the trip from Reno to Playa is not in cell phone range. Make sure that your vehicle is road worthy before leaving. Have an emergency roadside kit with flares, a good spare tire, a jack, & a flashlight all within easy reach. The road out there is a narrow two lane with no sholder, pulling off of the road is extremely dangerous if you have any sort of speed going. Make sure that you have current registration and insurance on the vehicle. Check headlights/tailights/turn indicators. Tie down your suff securely, and attach a red flag to anything that
