Hello, all! I'm Bo, from Sacramento, but originally from San Juan Island. I am searching for the lovely troupe that inspired me to begin bellydancing in the first place... I saw them in the late '90's at the Seattle Folklife Festival, where my marimba band played near them on the grass by the big fountain. I saw them several years in a row, probably '96-'98. I remember two women, one of whom had dreads and wore white. They had live musicians with them, too. Definitely tribal-style. I would love to know who these women were and to thank them for the inspiration they gave me!

Re: Troupe from '90's at Folklife?
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 5:36 PMSounds like it could have been Banat Sahar up here in Bellingham. They definitely inspired a lot of dancers, myself among them! Not sure if any of the members are on tribe, but here's the link to their myspace page: www.myspace.com/banatsahar -

Re: Troupe from '90's at Folklife?
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 2:09 PMIt could have been them. I'm not seeing any photos there that ring any bells - they look a little more folkloric than the women I saw. The dancers I saw did not wear hair coverings, and they had less of an ATS choli/big skirt/coins look. I'm sure it's still possible that it was Banat Sahar in other costumes. I'll look them up, thank you.
