Hello! I've been away from Seattle for about ten years and am definitely out of the loop. I'm looking for a local seamstress with extensive experience in making skirts, harem pants, etc. and covering bras and belts. Any recommendations?

Thank you!

What is ‘Fusion Belly Dance’?

Fusion can mean many things to many people. I like the vagueness of the word… It leaves a lot of room to experiment and find your own voice. To me, it is mixing different styles and genres of music and dance into the dancer’s own individual interpretation and expression of their art form. My own personal stylization, or Fusion, is a mix of Tribal Fusion, Hip Hop bits I love to use, and something I call ‘Gooey-gothic’, which is something I’ve sort of created over the last year of performing in an Industrial Art & Music show.

About the workshop:

We will be jumping down the rabbit hole of ‘Fusion Belly Dance’ each week, where I will share the foundations of my favorite moves, explore stylization and touch on subjects like; musicality in dance, and intent in performance. I hope to challenge and inspire you to think outside the belly dance box and discover your own groove, with exercises in breaking the rules, listening to your body, and increasing your intuition.

This is an intermediate to advanced class focusing on my own funky stylization. This is treated like an intensive and we will be moving fairly quickly. I won’t be teaching any ATS or Cabaret, so it is essential that the students already have a basic knowledge of belly dance mechanics as taught in some of the more traditional disciplines, so we can move beyond the basics and get to the juicy stuff. There are many wonderful teachers to learn from first to build a solid foundation. Essentially, I want you to know the rules before I tell you how to break them!

Medea will be offering a 4-week workshop series where she will take you down the rabbit hole that is Fusion Belly Dance. Each week, she will share the foundations of her favorite moves, explore stylization, and touch on subjects like; musicality in belly dance, and intent in performance. She will also challenge and inspire you to think outside the belly dance box, with exercises in breaking the rules, listening to your body, and increasing your intuition. All skill levels are welcome, but some belly dance experience is helpful since a few of the moves are more advanced.

Hey Everyone,

I'm super sad to be having to part with my glorious spot in the Unmata workshop, but, unfortunately, me and a van had an unfortunate encounter yesterday which left me with a concussion and a deep tissue bruise on my calf...No dancing for me for a week at least probably :'(

Anyways, I'd be happy to sell my spot for $60 ($5 off what I payed) so just pm me if you're interested.

Where? need brown skirt and green hip & top asap

I need a very full, solid color XL brown skirt (or near solid color; subtle pattern or strip, or metallic stripe okay), and a green top and hip accent that match each other. I'm hoping for a little bit of matching srap fabric for a hair kerchief, or to get some matching accessories like that.
I need them soon, so am looking to the Seattle area for resources/places/people who could supply this. I would make them myself, but I am in the process of moving, so all my tools and supplies are packed away.

Does anyone know a local source for these items? Many thanks!

Hey!

I am going to Seattle for 4 weeks (June 21-July 18) and I was wondering if there was any bellydance studio offering classes close to the University of Washington. I am not familiar with the area so the easiest it is to commute the best.

Feel free to drop me a message =)

Thanks!

At the time, February *really* was Mardi's only gig in the NW for 2009. This wasn't scheduled until afterwards from one of my crazy last-minute ideas. Hooray for a 2nd chance at Love! And she brought her friends!

Happy Spring!

TriBellas is joining Seattle's Best in Burlesque for an AMAZING show! March 24th-26th

Through The Looking Glass
The Triple Door
7PM and 10PM Nightly
March 24th-26th.

The Triple Door is located at 216 Union in downtown Seattle, across from Benaroya Hall. For tickets, call 206-838-4333 or buy online at www.thetripledoor.net. Presale tickets are $25, $28 day-of-show. All shows are 18+.

Lily Verlaine & Jasper McCann, producers of the wildly successful holiday burlesque extravaganza “Land Of The Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker”, have both gone mad… mad as March Hares, that is. This spring, they beacon you down the rabbit hole to discover their new Spectacle of Ecdysiastic Pageantry, “Through The Looking Glass: The Burlesque Alice In Wonderland”. Artistic Director Lily Verlaine & her collaborator Jasper McCann invite you to shrug off the squareness of reality and fall into their swingin’ re-imagination of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of nonsense and fantasy, and to come along with Alice as she discovers what wonders lie beyond the velvet rope at Wonderland's most exclusive nightclub, The Looking Glass.

Another exploration of numerous artistic influences, this all-new production mixes jazz with classical, Indian and exotic music to set the mood as dancers from around the region mix ballet, tap, contemporary, and jazz dance into a whirlwind of whimsy and bawdy beauty. The superstars of Seattle’s Burlesque A-List, including Lily Verlaine, Kitten La Rue, Miss Indigo Blue, Waxie Moon, Babette La Fave, TriBellas Belly Dancers, The Swedish Housewife, Lucky Penny, Ben DeLaCreme, Polly Wood and Jasper McCann take on the roles of Carroll’s famous characters. Joined by Miss Inga Ingénue and Lou Henry Hoover as Alice and the lovely dance trio Tribellas, the ensemble turns Wonderland’s topsy-turvy world into an ecdysiastic tour de force filled with glamour, comedy, dance, and song.

The White Rabbit hosts The Looking Glass’ entertainment extravaganza that includes The Caterpillar, Jabberwocky, and The Cheshire Cat, while The Red and White Queens, The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, and a host of others make up the club’s elite clientele. Alice finds herself more caught up in the club’s insanity after each introduction, but the question remains… how will she ever get home, or, with such ample entertainment, does she want to leave The Looking Glass at all?

It's a new year; it's time for new dance movements! Heather's fusion of belly dance and modern stylization has inspired dancers around the world to step outside the genre of Middle Eastern dance and look to other dance forms for fusion ideas. Since 1999, Heather has trained most of San Diego's tribal dancers, including Bellydance Superstars Mardi Love, Melodia Medley, and Sherri Wheatley.

"heather is a genius. she's changed the face of belly dance forever, puttin' all the funk and cooooooool innit. the girl is smoov, AH SAID SMOOOV." - rachel brice of the indigo and bellydance superstars

Sunday * 12:00-3:00

"heather stants - for simplicity and fluid lines that make me want to clean my room, my heart, my closet and my life - letting go of everything that is unnecessary except for essential movement." - palika of heavy hips in santa cruz

About Heather Stants and Urban Tribal:
Heather Stants, as a choreographer, respectfully borrows traditional influences and combines them in her own personal expression of living in modern world around her creating innovative pieces that both reflect and inspire current culture. Through their popularization of an "urban" influenced dance style, a pared down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, the use of electronic music and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation, Urban Tribal has changed the face of contemporary belly dance. More information at http://www.urbantribaldance.com/bio.html

I can't believe Urban Tribal will be celebrating their 10 yr anninversary in 2009 yet have never been to Seattle before! Well, maybe the price of plane tickets from San Diego have something to do with that.... Don't miss this opportunity to study with one of the pioneers of modern tribal fusion in your own backyard!
10:30 AM-12:00 PM: Are you ready to sweat and get ready for year? Then bring lots of water and towels and join Amy for her TURBOTRIBAL TRICKS. In this workshop you'll get the skinny on what happens when you let off a lot of steam while dancing really well, really fast. You'll learn and drill two original combos snatched directly from the Hot Pot Studio tribal vocabulary, both equipped for improv and ready for show. You will have fun. You will sweat. You will be inspired. And after class when you're sore and on the floor, remember, "Horsepower" is defined as work done over time. We just teach you the tricks.

12:00-1:00 PM: Lunch on your own (better make it light)

1:00-2:30 PM: Amy is ready to work off the lunch and get you in shape with ROCKING THE TRIBAL BOAT. Jump in feet first into the UNMATA Sea of Belly dance Fusion! You will get wet - but let's see how many moves you can fit into your tribal boat. This workshop features some rowdy Sigil Signatures strung together with "make-sense" transitions. Take it all apart for choppy waters or string it together for smooth sailing.
ROSE HARDEN in Seattle November 15, 2008!

"A Rose by any other name than Harden would not be as sweet. I don't know many other dancers I can describe as solid and tough while soft and feminine at the same time. Rose just has that rock-solid old-school foundation of craft while still being able to emote ever changing and emerging styles. I wish I knew her secret - she is a true pioneer." -- Surreyya, The Gilded Serpent

Now is YOUR chance to learn her secret! Rose returns to teach in Seattle for one day only!

A longstanding member of Ultra Gypsy from 1999-2008, Rose has been honored to spend the last 3 years serving as assistant director to Jill Parker, the founder of the Tribal Fusion movement. During those years as co-director, Rose was a creative force in the company's dynamic choreography and innovative costuming. After more than 7 fullfilling years with Ultra Gypsy, she has now moved on to pursue other projects. Rose is also a founding member of Barbary Coast Shakedown, performs with The Lifesize Mousetrap and The Cyclecide Bike Rodeo, and created the popular Rosehips skirts. For more information please visit her website http://www.rosehipsdancer.com

This exciting tribal fusion workshop will include just a taste of Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. This class will accomodate all levels of experience.

Workshop 2 * 2:00-4:00
ICING THE CAKE: Contemporary Tribal Fusion
We'll kick things up a bit here! Level changes, fancy footwork, and spins are the name of the game. We'll work on more advanced layers and a short choreography highlighting Rose's contribution to contemporary tribal fusion belly dance. Because we will be building on our foundation from the first class, it is recommended that you take both classes. Previous belly dance experience requested if taken without workshop 1.

Hi,
I just moved here recently from Montana and have been bellydancing for four years. I am anxious to start back into bellydance but there are so many choices here! I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good tribal or tribal fusion instructors here in Seattle.
Thanks so much.

H.O.T Cd release party! Saturday Oct 18th

Hey Everybody,
It is getting close, real close to our fabulous show.

From Country to Cairo: A music program for the evening that will include raw folk music from the peasant country to sophisticated classics for the theater with a cabaret touch.

As you may imagine we are super excited to have such a stellar dancer line-up.

Think you've seen Ruby at her best? Wait till you experience her perform to the thick lush sound of H.O.T She owns the stage, a true powerhouse of dance.

And Suzanna, producer and performer of several monthly events. She is a rising star and the picture classic raqs sharqi with the skills to back it up.

Then there is Delilah, pretty much enough said right there. She will captivate you with her deep connection to and command of the music like no one else can.

And Then....You! We have a marathon open dance session for everybody to shake off the winter to the sounds of H.O.T. I guarantee you'll drop before we stop!

And Then just when you think you had enough we have the after party featuring Eastern Dub sounds of DJ Muad Deep. More open floor for the rest of the night.

Have you seen Columbia City Theater? This place is AWESOME!!!! old vaudeville charm, exposed brick walls, red velvet through out. Professional lights and sound, great stage, intimate cabaret seating, and every seat in the house is good.
Honestly this is one of the best place to see a show.

Oh yeah then there is our Brand New Cd "Beledi" will be available for the 1st time. I have to say it is the Bomb. We spent 10 months on this project and spent a whopping 10 grand to make it, but when you hear the think layers upon layers on sound you will no where every dollar went!

here is a comment from a person some of you may be familiar with ;-p

To "House of Tarab", I love your playing and Erik... Where did you get this amazing Tabla you have in your videos from??? (hahahahahahaha).
With Lots of Rhythm, Hossam
(yep thats right Hossam Ramzy!)

Well Hossam does knows best so....Come Party with H.O.T, The ladies and Dj Maud Deep!
Doors at 7:30pm
Show at 8pm till you all leave or 2am which ever comes first :-p

We are "offically" 18 and up but have adopted a don't ask don't tell policy for a few of our younger fans. So when you get to our lovely ticket and I d people you are either over or under 21. okay? Good

Full bar for those 21 and up.
There is no food service in the theater but a lot of choices very close and you can bring food in with you.

Limited tickets available at:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/35420

Tickets are only $15 in advance
You get 3 great dancers, a Dj, 6 piece band and one of the best shows of the year. You do the math, it's a great deal to say the least.

You can hear a few pieces off the new cd:

or some 2 minute samples at:

YAY! I'm on my way to Seattle for a weekend of dancing fun. First I'll be teaching a master class Thursday, October 2nd 6:30-8:30pm at the Arts Brewery in Seattle. For more details and to register:
fossefusionwithaubre.eventbrite.com/

This workshop will be a lot of fun as we will be working on combining the long lyrical line of jazz, the sexy sultry style of Bob Fosse, and the subtle of bellydance. No jazz experience necessary, but an intermediate/advanced knowledge of bellydance is strongly suggested.

And then I will be performing two pieces in " The Voyage of Ra" show Saturday evening, October 4th. Show starts at 8pm and will be at the Seattle Art Museum. For tickets and more info:
www.brownpapertickets.com/event/41008

Excited to be back in the beautiful northwest for the weekend! Hope to see you there!!!

Gypsy Caravan Collective Soul in Seattle

The Red Tent is pleased and honored to bring you Gypsy Caravan Collective Soul in Seattle taught by the fabulous Paulette Rees-Denis
October 10-11-12 2008 Skin Deep Studios Seattle WA.
This intensive program combines dance workouts and yoga stretches with aerobic toning and strengthening drills, several hours of tribal Bellydance, and participation in assorted levels of evening dance classes.
What we will cover?
Coming together to study the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Technique, we will:
• Improve your technique with Level One and Two moves
• Learn new steps and refine the moves you already know
• Build your confidence as a dancer, leading and following
• Strengthen your improvisational skills
• Learn rhythm identification and different zill patterns, and dance with them!
• Participate in discussions about tribal Bellydance history, artistry, and integrity.
• Have a great time dancing together as a circle of women, feeling the community spirit of this dance!
• You will be tested at the end of the session, and if you pass, you will be certified in Gypsy Caravan's Level One Collective Soul Tribal Bellydance Movement and Certification program! In the event you do not pass at this time, you can be re-tested at a later date. No worries, it is an intensive program and some of us need longer for additional study.

•This is a pre-requisite for the Gypsy Caravan Teacher Training program and will allow you to move into Collective Soul Level Two.
The Gypsy Caravan Tribal Bellydance Collective Soul Certification Program, with the various levels of study, means that when you are awarded your certificate, you know and have begun to master the levels and layers in the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Style Bellydance movement course! We want to help you be the best dancer you can be, and Gypsy Caravan style format assists with learning the basic dance language, how to best use your body, and how to be an ethical and creative artist. It has also been a proven method in bringing the tribes together from around the world, our Collective Soul.
This program has been in demand for years. We are very excited about offering it, so dancers can have a chance to learn by an intensive method, in a wonderful and fun environment, and with personal attention.
This is a way to have formal recognition for your hard work and dedication in learning this unique and versatile style of dance. This will give you the tools you need to better your dance, with knowledge and body skills.
All levels of dancers welcome—except brand new tribal dancers—some experience requested please.
Write dance@gypsycaravan.us to request application and make your deposit.
Space is limited, so don't wait!
Dance fees for the program $550.00
Deposit of non-refundable $100.00 payable to Caravan Studio, with application is due September 20 2008.
Balance due October 5 2008.
We will send you the schedule and what to bring upon registration or request. This fee does not include travel, meals, or accommodations. Check back for hotel recommendation and help finding a roommate.

20 September....who wants to perform?

Hey all. I booked the local Farmers Market on the 20th and thought it would be a great idea to have a bunch of people performing there. Obviously, this wouldn't be an uber professional show or anything, just a bunch of us getting together to perform and do our thang.

The location is Ellensburg, Wa, which is about 2 hours east of Seattle. I would be more than happy to provide better directions and help with local hotels if you want to stay here. We have some nice and some "nice"...and some...eh...hotels. The market is up and running from 9a to 1p. I was thinking, depending upon how many people want to come, the show could run from 10ish to 1ish. If we get a lot of people, then we could start earlier, but I didn't want to start too early. I also thought having a nice open dance time would be fun too.

Here's the basic breakdown:

20 September 2008: 10a - 1p

Troupes: no more than 15 minutes please
Solos: no more than 8 minutes please

(performance times are not strict, but a hopeful guideline)

I could talk to the library (which has a lovely and relatively large bathroom and see if they would allow some changing in there. They even have a spare room. We'll see what happens. This is all sort of spur of the moment thinking.

If you are interested, please send me an email as soon as possible, letting me know. Also please include your "style". I use quotes because I think defining yourself by one style isn't accurate, but it would help me put together a schedule. I would like to be able to mix it up a bit in the performances If you have a preference in time, please include that, but again, I'm hoping to mix up the styles. I will have a better idea as it gets closer to that time.

This shout out/request goes out to all styles. Cab, Tribal, Tribaret, Fusion, etc. You got it, flaunt it baby! I only ask that you be respectful of the environment and not include swear words in your music (you never know). Might seem obvious, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to throw that out there.

I am hoping to have everyone who is interested to have contacted me by the first of September (1 September 08). I will try to have a schedule figured out within the first few weeks and posted on my tribe page.

If anyone is interested, we could do a mini potluck too...because food is good. Yum.

If any of you are interested in vending, I can put you in contact with the farmers market people and you can talk to them. I have no idea what they do...they just do it.

http://www.last.fm/group/Seattle+Cats+Love+Belly+Dance

I am a belly dance newbie--I barely have my learner's permit.

On a whim I decided to create this space last night for local belly dancers and those interested in the Seattle belly dance scene to use. I am not really an active moderator type, either--I just wanted to create the space :-S , in this case, a space on huge music listening website with tons of world music available for it's users.

I would welcome any imput on where else to mention this or how to promote it for people to use...or how to make it more useful.

If any of you are last.fm listeners feel free to join and make something of it. (Note last.fm is currently buggy as they have launched a new Beta version of their site).

Troupe from '90's at Folklife?

Hello, all! I'm Bo, from Sacramento, but originally from San Juan Island. I am searching for the lovely troupe that inspired me to begin bellydancing in the first place... I saw them in the late '90's at the Seattle Folklife Festival, where my marimba band played near them on the grass by the big fountain. I saw them several years in a row, probably '96-'98. I remember two women, one of whom had dreads and wore white. They had live musicians with them, too. Definitely tribal-style. I would love to know who these women were and to thank them for the inspiration they gave me!

Whidbey Workshop series -- a few spaces available!

I'd like to invite everyone to a workshop I'll be teaching on Whidbey Island on Sunday, August 3rd! This is a workshop for experienced beginners and beyond. The class is the second in a series, but the previous class is not a pre-requisite.

The working concept will be "shades and tones in Mideastern dance": we'll be experimenting with ways to create a dance that is as complex and interesting as the music you're dancing to. To that end, we'll be taking a bare-bones choreography to a section of Najwa Karam's "Wrood Eddar" and adding layers of interest and expression to build a nuanced performance.

The class will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with several breaks included. Early registration fee (before July 23rd) is $40; after that date, the class fee is $50. We'll be working at Island Dance in Clinton -- just a quick hop from the ferry! Please bring finger cymbals, water, and a sack lunch.

If you have any questions about the class, my background as a teacher and performer, or would like to receive a workshop flyer and registration form, please feel free to contact me here, or contact the workshop organizer Shari James at kismet at whidbey dot com .

~*~*~*~*~
"Enter Mardi Love, the greatest aesthetic influence on my dancing and costuming today. She completely blew my mind, I was in awe of that girl." - Rachel Brice

Mardi Love is the main choreographer, costume designer, and co-director of The Indigo with Rachel Brice. We are *so* lucky to have the elusive Miz Love return for another weekend Indigo intensive!
~*~*~
Saturday * 12:00-4:00
SKILLET OF SNAKES: Day one delivers combinations for quicker tempos. Using combinations in improvisational dance is a good way to keep your head whilst striving for variety and contrast. Movements will be broken down and drilled. Combinations will be joined to form a short, original choreography. Some bellydance experience is highly recommended.

LOCATION:
Danceland USA (Northgate area)
Sunday * 10:30-2:30
THE SWEET & LOW DOWN: Another day, another dance, but today drops itself into a jar of molasses. Mardi presents combinations borne out of her slow-dancin bag of tricks. New movements are introduced, as well as new takes on some basic slower moves in the tribal repertoire. Combinations will be joined to form a short, original choreography. Some bellydance experience is required.

I just looked up a dancer on YouTube that my instructor highly regards and was shocked at many of the YouTube comments on this dancer (I enjoyed her video). I know one must be careful on making too much of the comments, but it would seem from them that the world of bellydance is anything but one happy family. I found it distressing and many of the comments very judgemental and bizarre. Maybe it's just jerks on the internet being jerks on YouTube but is this reflective in any way of anything outside of the internet?

Here is the thread in question:

Fremont Solstice Parade

Greetings All,

Fremont Solstice Parade is right around the corner and this year I am going to be leading a tribal section of belly dancers within Delilah’s famous Parade March. It is going to be lots of fun and many of us, myself included, will be challenged to coming up with cool tribal gear in fuchsia and bold pink colors! I will be looking to Kajira of Black Sheep Bellydance for inspiration on this one.

The theme this year is “Women for Peace” exploring the power that we have as diplomats and pioneers of freedom within our society and those abroad. Thursday May 1 there will be an initial meeting to chat about the theme, costuming and any other questions people may have about the parade. Please feel free to drop by and say hello. You will get a sneak peek at my first pink costume ever! If you can’t make the meeting, that’s fine also. My classes will start Tuesday May 6 at 7pm
Classes and the Meeting will take place at:
7:00pm
VDP Studio
4128 Fremont Ave N Seattle, Wa 98103
(206) 632-2353

Also, if you want to support the parade but aren’t interested in dancing we need drummers too! Eric teaches the parade rhythms for free! It’s a lot of fun and a great opportunity to work on your drumming with a very experienced musician.

Here is a link to the main parade website:

Wow! What a great weekend at the Seattle Center. My student and cohort in percussive crime spent the entire weekend focused on classes with Raquy, George Sadak and other great drummers. Raquy even asked us to play with her during the finale celebration. Any of you who haven't had the chance to go to the Rhythm fest I can't recommend it enough. Everything is free and there are endless classes and performances.

In case any of you hadn't heard Raquy is doing an advanced intensive tonight at Jam Town tonight. I can't recommend her enough. Here is the info in case any of you are interested or have partners who might be.
BIOGRAPHY:
Tamra-henna is a performer, choreographer and instructor of Middle Eastern dance whose emotional range and technique have been shaped by seven years of performance, study, and life experience in the Middle East. With the intention of learning the art of raqs sharqi (belly dance) from its source, Tamra-henna moved to Egypt to study musical interpretation, technique, and the Arabic language and culture. She trained extensively with Nadia Hamdi, Raqia Hassan, Mona El Said, and Ibrahim Akef while pursuing a performing career in Cairo.

She has appeared in Egypt’s most prestigious venues including: the Cairo Meridien, Cairo Sheraton, Cairo Marriott, the Mena House Oberoi, and most notably the Nile Hilton, where she was offered an extended contract. While in Egypt, she opened for some of the most well known artists in the Middle East today such as Amar Diab and
Dina. Hungry for diverse cultural experience, Tamra-henna accepted contracts throughout the Arab world and has performed, traveled, and lived in: Lebanon, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Yemen, and Cyprus.

Since her return to her native California in 2000, Tamra- henna has earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance Choreography (within the genre of raqs sharqi,) at the University of California, Los Angeles. There, at the Department of World Arts and Cultures, she has taught accredited classes in raqs sharqi technique and culture. In
2005 Tamra-henna performed internationally as a featured soloist and workshop instructor with the “Bellydance Superstars.”

Tamra-henna is constantly seeking to broaden her kinesthetic knowledge, hone her teaching skills and expand her artistic expression. Towards this end, she is currently working towards certification in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies, a system for understanding, mastering, and communicating a vast range of expression through movement. Tamra-henna teaches and performs regularly in the LA area, and conducts
workshops and performances internationally.

Hello all!

I will be relocating to Seattle from Orlando this summer to attend UW. I dance mostly tribal fusion but I do ATS as well. Can anyone direct me toward some good tribal teachers in the area? Near the U-District is preferable but anywhere in the city is okay. I'm incredibly excited about moving to Seattle and I can't wait to get involved in the dance community there!

Best,
Sarah Kate
