decisions! thailand/laos or bali/lombok or thailand/borneo

hello. i am having trouble deciding where to go come mid february for a month. i really should buy a plane ticket right now. i have never travelled alone before or in south east asia. but i am looking for a not too travelling all the time kind of trip with lots of trains and planes all the time. but stay in a few places for longer. see stunningly beautiful nature. maybe a meditation retreat. escape big alcohol party scene with ease. thailand seems exciting with all its variety and i would like to do a meditation retreat. but bali seems so beautiful and the culture quite thrilling. any thoughts?

things i am not sure about...

is it a tricky/expensive business to get from thailand to borneo...i suppose it would be a plane ticket...?

how wet is the wet season in bali...? seeing that kind of rain sounds kind of fabulous...but if it would make long day hikes less easy to plan....welll...that would be a damper...

are thailand and bali both similarly touristed....but with out of the way spots that you can find with a bit of effort?

any advice appreciated...!!

  • Having been to all places mentioned, I would say Bali then Lombok then Gili Meno a small island off Lombok. Also, I took the ferry to and fromBali, Lombok but if you can afford it take the flight. I think it leaves from Denpasar. If you decide to go there and have questions private message me I was there for several months.

  • Just one quick correction. Borneo is not really anywhere near Bali.

But outside of Kuta Beach, Bali and Indonesia is much less touristed than Thailand.

I'd second Reverend's suggestion. Fly into Bali and then explore Indonesia from there. You should definitely check out the Gilli Islands. From Lombok, you can actually take a boat trip out as far as Komodo Island and see the Komodo dragons. Then if you have time, you can also head the other direction into Java, and check out the fantastic Bromo volcano.
