The pix in the album got me thinking about something I've been wondering about for a while. When I was new, I remember learning something to the effect that one shouldn't strike areas that are bruised, but look for fresh territory. I always thought of this in terms of subsequent play sessions and bruises that are already starting to age, but I'm wondering how this idea plays out with fresh ones, in the same play session. If the sub's bottom is starting to turn purple already, but you're still playing, obviously there is already vessel damage, but the blood may not yet have had time to coagulate, so I don't know if there is still the same potential risk of clotting.
So, my question is, is it OK to keep hitting fresh bruises, which it looks like the top has done in many pictures one sees online, including these, or not? Are the risks the same? Does anyone know anything further about this - ideally some solid medical information?

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 11:22 AMI routinely create bruising by hitting the same spot numerous times, (1000's, 10k's, prolly), sometimes over the course of hours.
I don't think anyone really knows the risk of clotting. I suspect that the admonitions you're heard to avoid existing bruises have more to do with the ease with which one can control sensation.

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 1:20 PMI just learned this: when you see a hematoma developing during caning, you can burst it if you hit the same spot again. This might be a bonus for some. Just make sure to be responsible about what happens to the splashing blood, 'kay?

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 11:40 PMI frequently use the cane on the exact spot as a previous strike. It is impossible not to do so if you are into a scene that is going to last more than, say, 10 minutes. The submissive is often disappointed if there are not bruises left from the encounter with the cane. I always want to know if the person I am going to cane is on a medication such as prednisone, a drug that will cause bruising. There is nothing one can really do about it, but one should know that the submissive will easily bruise and use the cane perhaps a bit slower and make an effort to strike different surfaces. Even in such a situation as this one is still going to have one strike on top of a previous one. There is only so much "fresh territory," as kig mentioned.
If one comes to me for the cane, one is not coming for a facial and make-up where one would think the Lord Himself applied the rouge. There will be no doubt that I myself applied the cane. -

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Sun, March 26, 2006 - 10:05 AMUse varnished canes so they don't absorb body fluids, strike in straight lines, and try not to overlap areas or go over unhealed areas too hard. Move from the butt to the back of the thighs if necessary. Change up the thickness of the canes. Don't cross-cross your blows. Aspirin is another med that thins blood and causes bruising. Too much of a good thing in the same spots can eventually lead to a condition called "leatherbutt" (Google it) .

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Sun, March 26, 2006 - 1:02 PMVarnished canes will still absorb blood. This is because rattan is not totally smooth, even sanded, and the varnish usually does not coat things 100%.
Some of us like to cane in a style called the five barred gate: five strips laid on horizontally, and one catty cornered across the first five. YMMV.
I agree that if someone has large areas of bruising, you should not go over and over that area, but usually, it's okay to go over already hit territory a couple of times in the same caning session. Caning on older bruises is a bad idea, however. It's best to let these heal up before starting again.

Re: Question About Hitting Bruises
Mon, March 27, 2006 - 2:28 PMDear Ms. Wendy, Ladies and Gentlemen;
In my younger times in the scene, (1970s-early 1980s) --marks were not desired. BDSM and or D/s wasn't accepted and sometimes progress is not a good thing.
The techniques I use get the same results without bruising but, I also admit that I have not seen anybody use my techniques and or style either.
I understand why some want 'pride' marks of the cane, whip or single tail however, there should be options to all out there as well as to aim for the effects without the damage if possible.
Repeated bruising in any area, for example the buttocks will indeed create a "leather butt."
People who play often and hard, increasingly need to increase the hard and intensity to get the marks. Eventually, no marks occur period, much to the dismay of those who crave them.
The recipe for my tastes, in regard to reducing bruises is; taking Heinz brand white vinegar, soak a cotton ball and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. Might have to use those cotton strips that hair salons use (when getting a perm) to lay across the length of a bruise from each cane stroke. This will reduce the "blue" of the bruising and speeds the healing process.
Listerine mouth wash, when applied to the broken blisters of skin (and works on toe fungus also), acts as a balm.
I personally, prefer to not leave bruises for a long period of time on anybody. I admit I am a sadist, so I want to play more often and feed on the results of caning and not leave evidence behind.

Maximizing bruises?
Wed, June 7, 2006 - 12:46 PMNo one has yet mentioned any techniques for *maximizing* bruises.
Any recommendations? Perhaps I am not playing hard enough, or perhaps I am simply too healthy, but I never seem to gain any marks that linger more then 24 hours... even when I take a hot shower immediately afterwards to "set" them.
Asprin has been mentioned as a bruise-increasing agent (because it thins the blood?), but taking a pain-killer seems counter-productive for a heavy SM scene.
Thoughts?
Cheerfully,
- D
All of the above. -

Re: Maximizing bruises?
Wed, June 7, 2006 - 1:40 PMHot baths or hot tubs work much better than hot showers at "setting" bruises.
Also taking aspirin for a few days before the scene.
