They are safe to use. If they don't want to be used, they will break right away. A good thing to do is to wet them down. Soak them in the bath tub overnight. You are going to have to straighten them out as they dry because they will warp somewhat as they dry.

Rattan will break when it's done, but it typically breaks across, unlike bamboo which breaks lengthwise.
