I had the great privilege to be caned by someone I really enjoy playing with last night. He caned the front of my thighs with a fairly thick black plastic cane. Delrin, I think? It was *so* wonderful and intense.

What was your introduction to caning? Mine was unintentional, actually. In college, my photography teacher had a flexible pointer (a cane for all intents and purposes) with which he would point at slides and lecture. He was late for class one day and I picked it up, began to whip it up and down, and accidentally got myself across the left thigh. Ooooh...three seconds later....WOW! Thanks, Professor Greule!

So last night i received a birthday caning. My birthday isn't until next week, but the caning came early. Without trying to explain to you the significance of the number, know it was decided that i would be taking 88 strokes.
(and no, i won't be turning 87 next week...*wink*)

So 88 strokes... 88 deliciously wicked thwacks with the long, heavy rattan cane. All told i'd say they were delivered in approximately 20 minutes.

There were three things i found to be noteworthy about the caning...

1. His pacing. He chose to hit me in groups of eleven. ~(oh, for those that don't know, i count and thank Him for each stroke)~ First, i love grouping. Not only does it help me count, it helps me stay focused and it gives me little auxiliary goals to concentrate on... which in turn help me get to the big main goal. Second, eleven seemed the perfect number for each set. He's used many different amounts for sets before... this was the first time He's chosen eleven... and for some reason, it felt just right to me... not too many, nor too few.

Pacing is a big factor for me. The quicker the succession of strokes, the more challenging it is to keep my breathing steady and my counting audible and my position maintained. Too much time between strokes, and i start to lose focus... my mind usually wandering to what i anticipate will happen once the caning is finished and i get to show Him my gratitude. Therefore, pacing plays an important role in our caning sessions.

2. His hands. He touched me a lot throughout the 88. Mostly between sets of eleven, though not exclusively so. And i want to be clear about the quality of His touch. It wasn't that He was caressing the inflamed flesh (although it certainly translated as such)... no, what i mean is that the intention i felt behind His touch was more of an exploratory nature.

He was feeling for Himself, not in order to comfort me.

Which in turn, comforted me.

This is an important distinction for me because i don't like a lot of 'lovey dovey touchy feely' mixed with my pain. However, i thoroughly enjoyed a lot of "oh, look at that mark!... or... feel the heat from that stroke radiate!" - which is what His hands on me felt like. i don't know that those were His thoughts, it's just how i received it. And for me, because of my nature, i am more comforted by His caressing me for His pleasure than i am by His caressing me for mine. (if that makes sense)

3. And last but not least... there was something that i didn't like so much about last night's beating. Quite often He would deliver a strike only to leave the cane resting upon the very spot He had just impacted. i found this to increase the difficulty of absorbing the stroke. It made the cut linger longer than it would otherwise, and it almost seemed to block the spot from my breath. Not sure how to word this in a way that it will be clearly understood... let me see here...

So i'm not much of a toucher, i don't reach my hands back to touch the pain and rub the wound. Instead i meet the pain with my breath. i like to stretch a bit, breathe into the agony, bounce my knees, and let the sensation wash over me. What i found last night was by having the cane resting on top of the location of immediate impact, i was challenged to breathe into the stroke. In fact, at a few points i had to fight the urge to buck the cane off my bum. (something that would have undoubtedly cost me more strokes... more, nastier, fiercer strokes) What it made me realize is that the couple seconds between strokes in which i am counting and thanking Him, that's when i embrace the searing pain and having the cane resting on the traumatized flesh seems to mask that quality of time.

It's an interesting idea, one that i have perhaps not yet constructed well enough to express quite what i mean. i'll get back to you all on this... as my processing continues. :)

Oh... and i know i said there were 3 but i thought of one more...

4. His commands. Now, obviously as His sub, i live for His commands... however what i am referring to here are commands given in the form of a statement as opposed to an order. Instead of Him telling me to keep my toes on the ground... He told me that my toes would remain on the ground. In a way it makes it easier to follow whatever the order may be. If He states it as a fact, then it becomes truth. Whereas if He poses it as an order, it implies that the choice is mine whether to comply or not. Now of course His commanding me in this way doesn't at all diminish, nor eliminate, my choice of compliance. All it does (for me at least) is make it that much easier for me to obey.

Ok, sorry about the wordiness and exaggerated length of this post. i just wanted to share my experience, and give a voice to those things that i found to be (as i said before) noteworthy components to my most recent caning. i appreciate you reading this and i welcome any and all feedback, opinions, thoughts, reactions, questions, personal accounts, and/or responses.
Who knows, this might even spur a discussion. :)

A bit off-topic, but: New whip class in town! Starts in SF on March 6th...

Years past, there was a very well-known whips class that went on weekly at the Circus Center in San Francisco. For various reasons, the class eventually ended.

I'm quite pleased to be able to announce that a new version of the whips class is starting up again this coming March 6th. I'll be running it as a peer workshop rather than a class, although I'll be asking various people with good whips skills to come by from time to time. It will be held on the first and the third Thursdays of each month, in the same location as the old one, at 755 Frederick in SF (at Golden Gate Park, and by the Haight-Ashbury district.)

This will be a general-purpose whips workshop, not something solely intended at dungeon play techniques. Dungeon whips are welcome, as are long bullwhips. One of the charms of using this space is that it's in a gym environment, which means even a 14 foot bullwhip won't get tangled in the ceiling. However, since the space is vanilla, we won't be emphasizing any particular end-use for the skills we're practicing...

When i want new canes I go to the caning shop in Berkeley and buy stripped and raw cane by the foot, http://www.caningshop.com/. Just don't let them bend it too much to get it out the door.

Cut the desired length. Whittle the any sharp bits and round the ends, add a touch of sand paper and a good sealant.

If that's too much work buy some from the local makers or shops.

Question About Hitting Bruises

The pix in the album got me thinking about something I've been wondering about for a while. When I was new, I remember learning something to the effect that one shouldn't strike areas that are bruised, but look for fresh territory. I always thought of this in terms of subsequent play sessions and bruises that are already starting to age, but I'm wondering how this idea plays out with fresh ones, in the same play session. If the sub's bottom is starting to turn purple already, but you're still playing, obviously there is already vessel damage, but the blood may not yet have had time to coagulate, so I don't know if there is still the same potential risk of clotting.

So, my question is, is it OK to keep hitting fresh bruises, which it looks like the top has done in many pictures one sees online, including these, or not? Are the risks the same? Does anyone know anything further about this - ideally some solid medical information?

I have an aluminum arrow shaft -- It's more of a stiff rod than whippy cane.. although it does have flex.

It has some great qualities.. 1. thicker diameter than cane so does not cut 2. light weight so does not bruise (welt yes)3. Excellent control and accuracy.

Permanent marks?

So, no...this mark was not from a cane, but a cane could leave a similar type mark.

I was hit with a dressage whip. It is fiberglass, like a thin cane, smaller than a #2 pencil. Attached on the end is about 4 inches of nylon cording that frays a bit at the end.

I have had a mark on my ass cheek from a stroke with this whip for WELL over 8 months and am curious if anyone has detailed info on how this mark has stayed so long.

It did not break the skin when applied. It of course turned into a welt, but the mark left behind is extremely detailed.

You can see where the fiberglass part hit, then a thicker little section where the cord attached over the fiberglass, then thinning back down to the size of the nylon cord. You can even see the imprint of the frayed part of the cord.

It is a raised area that is light pinkish purple color. I am looking specifically for detailed info on how a stroke like this can stay for so long without breaking skin.

Cane breaking

Hello All!
A few weeks ago one of my friends bragged about breaking a cane over someone's butt.
I have never broken a cane in a scene and I have given some pretty darn hard canings. So what is it that causes canes to snap?
My thinking is that unless you bend the cane beyond its maximum flexibility failure should only happen after extended use.
Any thoughts - anecdotes, anyone want to brag about dramatic in-scene equipment failure?

Canes and Needles

Greetings all,

I am delurking for a moment to ask if anyone has ever used canes over needles.

My Sir has used something more dowel-like than cane-like on top of needles, but i am wondering if anyone has used/experienced anything more like a traditional crook handled cane. If so, any technical issues to look out for, such as the needles catching in the cane? If not, anyone wann go first?! =)

What is your furniture or apparatus of choice for being caned or giving a caning? Bent over back of chair? edge of table? lying on bed? Whipping bench? Horse? A-frame? H-frame? over a barrel? stocks? whipping post? Against wall, standing? Over a rail? Wrists tied and suspended from celing? What am I forgetting? What are some good household objects often overlooked? Most strokes taken/given?

I have given a couple of canings of 150+ strokes. To achieve this and not leave permanent marks required a long warm-up, and a good deal of spacing between strokes. Both sessions took over an hour.

Switches

I just cut 4 new applewood switches while pruning fruit trees in mendicino this week.

I can hardly wait to sand them down and get them nice and smooth for use.

I chose 4 varying degrees of thinkness and flexibility. I am looking forward to testing them out!

Leather Show Cane

During a trip to England a few weeks ago, I visited the equestrian department at Harrod's in search of the perfect matched pair of riding crops.

While I was there, I discovered the most interesting cane-- it's about the thickness of my little finger, and is covered in leather. The best picture I can find is about a thired of the way down this page:

I took this out on its maiden voyage recently, and it was wonderful! It feels and handles more like an acrylic cane than a rattan one, but it's a bit more flexible than acrylic.

I've spent a lot of time with Google, and the only sites that sell them are in the UK. I don't know enough about horse shoes to know for sure, but my guess is that they're used in British but not American shows.

Has anyone seen these? Know of a US source?

Cane as TeaseTool

So clearly the cane when administered to the behind is a topic already well covered by this tribe.

I have been enjoying using the cane as tool for teasing recently and was curious to hear other members thoughts on this topic.

I have used both the tip and the bole for caressing, sliding between lips (of both sorts), probing the anus, tapping all parts of the body.

Some of the things that I am liking about the cane for these purposes are:
-It can be deftly and swiftly moved to different parts of the body
-It has different surfaces to cause different sensations (ie the smooth length of the shaft versus the rounded tip)
-It's wickedness when applied with speed or strength causes there to be tension even when gently applied
-I like swords and to me a cane is decidedly swordlike in it's demeanor

I am interested to hear the thoughts of others on this topic from both the top and bottom perspectives.

Ow! My aching wrist!

So last weekend I did (topped) some play that involved lots of caning, as well as paddles, crops, and a few other goodies. I tend to do sensuous caning with lots and lots of repetitive lighter strokes that build up over time, rather than "six of the finest" style, though by the end of the scene I was working pretty hard.

When I was done, my wrist was killing me! Even now, several days later, it's still sore. I've done the ice/ibuprofen/splint thing, and it's getting better, but I'd rather avoid the problem altogether if I can.

I'm more or less ambidextrous with floggers and singletails, and while I could switch hands with the canes for a bit I didn't feel like I had sufficient control to really finesse the strokes. I suppose that practice would improve that, but I would probably just be transferring the problem from one hand to the other.

Anybody have tips for saving your wrist while caning?

What about Leather Butts?

A few years back when my partner and I started playing after a good caning I'd have stripes all up and down my butt and the following day I'd have two big eggplant bruises.

Four years later, even after not playing for a few months he can hardly get a mark on me. The canings are effective and painful; but no marks on the butt.

I'm guessing that repeated beatings have killed off the capillaries close to the surface of the skin, but I've not been able to find any legit info on the condition.

Does anyone have any info on this?
