NIN concert questions

topic posted Fri, May 2, 2008 - 8:24 AM by  Wonton
Hi! I just got my tix for my first NIN show at the Rupp Arena in Lexington (I'm absolutely thrilled). Anyway, I was curious about what to expect. I've been to tons of shows before but they have always been hippie-type stuff. Generally speaking, how is security at the shows. Do they allow camaras? What is the vibe like? Does anybody dance or jump around or does everybody stay kinda still? I know there must be some sort of difference in this and the scene I'm used to hanging around.

Hey Wonton- I've been to 6 NIN concerts. I've always danced and jumped around at each one :-) And, those around me do too.
Security is usually just like any other show, no cameras (but i've snuck cameras in before) They never really thoroughly search my purse, and i've always gotten away with hiding a camera at the bottom. The vibe is usually pretty good, i've never really even seen anything negative at a NIN show..

    Have Fun !

Thank you for the reply, Dana! I'm glad you said people dance cause I love to get my groove on, jump up and down, and make a fool of myself. LOL And, considering you've seen them 6 times, I can only assume Trent plays awesome shows.

i used to go see NIN way back in tha day ... i'm talkin' 1989 / 90 when trent/nin were nowhere near the big draw that they/he is now ...
i remember feeling not terribly impressed the first time i saw em even tho i loved PHM ...
eventually met he and the rest of the then band ...cool guys ...
i wouldnt mind seeing this new band version ... probably be good stuff going on improv and jam-wise ...
i know trent is into his jam rock ...

For real? Trent is into jam rock? That's cool. Wow, you're really lucky to have seen him way back then. I've loved his music since the early 90's but I never really had a good chance to see him until now.

Trent's show has evolved quite a bit since I first saw him swinging over the crowd in a small theatre on a meat hook with Pretty Hate Machine...but a jam band? Yeeeahhhh, I don't think so. Jam bands give me hives and I've never broken out in hives at a NIN show.

        No. Not really.

Trent isn't some industrialized form of the Grateful Dead or Phish.

On the other hand, NIN has been producing tracks without lyrics since Broken, and Ghosts is all instrumental, so maybe that's what he's on about.

If you want to see NIN, you should. If you don't like anything after PHM, you probably shouldn't. If you don't like the new album, you probably shouldn't. Because that's what concerts are: They play a lot of new stuff, and a lot of the old favorites. Of course, if they end up just doing Ghosts all night, I will be disappointed myself. I can't imagine Trent doing that though.

i never said the dead nor phish ... even tho I love both bands a lot and have seen them both many times ...
i was the freak wearing the skinny puppy t shirt at the gd and phish shows tripping my face off on mushrooms ...
but yes ... trent does his own kind of jamming ... pay attention when you go see them on this tour .... they'll do it .... and no I dont mean a ghosts kind of ambient jam thing either ....

            Re: GD/Phish

If you say "jam rock" that's the image that immediately springs to mind, whether or not you mention them specifically ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jam_band ). I saw NIN twice the last time they came through the US, and don't remember anything I'd really call a "jam," ie characterized by extended improvisational playing. Of course, since they didn't tour the US with Year Zero, that may have changed and I wouldn't be aware of it.

And to be honest, I don't think it's a coincidence that you were tripping on mushrooms at GD/Phish shows. Just going from anecdotal evidence, psychotropics are pretty much a requirement to "enjoy" the music.

jagged - no they arent a requisite in fact I see my tripping during that time as kind of foolish in that it's one of the least ideal set and settings for a trip .............. most people at those shows are more like, drunk and just high on weed .... and any music can sound better on any substance or sober really .... too many variables to sum it up as such .....

the only NIN concert I have ever been to as of yet was on the fragile tour and he played with A perfect circle. But it was an amazing concert all around. I expected a lot of bullsh#t because of what I'de seen on tv of his concerts( footage on Mtv and what not) but the crowd was amazingly sedate to what I expected and really, there wasnt a mosh going on which surprised me. But the fragile was a little more "grown up" and not as angry as his past work so I think that vibe tied in with the attending crowd. We danced but it never got violent like with Korn or Zombie concerts. The visuals were great. Very powerful imagry. The pre show music was great. They did not allow camera's and they told any one with a cell phone camera to leave it behind. I watched them confinscate a few too.
