Mon, November 22, 2004 - 9:27 AMOK Novel, great reading experience.
The story isn't strong, but the presentation of the whole book is so amazing it more than makes up for it. The footnotes that run on for pages, the pages left blank, the way the text wraps and warps at points all just adds to the disquiet.
It's probably my favourite book to read around Halloween

Re: house of leaves.
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:51 AMI thought it was an interesting experiment that didn't quite work. As a novel it didn't work, because the pacing is thrown off. As a literary experiment, it was more interesting, but I didn't have much of an emotional reaction to it. I read it at the same time as some other people and we all pretty much thought, "clever, but uninspiring."
Somehow he was able to make one book into two sales. There's a part of me that's greatly impressed by that. -

Re: house of leaves.
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 11:31 AMRead this in a college lit class--I also thought it clever and creepy. I am fascinated by form and function, and the interaction of the two. The book's structure was a comment on the story, and vice versa--and the whole thing is an internal journey. It didn't move me to tears or anything, but I thought it was deeply imagined, and piqued my attention greatly.
