CARDIFF, Wales -- Michelle Teran is the pied piper of wireless networks. Leading a band of followers through the city streets, the Canadian artist drags along a screen embedded in a suitcase that is showing supposedly secret images captured from cameras inside surrounding buildings.

Fri, November 4, 2005 - 11:56 AMThat's great- I'd like to do the opposite with sound in department stores and the like- maybe some mild music
and propaganda -

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 1:50 PMyeah well when a person advertises a point of view they're still an advertiser and a propoganda artist. It's what they're pitching and the integrity with which they pitch (say using humor or facts over exploiting emotions like fear) that counts, not that they pitch.
That's how I see it anyway. I know like George Carlin lambasts "marketers" which I think is kind of funny because his whole life is all about getting up on stage and pitching a point of view. Seems like what he actually takes exception to is that they pitch bullshit people don't need, but he lambasts the entire inclination without acknowledging he does the same thing.
I pretty much hate micheal moore for his exploitative tactics. I mostly agree with his positions, but I think his propoganda tactics are base and ultimately hurt us as a society while enriching him personally.
not to digress from the art of privacy invasion...

Re: The Art of Off Topic Drift Invasion
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 1:57 PMyou think his (mmoore) tactics hurt the greater good? i suppose karmically, maybe.
that's interesting because i was SO excited to see the 'left' finally use those tactics after we've been bulldozed by them for so long by the 'right', and then the 'right' gets freaked out by their own medicine...
fascinating time to be alive, if you can stand it.

good point- I suppose that makes everyone a propaganda artist -

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 2:23 PMyeah that's just it. I think we should educate ourselves and embrace it and do it right. Consciously. See the tactics for what they are. Understand our objectives and create inspiring visions. Visions and tactics with integrity.
I don't think it is a good idea to use the tactics of the right. He (moore) panders to a population that already feels the way he does. It's great for his career and salvo for those who have had too much Fox News crammed down their throats, but it's nazi tactics for nazi tactics and we can do better.
He (moore) doesn't appeal to people who haven't already formed an opinion in order to bring them into our "big tent." He insults and alienates many people who essentially share our same compelling fundamental concerns and makes them feel disenfranchised and angry and they get pissed off and go out and vote republican!
We're losing labor and minorities not because of policy, but because of attitutude. We exploit them as voting blocks without appealing to their individuality and crediting them for being able to process a complex thought.
That's my take on it, anyway... very frustrating to me... -

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 2:28 PMi think at the time he came out he was exactly what was needed...things were really suffocating with all that rush and o'reilly shit.
he won't carry the same weight (all pun intended) in five years from now.
i'll trust in the perfection of the universe i suppose.
it took katrina to give the entire media behemoth the OK to finally show bush in a bad light...more 'americans' were dead in iraq.
you just never know... -

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 2:35 PMI know what you mean but I'm not one who thinks the end justifies the means.
What's unfortunate is that there was nothing better at the time. I could attribute that dearth of talent and ability and inspired cultural leadership to sinister conspiracies, but that would be CRAZY!
ugh... thinking about this shit makes me so sick. and it's all I do. I feel sick alot. ;) -

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 3:56 AMI know what you mean, Trixie. I recently realized that I had to give up The Daily Show and other similar types of "entertainment" because they were allowing too much bullshit into my brain that I just couldn't process properly. I was really seriously depressed and a friend helped me realize part of the reason was because I had allowed too much information in without having any way to control it.
I realize we can't just dig holes and stick our heads in to keep out reality, but I find there's only so much of it I can manage while still retaining my sanity and peace of mind so I count on my friends and relatives to tell me what's not getting through anyhow.
In the meantime I try to focus on things that *are* within my control and effect change in little ways.

Re: The Art of Privacy Invasion
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 3:59 AMI love this project and wish I'd thought of something like it.
Modern society is so bombarded with images, information and just plain bullshit and most people seem to believe whatever they're told, or don't consider consequences and side-effects of things they're sold to supposedly protect them, such as home surveillance systems.
Michelle Teran is my new heroine!
