daly was anti for a looong time, but eventually wal-mart won. hopefully l.a.'s mayor will fight a bigger right.

who will stop wal-mart? who?!

The first woman to serve on the High Court wouldn't allow her actual words to be broadcast, and that's a shame, because -- based on Totenberg's report -- every American needs to hear what she said. The Reagan appointee who became a moderate and an American icon -- Bush v.

Eastern Standard Tribe by Cory Doctrow (Not actually about Tribe)

" Cory Doctorow’s Eastern Standard Tribe is a soothsaying jaunt into the not-so-distant future, where 24/7 communication and chatroom alliances have evolved into tribal networks that secretly work against each other in shadowy online realms. The novel opens with its protagonist, the peevish Art Berry, on the roof of an asylum. He wonders if it's better to be smart or happy. His crucible is a pencil up the nose for a possible "homebrew lobotomy." To explain Art's predicament, Doctorow flashes backward and slowly fills in the blanks. As a member of the Eastern Standard Tribe, Art is one of many in the now truly global village who have banded together out of like-minded affinity for a particular time zone and its circadian cycles. Art may have grown up in Toronto but his real homeland is an online grouping that prefers bagels and hot dogs to the fish and chips of their rivals who live on Greenwich Mean Time. As he rises through the ranks of the tribe, he is sent abroad to sabotage the traffic patterns and communication networks in the GMT tribe. Along the way, he comes across a humdinger of an idea that will solve a music piracy problem on the highways of his own beloved timezone, raise his status in the tribe and make him rich. If only he could have trusted his tightly wound girlfriend and fellow tribal saboteur, he probably wouldn't be on the booby hatch roof with that pencil up his nose."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080808/

oh. and if truth is stranger than fiction, this must all be true:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/030207.html

Dear Cecil:

Has anyone ever bothered to seriously check the claims of TV producer Chuck Barris in his book Confessions of a Dangerous Mind to see if he's a fraud or not? Also, could you personally investigate his claims? (I think he's a fraud, but I don't have the time to investigate myself.) --Russell, Sacramento, CA

Cecil replies:

Ah, right, Chuck Barris. Barris is the showbiz entrepreneur who created The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and The Gong Show (the last of which he hosted), hits in the late 1960s and '70s that were thought to represent the absolute low in schlock TV, at least until everybody got a load of Temptation Island. In 1982 he published an "unauthorized autobiography," Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which has recently been given a new lease on life as a movie. Central to the book is the claim that "Chuckie baby" (as Gong Show fans liked to call Barris), in addition to being a busy executive responsible at one point for 27 half hours of network TV a week, was a decorated CIA assassin. Barris writes that after chaperoning a winning couple from The Dating Game on their dream date in some foreign capital, he'd slip away, blow somebody's brains out, and then head back to Los Angeles to contend with those A-holes at the network.

And you want to know if maybe he's making some of this up. You want to know, to be precise, if I think Chuck Barris is a fraud for claiming, inter alia (I have always wanted to write inter alia), that his nom de guerre--the name he used to order airline tickets--was Sunny Sixkiller; that in 1953 he took his 75-year-old grandmother on a camping trip to the Poconos, where they spent a wonderful day, but unfortunately when he woke up the next morning she was dead, so he zipped her body into a sleeping bag, tied it to the roof of his Volkswagen, and drove to a police station, but even more unfortunately while he was inside making a report someone stole the car; that at 16 he persuaded a 13-year-old friend of his sister's to lick his "wee-wee" by telling her it tasted like a strawberry lollipop; that having been hired by the CIA after answering a want ad, he aced his training and was soon infiltrating a civil rights march in Selma, Alabama; that when ABC decided to air The Dating Game, the CIA said, hey, no reason you can't be a successful TV producer and a spy; that he kept dodging assignments until his CIA boss said, come with me to Mexico City, it'll be fun, and during the plane ride casually told Chuck they were going to kill a communist revolutionary, which they did; that after he got back he had three ex-cons destroy the Cadillac of a jerk who was in the habit of pretending to be a Dating Game talent scout and raping would-be contestants; that the CIA then assigned him to meet a courier in London, where he exchanged an envelope of money for a roll of microfilm, then jammed his silencer-equipped automatic into the courier's mouth and pulled the trigger three times, whereupon "the man's eyes remained surprised while the back of his head splattered against the wall of the church"; that he then "greased the bullet-shaped vial [of microfilm] with [Vaseline], dropped my pants, and slid the vial up my ass"; that he then sold ABC The Newlywed Game; that he spent $20,000 on abortions for various girlfriends; that he killed a bunch of other people (the details blur); but then a lot of his friends started getting killed because there was a mole in the CIA, but Barris got the last laugh by killing the mole, who turned out to be none other than . . . sorry, I don't want to ruin the suspense. Barris says he received an award from the CIA "for outstanding service," which provoked him to muse about "the strange dichotomy of being crucified by my peers for attempting to entertain people and lauded by my peers for killing them."

So, Russ, getting back to your question: Is Chuck Barris a fraud? Of course not, silly man. A fraud is somebody who expects people to believe his crazy bullshit. If doubts remain on this score, King Kaufman points out the following in an article posted to Salon.com (you'll find it in the archive): (a) in 1993 Barris published another memoir, The Game Show King: A Confession, in which he says nothing about the CIA or, for that matter, his previous book, and (b) over the years Barris has given varying accounts concerning his age, the manner in which he proposed to one of his wives, and so on. Of the CIA yarn, Barris coyly says in interviews, "I can't really confirm or deny it"--about as close as he'll come to admitting he cooked the whole thing up as a rebuttal to critics who thought his shows were atrocities. If you want to take the story seriously, Barris is happy to let you. But come on. He made a career out of outrageousness, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind proves he never lost his touch.

good god. have you arty-farty people seen this?!!

It's ~fantastic-! I think the creators Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding met in art school

I lifted this review from internet movie database as I couldn't agree more:

Most Original Comedy For Ages, 14 September 2005
Author: tom-1488 from United Kingdom
I've been raving about this comedy for a long time even though I missed some of it when it was on TV (usually late at night). So the arrival of the DVD was awaited with much anticipation. People often ask me to describe The Mighty Boosh - which is not an easy thing to do.

Essentially the structure is that of a sit-com, in that there is the reoccurring location of the zoo, and a set of familiar characters most notably the two main protagonists – zoo-keepers Vince Noir (Noel Fielding) and Howard Moon (Julian Barratt). Vince is the fashion conscious shallow one, that plays against Howard's jazz-loving, self-important but likable loser. Each episode is a juxtaposition of the Morecombe and Wise type banter between Vince and Howard, and the sheer surrealism of their subsequent adventures that take them to exotic locations and pit them against bizarre and often quite dark foes.

For me the triumph of the show is due to the breadth of vision that links the fantastic theatrical visual look (based on largely on Noel's sketches), with Julian's love of music, together with the off-beat acting style and witty script to provide an experience that is more than the sum of its parts.

There is nothing else quite like this on TV, you won't be splitting your sides every minute at quick-fire one-liners written by teams of caffeine stimulated comedy writers, but instead prepare yourself for a rather more gentle experience, peppered by some hilarious set-pieces, who's imaginative brilliance will ingrain itself into your heart and mind. It's quite simply lovable.
Vincent Gallo's Sperm

$1 Million

Price includes all costs related to one attempt at an in-vitro fertilization. (A $50,000 value) If the first attempt at in vitro fertilization is unsuccessful, purchaser of sperm must pay all medical costs related to additional attempts. Mr. Gallo will supply sperm for as many attempts as it takes to complete a successful fertilization and successful delivery. Sperm is 100% guaranteed to be donated by Mr. Gallo who is drug, alcohol and disease free. If the purchaser of the sperm chooses the option of natural insemination, there is an additional charge of $500,000. However, if after being presented detailed photographs of the purchaser, Mr. Gallo may be willing to waive the natural insemination fee and charge only for the sperm itself. Those of you who have found this merchandise page are very well aware of Mr. Gallo's multiple talents, but to add further insight into the value of Mr. Gallo's sperm, aside from being multi talented in all creative fields, he was also multi talented as an athlete, winning several awards for performing in the games of baseball, football and hockey and making it to the professional level of grand prix motorcycle racing. Mr. Gallo is 5'11" and has blue eyes. There are no known genetic deformities in his ancestry (no cripples) and no history of congenital diseases. If you have seen The Brown Bunny, you know the potential size of the genitals if it's a boy. (8 inches if he's like his father.) I don't know exactly how a well hung father can enhance the physical makeup of a female baby, but it can't hurt. Mr. Gallo also presently maintains a distinctively full head of hair and at the age of 43 has surprisingly few gray hairs. Though his features are sharp and extreme, they would probably blend well with a softer, more subtly featured female. Mr. Gallo maintains the right to refuse sale of his sperm to those of extremely dark complexions. Though a fan of Franco Harris, Derek Jeter, Lenny Kravitz and Lena Horne, Mr. Gallo does not want to be part of that type of integration. In fact, for the next 30 days, he is offering a $50,000 discount to any potential female purchaser who can prove she has naturally blonde hair and blue eyes. Anyone who can prove a direct family link to any of the German soldiers of the mid-century will also receive this discount. Under the laws of the Jewish faith, a Jewish mother would qualify a baby to be deemed a member of the Jewish religion. This would be added incentive for Mr. Gallo to sell his sperm to a Jew mother, his reasoning being with the slim chance that his child moved into the profession of motion picture acting or became a musical performer, this connection to the Jewish faith would guarantee his offspring a better chance at good reviews and maybe even a prize at the Sundance Film Festival or an Oscar. To be clear, the purchase of Mr. Gallo's sperm does not include the use of the name Gallo. The purchaser must find another surname for the child.

Check this out: some crazy folks are growing wedding rings from their own bones. The ultimate way to say "I love you!"?

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.08/start.html?pg=4

Why go to Tiffany's for a wedding band when you have one grown from your own bones? That's what five British couples did this spring, starting with a trip to the hospital for a quick jaw biopsy to retrieve bone cells. The idea - a romantic experiment dubbed biojewelry - is the love child of Tobie Kerridge and Nikki Stott, design researchers at the Royal College of Art, and Ian Thompson, a bioengineer at Kings College London. The trio used a four-step process (below) to coax the cells into skeletal symbols of everlasting devotion. It takes months. In September, the jewelry - plus still photos and a time-lapse video of the process - will go on display at Guy's Hospital in London. After that, the betrothed get the rings for keeps. "I love the idea that it's precious only to us because it is, literally, us," says Harriet Harris, one of the participants. "It's almost worthless to anyone else." You can't say that about platinum.

The process
1. Extract bone chips from jaw. Rinse.
2. Place bone cells in ring-shaped bioactive ceramic scaffold.
3. Feed liquid nutrients and culture in a temperature-controlled bioreactor for six weeks.
4. After coral-like bone forms fully around scaffold, pare down to final ring shape and insert silver liner (for engraving).
The asian art museum has that exhibit of tibetan art. Some Nob Hill something or other has that exhibition of corpses. oh... here it is... only 8 more days I don't think I can do that one alone, either (too creepy):
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A performance artist wearing safety harnesses jumped repeatedly from a museum roof to create photographs that recall scenes from the World Trade Center attack, but his spectacle was scorned by some onlookers and victims' relatives.

Collaborating photographers snapped away as Kerry Skarbakka fell more than 30 times from the five-story Museum of Contemporary Art on Tuesday. The photographs will be retouched to erase the pulleys and wires that kept Skarbakka from hitting the pavement.

"Imagining Ulysses"
Ireland 2004 / 90 min

"Imagining Ulysses" was produced last year by David
Blake Knox and Hilary Fennell to mark the centenary of
Bloomsday, the imaginary day on which all the action in
James Joyce's great novel takes place. It takes a fresh and
irreverent approach to Ulysses.

Like Joyce's novel, "Imagining Ulysses" comes in 18
different episodes and, like the original, each of these is
designed to have its own distinctive theme and style. Each
of the 18 films throws a different perspective on the man
and his work - watching them is a little like walking around
an art gallery and viewing a group exhibition on one topic -
Ulysses.

Narrated by Oscar Winner Brenda Fricker, with Patrick
Begin as the voice of Joyce, animations by Bafta winner
Time Fernee and an original score by Ray Jarman, the
overall intention of the film is to honour the spirit of the book
- in an imaginative, accessible and original way.

Contributors include the Oscar winning Film maker and
writer Neil Jordan, the Pulitzer winning author Frank
McCourt and the Booker Prize winning novelist Roddy
Doyle, as well as the doyenne of Irish women writers, Edna
O'Brien, the distinguished American critic Camille Paglia;
Meet the Bums! Filmmakers Tomas McCabe and Robert "Rabbit" Barringer
as well as others from Bums' Paradise will be present for Q&A.

Bums' Paradise is a 53-minute documentary that depicts the lives of
the men and women who lived in the ten-year-old Albany Landfill
community prior to their eviction. It follows them through the
eviction and documents them one month after the eviction. The film
emphasizes their concepts of community as well as the amazing art
that they created.

Instead of being a documentary about homelessness, Bums' Paradise
considers the question: What if the homeless -- the indigent, the
bums -- told their own stories?

When I first got to SF I found out Frontline was produced in part here because I met someone I was talking to about a job who was peripherally involved. I really hated their format at that time. They were promoting supposedly progressive ideas but using the medium in the most pedantic way possible. I HATED it!!!

But they've changed their format and have a special "Stories from a Small Planet" series of more in-depth news from around the world, and it's actually pretty good. Could get even better but they're using some better media techniques and better narration, at least. And they seem more even handed--they probably still have an "agenda," but at least they've gotten more sophisticated about it.

The episode I watched last night was about what it's like trying to be a journalist in Baghdad/Iraq, and the grueling ride to the airport along the most dangerous stretch of road in the country--less than two miles that they've been unable to secure in these "19 months" is what they said... the next segment was on the Sudan--summary was that genocide seems like too small a word to fix something that is so broken. Third segment was about a remote area in china where the "minority" population is islamic (a more secular version that is currently popular elsewhere) and how harsh the chinese government is on people they deem "dissenters" (anyone not chinese who articulates an idea pretty much).
Secret Service visits art show at Columbia

April 12, 2005

BY NATASHA KORECKI Federal Courts Reporter
Organizers of a politically charged art exhibit at Columbia College's Glass Curtain Gallery thought their show might draw controversy.

But they didn't expect two U.S. Secret Service agents would be among the show's first visitors.

The agents turned up Thursday evening, just before the public opening of "Axis of Evil, the Secret History of Sin," and took pictures of some of the art pieces -- including "Patriot Act," showing President Bush on a mock 37-cent stamp with a revolver pointed at his head.

The agents asked what the artists meant by their work and wanted museum director CarolAnn Brown to turn over the names and phone numbers of all the artists. They wanted to hear from the exhibit's curator, Michael Hernandez deLuna, within 24 hours, she said.

Curator in previous controversy

"They just want to make sure it isn't something more than a statement," Brown said.

This isn't the first time Hernandez has had a brush with the feds over a fake stamp. In 2001, authorities said they suspected he was behind a bogus stamp that bore a black skull and crossbones and the word "Anthrax." It was sent through the mail during the height of the anthrax scare.

The Columbia exhibit features 47 artists from 11 countries and depicts powerful religious and political leaders worldwide on mock postage stamps. One, called "Citizen John Ashcroft," shows Ashcroft's face fashioned from images of naked bodies at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Another piece -- "I saw it in a movie starring Steven Segal" -- shows a series of images of an airplane nearing, then crashing into the Sears Tower, and ends with the Chicago skyline without the skyscraper.

A Secret Service agent called the gallery again Friday, asking for contact information for Al Brandtner, a Chicago artist who created the Bush piece, Brown said. Brandtner could not be reached for comment.

'Just doing some looking into it'

The gallery didn't have the information because the show is made up of independent artists not tied to the college -- including Hernandez, a Chicago artist who not only organized the show but has works featured in it. Brown said she referred the agent to attorneys representing the artists.

Secret Service spokesman Brandon Bridgeforth said he couldn't go into specifics about last week's visit.

"We are doing some inquiries into the art exhibit. We're just doing some looking into it," Bridgeforth said.

Columbia College spokeswoman Micki Leventhal said agents were responding to citizen complaints about the artwork, which received some pre-show publicity in Chicago media.

Leventhal said news of the Secret Service visit was surprising and unprecedented for any art show. She said the exhibit had opened in Philadelphia with no complaints. Columbia agreed to the exhibit because of its "high artistic standards" and supports it even though the artists are not affiliated with the college, she said.

"We're an art school. Our position has always been and remains: We support freedom of speech, freedom of artistic expression and academic freedom," Leventhal said.

Hernandez said any government involvement could come close to trampling First Amendment rights.

"It frightens me ... as an artist and curator. Now we're being watched," Hernandez said. "It's a new world. It's a Big Brother world. I think it's frightening for any artist who wants to do edgy art."

Hernandez said he hopes the public sees the exhibit as a whole -- and not just about one man or even one country. Some works Hernandez thought would be more controversial challenge Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Church. Others look at Nazi Germany and the killing fields in Cambodia.

He refused to talk about the 2001 incident, when he was suspected of being involved in a fake anthrax stamp that shut down an area of Chicago's main post office. Hernandez and another Chicago artist routinely sent fake stamps through the mail, then sold them for thousands of dollars.

The exhibit at Glass Curtain Gallery, 1104 S. Wabash, runs through May 11 and is dedicated to Chicago artist Ed Paschke, who died Nov. 25

My Best Friend:
http://www.posthoc.com/mybestfiend.htm

Werner Herzog reflects on his relationship with Klaus Kinski.

I haven't even seen Fitzcarraldo or Burden of dreams so I got a treat comin' some day.

His best quotes refer to the making of that film. First, on the jungle environment where they filmed--about how it's brutal, but in harmony-- a "harmony of overwhelming and collective murder. I love it... but I love it against my better judgement."

The other refers to Kinski's violent outburst. The indians on the film were ENTIRELY unaccustomed to this, and never settle disputes with conflict and use VERY VERY gentle body language with each other and gentle touching. So when Klaus would freak out they would sit back and look worried and tremble. But later, the chief told Hergoz "we were never afraid of that raving madman--we were afraid of you, you who were so quiet."

Near the end of the shooting, the indians asked Herzog if they wanted to kill Kinski for him when the shoot was over.

Impossible to summarize briefly. In short-short, patron to many artists of the Belle Epoque and into the twentieth century.

From Verlaine, Dubussey, and Toulouse Latrec, to Renoir, to Diaghilev of the Ballet Russ, to Ibsen, to Coco Channel.
Among her close friends was Proust, who I'm reading now.

Because I'm reading the Proust I went back to look some things up in the biography. So fucking fascinating!!! Unbelievable...

I'll post some excerpts this weekend when I have time.

He leaves those gross passions to more ordinary mortals, and unlimited credit is wealth enough for him. Dandyism is not, as many seem to think, an exaggerated love of fine clothes and material comfort. These things, to the perfect dandy, are mere symbols of his own spiritual aristocracy. Dandyism is primarily a desire to be individually original, but always within the limits of polite social convention. It is the love of startling others and of never being startled oneself."

LOS ANGELES -- Hip-hop artists have plugged in virtually every high-end brand from Cartier to Versace into their song lyrics. But now the Big Mac is about to get name dropped.
McDonald's wants to have its Big Mac featured in several hit song lyrics by summer.

McDonald’s Corp. has hired entertainment marketing firm Maven Strategies to help the fast-food giant encourage hip-hop artists to integrate the Big Mac sandwich into their upcoming songs.

Summertime airplay

The goal is to have several tracks hit the radio airwaves by the summer. Maven, based in Lanham, Md., has already approached record labels, producers and individual artists with the Big Mac proposal -- which emphasizes writing lyrics around the sandwich’s name alone, and not necessarily including McDonald’s or the Golden Arches. “Once we partner with a particular brand, we identify artists that meet the attributes of the brand,” said Tony Rome, president-CEO of Maven Strategies. He added that because artists have different styles -- some are more serious, some are more party driven -- “we always want to make sure their style works with the advertiser.” Maven also tries to identify when an artist is hoping to release a new record: An advertiser could time a new marketing campaign around the release of an album that features its product in a song.

Final song approval

For the deal involving the Big Mac, McDonald’s receives final approval of the lyrics, but it will ultimately allow artists to decide how the sandwich is integrated into the songs. “The main thing is to allow the artists to do what they do best,” Mr. Rome said. “We’re letting them creatively bring to life the product in their song.” Maven’s already started receiving several songs for consideration. Maven receives a consulting fee for its services. Music acts, however, will not receive payment upfront. Instead, they will earn anywhere from $1 to $5 each time their song is played on the radio.

Britney muzzles herself: Has Britney Spears bared too much? The pop star is taking a vow of silence after reading over a cover story in Allure in which she discussed her split with Justin Timberlake, her Vegas wedding to Jason Alexander, her post-honeymoon pudge and the rocky beginning of her current marriage to Kevin Federline. "We hit a little bit of reality, hardcore, after the first three weeks. But we handled it fine, and now things are starting to go really smooth," Spears told Allure. "Before we got married we were on tour, and we were just like kids, ordering room service, saying, 'Let’s go out tonight.' Then, all of a sudden, you have this home, you have the kids [Federline's two children from a previous relationship], you have to get the diapers, get the dog to the vet. It's this reality. Like omigod, I have to tell the maid to buy diapers and get the pool boy to walk the dog? Can't I just make out with Kevin all the time? Being married sucks." Writing on her Web site, Spears says, "I feel the article focused too much on my personal life and various events from my past. I've already dealt with these issues with the support of my family & friends and have fully moved on. In the future, I will refrain from discussing my private life in interviews."
