Re: ok, kids....time to turn on to jug bands...
Thu, December 18, 2003 - 8:07 PMthe dillards. one of my all time favorites.. also from salem, MO... the town i'm from. they found fame thru playing the Darlin' Family on the andy griffith show, but i swear they don't suck.
p.s. the old man and the girl singer are actors... the Dillards are the expressionless guitar and banjo players. -

Re: ok, kids....time to turn on to jug bands...
Fri, January 2, 2004 - 8:52 PMthat IS a damn good compilation and it is a key starting ground to finding the greats...
as far as "big" jug bands go (ie:easier to find) anything the Memphis Jug Band did is worth grabbin' ahold of. Gus Cannon's work as a solo artist and his work with Cannon's Jug stompers is epic.
the late '60's brought out a folk and blues revival that included the ol' timey jug sound and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band put out a few cuts that rival any put out by their preecessors.
currently, look into Bo Grumpus....not all tracks are jug related but all will make you tap your foot and look for a mason jar of somethin' and make you wish you had a porch and a hound to idle the day with...
