I had been a Department Head for 12 years with a tremendous amount of stress in the last couple years, I had been taking 750 mg Keppra and then was switched to 200mg Topomax as a prophylactic with 40mg Relpax for attacks. On the Keppra, I was having maybe one in a quarter and they were fairly mild, but since it was off label, my new insurance company refused to pay for it, so I was switched to Topomax on which, I was having about one good Migraine a month, sometimes tolerable, sometime not. I finally got into the job I wanted, great boss, very little stress, great people to work with and suddenly the Migraine count has gone to 1-3 a week and is taking me out of work completely. Do you think it is the sudden change that has caused the flair? This has been going on for a month now and I am wondering when it is going to let up. Can topomax be increased? I am going to see my Pain doc tomorrow finally, but it has been extremely frustrating, having worked in an environment that I was constantly having to watch my back, not to mention having people in my face all day long to a very busy and hectic job, but very little stress, one I am happy in (some people would be stressed out, but after my experiences, this is nothing) and a boss who has been very good to me through it all.
Any suggestions? I'm exercising daily (when I am not having a migraine), being very careful as to what I eat and getting plenty of rest.

Re: Sudden increase in migraines
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 10:46 AMMaybe the lighting is different? That's the only thing I can think of. Are you under fluorescent lights all the sudden, or perhaps have an older computer monitor with a crummy refresh rate?
Sorry to hear that you're getting migraines even with Topomax. Topomax was so horrible for me, I'd rather have migraines than feel so dumb and icky on it. -

Re: Sudden increase in migraines
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 11:15 AMno actually my old office was in the middle of a very sick building without windows under fluorescent lights with a crappy monitor. i am in an office that has a window all the way around, in fact, i can actually look outside when i am inside, but i am up and out more than ever, there are fluorescent lights above, i have a multi-spectrum light on my desk to add to the outside light. i am actually in a building right next to the water (a small bay i used to sail in). the monitor could be a problem, though since it is much smaller than my old one.
i haven't noticed any side affects like you described on topomax, i fully have my mind (when it isn't killing me), though i just don't think it is doing anything.
thanks, i've heard lots of nasty stuff about topomax and was really hesitant about taking it, but my stupid insurance company would rather care about their stock holders than their clients. -

Re: Sudden increase in migraines
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 3:30 PMTwo things occur to me that might affect migraine frequency:
* Your blood pressure is now lower.
* Your body produces corticosteroid under stress, which reduces inflammation. Less stress, less inflammation suppression.
Both of these are potentially major physiological changes...
