Sorry for the recent trouble, folks. I haven't been actively watching the tribe, but not for lack of wanting. If there is any trouble in the future, contact me at pamc@pamcurtis.com and I'll get rigth on it.

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Thu, January 18, 2007 - 10:02 PMHmm -- I see you kicked out Barry and deleted his posts.
I moderate two tribes myself, and that's not the course of action I would have taken. You are, of course, entitled to what action you see fit -- I won't debate your right to do that.
Barry is indeed an insufferable, arrogant know-it-all who is so oblivious to the feelings and opinions of others that he might even have Asperger Syndrome. But the tribe was already dealing with him in your absence. For you to come along like a belated parent after the kids have fought kind of assumes that we -- as adults -- can't take care of our own problems.
To Barry's credit, he was always polite, and never engaged in name-calling or ad hominem attacks. His major failing is the inability to acknowledge other points of view, or the subjective experiences of our individual migraines. Which means he comes off like a jerk.
But debate isn't always about making friends, or agreeing with people. Like many others here, I told Barry how I felt about his one-sided debating style. And there was certainly growing consensus that it sucked. But I still feel that his obvious shortcomings were no more obnoxious than many people in many other tribes I'm in.
Perhaps others here feel he needed to be deleted -- I'm not saying I speak for anyone but myself. But I would have kept him around. Look at it this way -- he generated more activity in this tribe than you may have ever had. How is that bad? -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Thu, January 18, 2007 - 10:09 PMI'm not just deleting his posts. I am in current conversation with him now. Yes, I haven't been on here, but due to technical difficulties that have just been cleared up. You have misinterpreted my actions. -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Thu, January 18, 2007 - 10:29 PMI saw deleted posts, noticed he's no longer on the member list -- what did I misinterpret?
Maybe you'll let us in on what's going on. Then there'll be less to misinterpret. :)
Sorry to hear you had technical difficulties. -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Fri, January 19, 2007 - 1:27 AMYou misinterpreted (or rather assumed) that the actions I had taken would be the only actions to be taken at all. I just got off the phone with Barry... we've been talking the last 3~4 hours... and we've worked things out. This tribe will be for the support of migraine sufferers, and Barry's going to create a new tribe (named something along the lines of "Migraine Scientific Theory") for the purposes of discussing/debating information about migraines, new studies out, pathogenesis theories, etc. This is so people looking for sympathy don't get a debate, and people wanting to debate don't have to sift through irrelevent (heart-felt though it may be) emotional content.
See? Make sense now?
I don't know when his tribe will be up and running. He went off to bed (wisely so), and I'm up nursing a splodie head.

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Thu, January 18, 2007 - 11:26 PMAllen- I was the one who sent Pam a tribe message, asking her to take some action.
I see the Migraine tribe as a safe space to commiserate, to find information, and sometimes, just to be like "DAMMIT! Migraines suck!"
Having someone browbeating you, and telling you that what you believe is false, and telling you that your NEUROLOGIST is wrong, when we try so hard just to find scraps of information among all the b.s. that we get anyway as migraneurs.... I don't feel it's appropriate for this tribe.
I hear enough people telling me I'm wrong, and that "it's just a headache" , or so-and-so couldn't possibly be causing it. I don't need to here it here, where I try and share with others, and figure out that hey, I'm not the only one.
Barry wasn't providing anything positive, just more stress and negativity in a world where folks with migraines DO NOT NEED MORE OF IT. -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Fri, January 19, 2007 - 1:32 AMCheck out my reply to Allen...
Barry is *very* well educated on migraines, and while I don't agree with all his theories (nor he mine), his discussion does have a valid place. But there is a big difference between sympathetic and scientific communities, and the language of one can seem hostile to the other and vice versa. I think we were able to come to a copacetic arrangement, though.
You'll want to check out some of what he's written when you get a chance. He's done a lot of good work compiling those scraps of information into useful guides. I look forward to seeing his tribe on the science-side of migraines. -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Fri, January 19, 2007 - 3:18 AMPam -- you used THE PHONE?!
Wow. That's a new level of moderating I'm unwilling to do myself. Kudos, seriously. Is he as insufferable in conversation?
And HeatherLyn, I don't blame you for feeling that way at all. As I said, I was only speaking for myself. Though I don't feel you have to justify your actions to me, I nonetheless appreciate your explanation. And, obviously, if you read my posts, you saw me go through the same kind of frustration you describe in my dealings with him. But I, unlike many people, actually like to argue -- to a point.
Glad it's solved one way or another. Now we can get back to good old-fashioned pain and misery here. -

Re: recent trouble - Moderator here
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 3:13 AM*bows* Thank you. Yeah, phone is better for resolving conflict all around (the only thing better being f2f).
Barry is a healthy debater in person as well as online. We didn't always agree, but we were able to acknowledge those points and move on. I'm just glad we were able to find a copacetic arrangement for all parties involved. That's worth a phone call to me. ^_^
