Nymphomania

topic posted Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:32 AM by  Diane
My boss (a nun) and I were discussing a former student yesterday and she lamented on this student's many problems here, one of which was that she was a "nymphomaniac." I just had to smile, because the first thing that popped into my mind was what an odd "condition" that is. (And to be "diagnosed" by a nun!!)

Webster's defines nymphomania as "excessive sexual desire by a female." I love Webster's. I always have to look up another word when I read their definitions. This time it's the word "excessive." LOL.

Excessive: "exceeding what is usual, proper, necessary, or normal." Oh, great, now I have to look up "proper," *necessary* (HAHAHAHAHAHA!) and "normal." Oh, never mind!

But my REAL question is, why do you never hear the word for the "male version" of nymphomania???? ¡Qué sorpresa!
(The word is "satyriasis.")

We're a big "psychology campus" here, so I found out that these words have been replaced by "hypersexuality." But really, I question even this term. Everyone's got their own "normal" where sex drive is concerned. And *certainly* a nun's idea of nymphomania cannot be anything close to a college co-ed's!!!!

Hey Diane... I found this in my ever so useful Urban Dictionary
    www.urbandictionary.com/define.php

    1. nymphomaniac

Hypersexuality: a female whose sex drive is obsessively high. Considered a mental illness, coloqiually means a horny girl. Not to be confused with slut or skank where one's sexual dignity is pathetically low, nymphomania is simply related to an abnormally high sex drive.

Jen fucked me 20 times yesterday, def a nymphomaniac, im tired, she needs tranquilisers

    2. nymphomaniac

Person addicted to sex; mostly girls, cant get enough sex

Damn, megan wants it all the time. Shes such a nymphmaniac!

mainly females; never satisfied even after the greatest shag marrathon ever they are still gagging for it.

man: goodnight baby that was so good
nympho: excuse me? goodnight? wtf happened to round two?

    4. nymphomaniac

The kind of girl a real man wants because she actually likes sex and is good at it.

Tina rides so good because she's such a nymphomaniac

    5. nymphomaniac 101 up, 47 down

obession with sex; has to have it at all times.

I told my physchaitrist I was cheating with three different men and couldn't stop. She told me, I may be a nymphomaniac or for short a nypho.

    6. Nymphomaniac 109 up, 61 down

Someone that is obssessed by sex.

    "I'm a nympho, let's do it now!"

    7. Nymphomaniac

A woman who wants lots of sex or sex with more than one person. Commonly used by men to describe a woman who knows more about sex than they do or wants it more than they feel like providing.

Kimberly was called a nymphomaniac by certain men only because she was knew more and was better at it then most.

    8. nymphomaniac

    hypersexual young lady.

Dude! I heard Jess was a nymphomaniac!
    Yes, now calm your nipples.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    1. Satyriasis

Uncontrollable sexual desire in a man's behavior.

The constant/random need/desire for sexual interaction.

    For women this is nymphomania.

Once I realised I had Satyriasis it all made sense - no wonder I couldnt keep my hands out of my pants.

    2. satyriasis

A psychological condition where a male engages in sexual activity compulsively and without joy.

It's a male myth about feminists that we hate sex. It can be a natural, zesty enterprise. But unfortunately there are some people--it is called satyriasis in men, nymphomania in women--who engage in it compulsively and without joy. These unfortunate souls cannot love in the true sense of the word.

    3. Satyriasis

The male version of a nympho.
A male who is addicted to sex and nothing but sex. He doesn't care about work or school, only sex.

My homie Wes is a satyriasis, he fucks every girl he meets.

But seriously. ; ) I wrote this here because of the relationship between goddess and sexuality. (And hey! It's just about SPRING!) And my question is serious.

Why is the feminine form of the "disorder" a household word, and the masculine version almost unheard of?

And (for that matter) why are women with a high sex drive looked down on and "that's just the way men are." ??

    A Poem to Freya
from www.angelfire.com/va/goddesses/frey.html (produces a pop up add or two... sorry)

    There was a time
    in the beginning
a time when there was nothing
    a time when I danced
    my dance of sexuality
    the energy of creation
    and with that dance
give it to All as my gift
    Sexuality brought union with me
    with Goddess
    with spiritual ecstasy
    Sexuality healed and wholed
    regenerated and invigorated
Sexuality wove you into the web of all being
    life
for life lives to express itself
    Whether it be new life
    vitality
    rites of pleasure
    limitless possibility
    whatever you choose
    sexuality is life's expressive dance
    and its greatest gift

On another rather puzzling note, related hereto:

The news had a story this week that 1-4 teenage girst have some sort of STD.

Assuming just for the sake of my question that this is true and not some statistical particle of equine fecal matter, my question is:

WHY? (beyond the obvious, that supposedly they are having lots of unprotected sex)

Well, my answer is that yes, they are having a lot of unprotected sex. They have acted against the belief that girls should not do this, but haven't neutralized the belief that it is wrong, hence they suffer the consequences. The old consequence used to be pregnancy, which cut short many a girl's career as a "nympho".

Why? I hold to the hokey new age belief that guilt causes the consequence, not the action. I know, I'm weird. But as soon as girls figure this out, (and guys too) the better, in my opinion.

So, you say, "Todd. Are you telling me that a person contracts an STD because s/he feels guilty about having sex?"

Me: "Yes. Generally speaking, that's the biggest reason. That and the belief that sex for fun at any age, much less as a legal minor, is 'wrong'."

        blogs.wsj.com/health/2008...n-not-panic/

"Todd. Are you telling me that a person contracts an STD because s/he feels guilty about having sex?"

Of course she feels guilty. Abstinence-only anti-education programs tells her what a bad girl she is. "Sex is bad, bad, bad! You *like it?* BAD!!! You deserve to get an infection!"

Part of healthy sexuality is having a love and respect for your sexy self and for the sexy self of your partner. Abstinence-only crap does not teach love and respect. In fact, it teaches *nothing* about relationship. Only about the "dirty deed." sigh.

Diane, I think we both agree that guilt is present here.

I know you don't mean to imply that I think "s/he deserves to get an infection".

I just want to be real clear--I believe that the s/he BELIEVES that s/he deserves to get an infection, or some other unpleasant result. As a result, they do.

I think many of us that came of age in the seventies were lucky when promiscuous sex was de rigueur and the consequences minimal ,since most women were on the pill at the time and there were few STD's proliferated through the populace. This gave us the opportunity to really explore our sexuality with impunity and learn a hell of allot about relationships, what works and what doesn't...
I think we all get indoctrinated with sexual bias in many forms , just like the fact that there is no commonly known and used word in our society for a nymphomaniac in men. Here's another. There is a common use of the term misogyny but very little use of the reverse term, but this is NOT because there aren't women that hate men...
            Just saying...

I wonder how many men who feel guilty masturbating go blind. {-P

I'll think of something a little more profound later... I couldn't help myself with this one. *grins*

Todd, absolutely I did not mean to imply that you think anybody deserves an infection! That phrase was an echo of what goes on in the guilt ridden head of the young woman (or man) involved. Sorry to not be clear about that! It's exactly as you say, "I believe that the s/he BELIEVES that s/he deserves to get an infection..." That's the point I was trying to make too.

It's totally none of my business, but of course I had to play with the words a little. You left them out there like hand made rings. Can you imagine a telephone with hand-made rings? And so I should call you both "Very Healthy?" How about VH2 for short?

Oh, and did anyone read that statistics about teenagers? They say 40% have some kind of STD. Eventually, very healthy is going to be in the minority. Those without something are going to be unhealthfully ill-equipped to deal with the future Thorn Birds of our culture.

I've got a take on this. The nun, in psychological terms, was as you implied probably projecting either her desire or jealousy.

Second take on nymphomania, which may make me look bad, but I find these contractions much more fun than personal. Had a woman over who claimed she a. had a crush on me for years and b. was a nymphomaniac; went to kiss her and got my kiss, but felt the event turn into a stop sign, so I refrained from exploring her meaning. I surmised her crush had nothing to do with my sex appeal. Perhaps she had been molested as a child, where she might have just wanted to see if she could control a man. At least in my case, this so-called nympho and I have been platonic ever since. Still, at a party the other day, she came over and sat next to me as I was striking out left and right and l felt like the most boring person in the world, and she said, "Oh Mario." It was a tender moment, certainly much better than that moment when you've slept with someone you knew wouldn't work out. I am operating on a much less self-destructive level. And I am garnering the respect of my female friends, whom I love. I think I am getting closer to being ready for one because as you know women are very wise even in their so-called nymphomania.

More interesting, "Your boss (a nun)?" Does that make you a nun? Or I guess the employee of a Catholic School?

LOL. Me? A nun? hahahahaha!! An employee of a catholic school, yes. A librarian at a catholic college, to be more precise. I LOVE my job, and all the nuns I work with there. They are very tolerant of the pagan in their midst and haven't even tried to convert me. They have even gone so far as to agree with me when I tell them how pagan *they* are (when we compare holidays). Truly, I have a great job with great people. Sometimes, though, they give me great discussion board fodder. LOL.
