Todd and all here deserve my my best answer

Todd's Question, in relation to the concept of Temptation and the art which Eli posted for us to enjoy and consider, is this:

'What do you think of my first post, where I'm saying that sometimes we create temptations to distract ourselves (for many and varied reasons)?'

I first was exposed to those temptations in science several years back. We have things which we know are true because they are confirmed and previously tested hypotheses, we have those things which we infer from available data which SEEM to be correct based on what we know, and those things which are PROBABLY TRUE, but we can gather no further data without additional investigation down lines which we may not understand. The data may be staring us straight in the face, yet we ignore it based upon our own misconceptions and biases which are their own forms of temptations created.

I was asked to write a chapter for a USGS Survey Bulletin regarding Advances in Industrial Minerals Research a few years ago, taking ideas from my own physical analyses and chemical analyses and attempts to come up with correlations between the two so that my readers could better understand the nature of the analyses and their importance in the overall process of road aggregate testing and selection.
I knew the correlations that I had discovered had never been found before, and needed to be reported in the general subject literature. Once the underlying WHY of how particular minerals reacted as they do in asphalt in long-term performance settings became known, what had been thought of as probable was thrown out. i had to have the initial comparisons to come up with testable hypotheses. Those hypotheses were then refined even further before the final project was completed.

And, true to the intent of a scientific investigation, I ended up with 6 additional questions which need to be answered. Perhaps at some point in the future when i attain some more funding, I'll go after those questions, but for now........

now, let's apply this same time of thinking to PEOPLE. This may be a failing of mine as a scientist, but I'm stating my bias up front here.

Women in general, men in general- - - ALL have their own physical, emotional, and personal characteristics and/or peculiarities that affect how I perceive them. These are MY person- to person biases. I apoloize to anyone who feels slighted by those biases, it's not how they're intended, it's merely my own preferences among the myriads of choices that other people and Goddesses place in my path.

I only seek truth in relationships - but to achieve truth, one must be up front and willing to give it freely also

I feel it to be my moral imperative to benefit others with my aid where necessary. If you are the recipient of my aid, no repayment is required nor requested. I merely ask that you give of your time to someone who needs it.

But above all, I hold it absolutely necessary that we all learn to love one another, and to give our best on a daily basis. For THAT is how the world will eventually untite, advance, and become closer together, in my opinion.

I only wish to be a Peacemaker, let me pursue that in my search for enlightenment and love.

    Thanks, Rhino!!

It's funny, and awesome how this diverse group of personalities, with all of our biases, beliefs, emotions and habits come together here. I think it's because to a large extent, we accept our selves and biases, beliefs, emotions and habits, and so can accept others and theirs, too.

Acceptance doesn't mean agreement, because we each have our own preferences, and what is true for one is not true for others. I won't get into the epistemology of Truth and truth. In my line of work, acceptance has a specific meaning which implies agreement. That's not what I'm saying here. I'm saying that others and what they have are acceptable in that, it's neither good nor bad, and they are neither good nor bad, in absolute terms.

Rhino has his truths and gliSTens has hers and Gina has hers, etc. Some are agreeable to others and some not. They are all acceptable, and we all accept those and them to a large extent.

That's why Lilith left the Garden, in my version of the Myth. She was not acceptable in Adam's eyes, and this she'd rather not live with. She was judged because she wanted to ride on top, sometimes. This was neither agreeable nor acceptable to Adam, and so she was neither, also.

Rhino's way of gathering information and knowledge is fine with me. I've lived with science all my life. I have to use it in part of what I do. it's perfectly valid, but I must say it's not absolute. And that's fine with me. :-) There's other valid ways of gathering information and knowledge, and they are not absolute, either.

Rhino does his best in the moment, and that's acceptable.

    KEWEL!

    Namaste'

Rhino, I'm so glad to hear you talk about this.. I've always been surrounded by very scientifically minded people, not exclusively - but I'm bound to, being a seeker for truth. Although science has changed and improved our lives unimaginably, what my objection to the scientific method is, is that you have to be asking the right question in the first place to find the truthful answer, and it is so easy through innocence/ignorance to get this wrong. Although this to my science friends is self-evident, they seem to always fall into this trap when we discuss matters of truth - especially when it comes to human matters, or more specifically matters of the sexes.

To go back to the Lillith myth, my take on it is that Adam and Lillith argued for supremacy constantly and did not try hard enough to find common ground and a situation that suited them both. Lillith did the stupidest thing - she walked out on the garden of Eden and all her divine inheritance rather than give in. Why didn't she tell Adam to leave if it was that bad? Anyway, Lillith could only then glimpse in throught the gates and mourn her loss and regret her impulsiveness, seeing passive, people-pleasing Eve and smug Adam enjoying all that should have been hers.

I still feel that Lillith is there, watching us, in the last couple of centuries, she's given us a bit of a kick up the tush.

How this relates to the scientific method.... I find that because of the tradition of discourse, questions about Lillith are actually asking about Eve which is looking for answers in the wrong place. ...What I mean is - If you want to know what Lillith has to say, don't ask Eve!

Rhino, I also feel it is so important to be up front about our perception of the truth in the search for peace, love and understanding.
Human intelligence couldn't function if we did not compartmentalise/catagorise the things we experience, otherwise an adult would be no more equipt to deal with life than a new-born baby -which means we must all have biases whether we are aware or not. Those biases can be true or a barrier to truth and only by openess with eachother about what we believe, can we learn and grow by re-examining the beliefs that clash with others people's, or no longer seem to fit the facts. I welcome this process - I want to learn and grow- I don't want to walk around with some big fat blind spot that I'm completely oblivious to!
So feel free to share your particular biases - they will be food for thought! xx
