Another Square Dance!! (Berkeley, CA)
Sat. May 6
7 PM to 11 PM (may go later if things are really hopping!) -- please note that this dance starts early!
Earlier portion (7 to 8 or 8:30) will be geared towards families and less experienced dancers.
Ashkenaz
1317 San Pablo Ave, near Gilman
Admission is just $12 -- kids 12 to 18 get in for $6. Kids under 12, FREE!
Callers are Tony Mates (from Seattle) and our own Evie Ladin (Stairwell Sisters). Both are very
experienced and fun-loving callers who will tailor the dances to the mood of the crowd. All dances will be taught, no experience necessary!
The evening starts with a rare public appearance by Thompson String Ticklers -- raggy and bluesy 1920's fiddle tunes, with fiddle, cello(!), banjo-uke, mandolin, and guitars -- with Suzy Thompson, fiddle; Eric Thompson and Dan Warrick, guitars; Dave Murray, mandolin; Dan Kluger, banjo-uke, and Kevin Gerzevitz, cello. Next up is the Squirrelly String Band from San Francisco -- wild hard-driving music with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and washtub bass -- modelled on the Roane Mountain Hilltoppers, who were the ne plus ultra of funky oldtime dance bands! The band members are: Dave Murray, fiddle; Debbie Berne, banjo; Allegra Yellin, guitar; and Rachel Kraii, washtub bass. Both bands have taken first place (in different years) at the Berkeley Old Time Convention's String Band Contest.
The family dances that Evie and company have put on over the past few months have been REALLY hopping! Come early and stay late! All ages are welcome!
