Think of traditional African-American music, and the genres that come to mind are gospel, blues and jazz; few people think of old-time string band music. But the antebellum combination of banjo and fiddle used to be a tradition in most black rural communities in the South. The Carolina Chocolate Drops, a band of three young and talented musicians, are part of the revival of this venerable musical tradition. The Carolina Chocolate Drops honed their skills under the tutelage of octogenarian fiddler Joe Thompson, a North Carolinian who is one of the last black traditional string band players from the previous generation. Thompson, who grew up playing at barn dances, “frolics” and corn shuckings, wound up performing in ven- ues across the country, including Carnegie Hall.

I am learning this fiddle tune, which I've labeled "Crooked West Virginia," on mandolin. I really love this tune, so I'd thought I'd turn you all on to it! There are a ba-zillion versions, and most are called "Pigeon on a Gate" and they are Irish reels. This one is truly a West Virgina tune, but does have the oft-heard Scottish influence that you hear in Appalachian tunes. I wrote my own tabs, while listening to my husband play it. He learned it in the 1970s from listening to a cassette tape of a friend playing it over the telephone!!! You can see my tabs in my photo album. http://people.tribe.net/kalicleo/photos/57e6ae85-1780-4d3c-8a5c-eb862de2f394

On the surface it seems very easy, and really it is not hard, but the timing is so bizarre that it takes some getting used to. It switches to a march for one measure, and the syncopated rhythm alternates, too.

If you can read my handwriting, maybe you'll learn it too if you haven't already! I used regular music notation paper, not tablature paper, so I've put the notation in the spaces, not on the lines.... each space representing a mandolin/fiddle string, each number the mandolin fret.

I've looked on line for something about this tune. There are two websites to share... one to find the ABC notation, and the other to convert it to sheet music and a midi:

1. http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/FCfiles.html -- if it ain't there, it doesn't exist (fiddle tunes) ... Copy the ABC notation from the tune you want.

2. http://www.concertina.net/ -- click on the tune-o-tron link and paste the ABC in there to get music & a midi.

Unfortunately, even though they LIST Pigeon on a Gate Post, they do not provide the ABC...

Next up is the Squirrelly String Band from San Francisco -- wild hard-driving music with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and washtub bass -- modelled on the Roane Mountain Hilltoppers, who were the ne plus ultra of funky oldtime dance bands! The band members are: Dave Murray, fiddle; Debbie Berne, banjo; Allegra Yellin, guitar; and Rachel Kraii, washtub bass. Both bands have taken first place (in different years) at the Berkeley Old Time Convention's String Band Contest.
Hi there!

This Tuesday at Julie's we'll be joined by Paul Kotapish and the legendary Mayne Smith on dobro. Mayne has been around the local music scene for ages. He writes funny songs and also sings a mean country blues.

And, for our second surprise: It turns out that the manager of Julie's, Heidi Miller, has a bee-yoo-ti-ful voice. (You've probably seen her at the shop. She's the congenial red-head who works behind the counter.) She and I have worked out a couple of country duets that we'll trot out tonight. We may get her to sing a song or two on her own as well.

It will be a good night to stop in at Julie's friendly tea shop. We hope you can join us.
1898 Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs, C&W Singer/Banjo, b. West Norton, VA, USA. d. Feb. 7, 1971 (his birthday)
Biography
by John Bush
Dock Boggs was just one of the primeval hillbillies to record during the '20s, forgotten for decades until the folk revival of the '60s revived his career at the twilight of his life. Still, his dozen recordings from 1927 to 1929 are monuments of folk music, comprised of fatalistic hills ballads and blues like "Danville Girl," "Pretty Polly," and "Country Blues." Born near Norton, VA, in 1898, Boggs was the youngest of ten children. (He gained his nickname at an early age, since he was named after the doctor who delivered him.) Boggs began working in the mines at the age of 12. In what remained of his spare time, he began playing banjo, picking the instrument in the style of blues guitar instead of the widespread clawhammer technique.
Boggs began picking up songs from family members and the radio. He married in 1918 and began subcontracting on a mine until his wife's illness forced him to move back to her home. He worked in the dangerous moonshining business and made a little money playing social dances.
His big break finally came in 1927, when executives from the Brunswick label arrived in Norton to audition talent. He passed (beating out none other than A.P. Carter), and recorded eight sides in New York City for the label. Though they didn't quite flop, the records sold mostly around Boggs' hometown. He signed a booking agent, and recorded four more sides for W.E. Myer's local Lonesome Ace label. The coming of the Great Depression in late 1929 put a hold on Boggs' recording career, as countless labels dried up. He continued to perform around the region until the early '30s, however, when his wife forced him to give up his music and go back into the mines. Boggs worked until 1954, when mechanical innovations forced him out of a job.
Almost a decade later, in 1963, folklorist Mike Seeger located Boggs in Norton and convinced him to resume his career. Just weeks after their meeting, Boggs played the American Folk Festival in Asheville, NC. He began recording again, and released his first LP, Legendary Singer & Banjo Player, later that year on Smithsonian/Folkways. Two more LPs followed during the '60s, although, like his original recordings, they too were out of print not long after his death in 1971.
The revival of interest in early folk music occasioned by a digital reissue of Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music finally brought Boggs' music back to the shelves. In 1997, John Fahey's Revenant label released Complete Early Recordings (1927-1929), and one year later His Folkways Years (1963-1968) appeared.
The benefit is on Jan 21 in the evening. We're raising money to put up an independent community (pirate) radio station in Felton.

We'll be showing Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? We'll have a movie, speakers, and food. And we hope to have music.

Any ideas? Are you tight with a bunch of old-timey musicians in the Santa Cruz area?

Hi there, for those of you in Seattle, there is an awesome Old Time Bluegrass band playing this Thursday night at Connor Byrnes Pub, starting at 9. They are a fairly new local band that are a cross between old time and bluegrass. They have a very traditional sound, includes mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo and upright bass. Play a lot of old fiddle tunes, and quite a few originals. Also, opening up is a traditional Mexican folk duo on guitar and violin. It will be a great show, you should come and have some fun if you're in town. You can listen to the Tallboys on their web page at www.thetallboys.net. I tried to post this as an "event" but it didn't work, so I'm just doing it this way. Hope to see some of you there. Take care, Justine
