In the mid 90s my 1st troupe got a $400 gigue dancing in a federal prison for about 550 prisoners, we were in a gym and they were seated on bleechers (sp?). My teacher had specifically said no video taping, and yet there were cameras set up. Why? in case a riot broke out they would know who started it (ah yes, they were in fact facing the wrong way!) At the last minute the woman who hired us panicked and we had to layer ourselves in our veils as to not expose bellies. Once we began dancing the Muslim men in our audience (according to their religion) got up and pilgrimed outta there. Pretty distracting since there were so many.
Finally when the bill went across the big-guy's desk, he refused to pay! My teacher threated to write letters to the newspaper, etc and I guess they decided it would be better to give her the money!
