I had my first solo paid gig this weekend. This rural high school in a tiny, tiny town hired me to dance for their prom. The theme was "Arabian Nights."
I was a little nervous, because they had told me the school board was worried about showing too much cleavage, so I wore a choli, instead of my new bedleh (I think I could have gotten away with the bedleh). There were less than 200 kids in the school and they did a great job on decorating. They painted all of the students' names in English and in Arabic, underneath it. I was impressed as this would have taken a significant amount of research and I was also surprised given the political situation.
They seemed to really love the performance and I was baffled at the fact that I finally attended a prom...as a bellydancer.

Re: the prom
Mon, October 16, 2006 - 10:12 PMWow, baffled, that is the word I would use. Glad they LIKED your performance,
here in LA LA land, the last few HS gigs were disasters!
I REALLY try to perform to my audience, props, music to keep them interested, (yes, we still use that ancient technology, CD's, we had to explain to them when we got there!) but the HS was impossible, they just looked at the three of us like we were aliens!
We were to dance with some of the staff there, to get them going, THAT they liked! (whew!)
Two of my friends also danced at a HS event (was it the prom? maybe) they did a few minutes, were paid and left. . . . . . : (
HS gigs in CA, "Just say no!"
