I have wondered this myself, as you might imagine. When you pray, you are rendering your body and your mind temporarily useless for the period of the prayer. Your hands are pressed together, and you are often kneeling. Your mind is occupied in some mantra, such as "Bless me, Father. I have sinned." Or 'Ohm', etc.
