After this mornings announcement that Washington Mutual Bank(Wamu) one of the largest banking Chains in the USA is going belly up and is asking for a buyout?
Lets examine what McCain meant by "Fundamentally" shall we?
We all know that John McCain and his Junkie Pain-Pills-Addicted Wife Cindy are "Evangelical Christians" this was disclosed earlier when they were asked "what Church do you attend"? naturally since they are both Republicans it was an "Evangelical Baptist Church".
Evangelicals look upon the word "Fundamental" or used in sentences as "Fundamentally" differently than Non-Evangelicals.
First,John McCain said our Economy was "Fundamentally Strong"...the very next Morning the largest Insurance Company in the United States went Bankrupt,Oooops...now what did Mccain really mean by our Economy being Fundamentally Strong if Wall St just took its BIGGEST DIVE since September 9-11?
Quickly his writer's had him change THAT Tune! Now it was: "The Workers of America(the Pee-ons like you and me!) were uh..."Fundamentally Strong". I'm glad McCain thinks SO as my freinds continue to lose their Jobs and their Homes at a RECORD Rate!
Now it's "America's "Fundamental Spirit" that is Strong...Uh Ohh...do I smell the "Jesus Factor" wafting In?
As an Evangelical Christian McCain had nothing left to reach for..so he reached out to the "Souls" of the American Worker(or Spirit) I guess he now means that Jesus is coming in to help us ALL out of the MESS his Political Party put us in almost 8 years ago. It's time to leave the "Jesus Factor" in the Bible at home and focus on the REAL Reason we are in this MESS,Mismanagement and GREED of the Republican party of wich McCain CANNOT escape from!
Non Christians (like ,,Me!) Really get pissed off when these Evangelicals use their Jesus as a Scapegoat and McCain has done just that!. Leave YOUR Jesus OUT of MY Government!
By October 1st McCain along with his sweetie(Palin) will have Buried themselves in changing stories and half-truths.
Mccain/Palin? Nope...theyve Blown It!

For your political pleasure, here are a couple of articles detailing Sarah Palin's under the rose dealings with the Christianoid right. Note, while much of this appears plausible, it remains hearsay so far as I can tell. This material presented for entertainment purposes only.

Still it does seem to supply some rationale for why McLame would choose such a total nonentity as his running mate, doesn't it?

Kopp Hiring Proved Palin's Fundamentalist Street Cred

by Alan Boraas, Anchorage Daily News

So far Gov. Palin's handling of Alaska's Troopergate has focused on why Commissioner of Public Safety Walt Monegan was fired. An equally important question is why Chuck Kopp was hired to replace him.

On June 30, 2008, David Brody of CBS News reported John McCain met in North Carolina with Rev. Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, director of the multimillion-dollar Samaritan's Place faith-based charitable organization. McCain was courting the religious right who, at the time, were skeptical of his social conservatism and his Christian qualifications. After the meeting Graham issued a statement praising McCain's "personal faith" and added, "We had an opportunity to pray for God's will to be done in this upcoming election."

Subsequent events suggest that the price of support for McCain by the fundamentalist Christian leadership would be a vice presidential candidate of their liking. Gov. Palin was a logical choice for Franklin Graham, whose ties to Alaska include a palatial, by Bush Alaska standards, second home in Port Alsworth: a community that has often served as a retreat for Christian fundamentalist leaders.

But Gov. Palin did not promote a socially conservative agenda during her first two years as governor and some Alaska right-wing commentators called her an economic liberal. Send us a sign, national fundamentalist Christian leaders seemingly said, that proves your credentials. In firing Monegan and hiring Kopp, Palin would have gained a controversial measure of revenge in a family dispute and established her standing as a Christian conservative politician.

Kenai City Police Chief Chuck Kopp was a rising star in Alaska's Christian conservative movement. He was a frequent speaker at local religious and patriotic gatherings. He was school board president of Cook Inlet Academy, the fundamentalist Christian high school in Soldotna his missionary-educator father founded. Kopp also was on the board of Port Alsworth's Tanailan Bible Camp, also founded by his father.

Through Samaritan's Place, Franklin Graham has been the chief benefactor of the Tanailan Bible Camp building and rebuilding a church and meeting hall and guest cabins. The evangelical scion of Alaska, Rev. Jerry Prevo of the Anchorage Baptist Temple, is on Samaritan Purse's Board of Directors, so there's a clear connection between Graham, Prevo and Kopp.

Kopp's nomination quickly ran into trouble because of sexual harassment reprimands while Kenai police chief, but Palin's willingness to appoint him to a high state position along with her anti-abortion, pro-creationist beliefs seems to have solidified her position as the one to ignite the base for McCain. Kevin Merida reported in the Washington Post that when Palin met with the Alaska delegation after her nomination during the recent Republican National Convention, Rev. Prevo, a member of the delegation, said Palin asked them to pray for her. Then Prevo handed the governor his cell phone; it was Franklin Graham calling to congratulate her.

Palin's connection to what Jeff Sharlett has called "elite fundamentalism" is of interest now that she is an election and a heartbeat away from the presidency. Franklin Graham has been the keynote speaker for the Alaska Governor's Prayer Breakfast the past two years. According to their Web site, the organizers believe, "God directs the affairs of Man and is the ultimate authority over human events." The Alaska Governor's Prayer Breakfast is connected to the National Prayer Breakfast sponsored by The Fellowship Foundation, also known as "The Family," which espouses similar beliefs. The Family is headed by Doug Coe, one of the most influential evangelicals in Washington, D.C. Coe's group tends to operate behind the scenes organizing small cells attended by the power elite, mostly Republicans. George Bush was saved in such a cell while in Texas.

Elite fundamentalists believe, according to Sharlett, not only in religious determinism but that they are personally chosen by God to be in positions of power. By claiming divine legitimacy of their political power, elite fundamentalists relegate the opposition to being the devil's tool. They are making a frighteningly close return to the pre-enlightenment concept of rule by divine right, which our founding fathers rejected as anathema to democracy and established, instead, the separation of church and state lest decisions be made on the basis of good versus evil rather than wise versus unwise.

Whether or not Sarah Palin pandered to the Christian fundamentalist right on the back of a good man's career and believes she was chosen by God only she can say. Likewise, only John McCain can say whether he sold his political soul and selected the least prepared vice presidential candidate in United States history for the sake of political gain. The electorate deserves some answers.

Alan Boraas is a professor of anthropology at Kenai Peninsula College.

***

Guess Who Filed Suit to Halt Troopergate

From the Election confidential blog

On September 16th ABC News reported, "A group of Alaska Republican lawmakers, with the support of a Texas-based conservative legal group, has filed suit to stop the Alaska Legislature's "Troopergate" probe into Gov. Sarah Palin." The ABC coverage was not untypical of mainstream media coverage generally and is not being singled out for scrutiny.

This "Texas-based conservative legal group" is generally referred to as LLI (Liberty Legal Institute). Their website, which is very open and honest, may be found here.

To describe the LLI as a "conservative legal group" is like describing O. J. Simpson as a "well-dressed African-American". Both are true, as far as they go.

LLI describes themselves as, "a 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1997 to protect religious freedoms and First Amendment rights for individuals, groups and churches." This self-description is from the front page of their website. The site also quickly makes clear that the First Amendment Rights they defend are those of the religious right. The banner of one page proudly displays this quote, "Group is the flip side to ACLU. [sic]" - Dallas Morning News

A quick click on the "Cases" tab reveals 14 cases under the headline of "Recent Cases". Briefly looking through the summaries, 11 are plainly related to religion. In the other three cases a connection to religion is unclear. One has to do with a high school student's political tee shirt, one has to do with a political contribution and one has to do with the wording on a town monument. All case were based in Texas.

The question the list raises is what interest does this firm have in the firing of a Police Commissioner in Alaska? Nothing in their past or in their charter shows an interest in such cases. They have no offices outside the state of Texas and work only pro bono cases related to civil liberties.

Enter the Arlington Group.

LLI is a member of the 75-member "Arlington Group", a Washington-based, religious-right consortium which seeks to influence government policy on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. The Arlington group was founded in 2002 through the joint effort of powerful members of the religious right including Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Chuck Colson, D. James Kennedy, Gary Bauer and Rod Parsley.

The groups first director was James Dobson. Although very influential then and now, the Arlington Group famously stubbed it's toe when they threatened, in 2005, to oppose President George W. Bush's Social Security Reforms if he did not come out strongly against same-sex marriage. The media was angered and the compliance of the Bush administration failed to stem the tide of same-sex marriage legislation.

The Arlington Group effectively limits its self to what its members agree on. Pooled resources go toward the election and appointment of judges with anti-abortion and anti-same-sex marriage records. The group does discuss the possibility of getting behind a particular candidate, but it is not necessary that they agree. They are very effectively tied into a couple of very narrowly defined issues with which all members totally agree. The election of politicians is basically a means to the end of those politicians appointing judges who share their agenda.

So why is the LLI in Anchorage using words like "McCarthyism" to halt a bipartisan investigation of the Alaskan State Legislature into the Governor of that State? Here are a few possibilities:

1. It really is McCarthyism. The Alaskan Legislature wants to prove that Governor Palin is a communist plant for the now defunct Soviet Union.

2. The LLI believes that for a State Legislature to investigate the firing of a Commissioner by a Governor impinges upon the Governor's right to the religious expression required in such a firing.

3. The LLI believes there are no competent attorneys in Alaska, the RNC or any of the considerable number of states separating Texas and Alaska to help the embattled Governor.

4. The LLI believes that fired commissioner Walt Monegan and the State Senator heading the investigation, Hollis French are betrothed.

5. The LLI wants to pervert justice to perpetuate the strongest anti-abortion candidate ever. A candidate bold enough to strike rape kits from her city's budget because they contain emergency contraception (the equivalent to a "morning after pill").

Wouldn't it be a shame to find out that they are doing all of this based on number four, only to find out later that Monegan and French were divorced a year ago?

***************

***************

Would explain a lot, wouldn't it?

With love under will,

Of course Ms Palin being an "Evangelical Christian" would eventually get the praise and finantial backing from James Dobson of Colorado's "Focus On The Family"...that Notorious Nationwide Ministry that preaches hatred for Homo's and taking away any and ALL "womens right to choose" over what to DO with her unborn Fetus and who's belief on Abortion parrallels that of Ms Palins wich is,ANY and ALL Fetus MUST BE BORN,even if it was your own Daughter who was Raped by a serial killer...as long as that Christian baby inside her is allowed to BE Born, all is well and the Woman is "following God's Law".
James Dobson spoke at a Pro-Life Rally in....where ELSE? WASILLA AK of course! He was a keynote Speaker at Palin's own Hometown Church Wasilla's "Assembly of God" Church. Babbling-ON about The SANCTITY of Marriage and "reaching out to Alaskans,to help SAVE THEM from the Horrors Of Homosexuality".
Well Folks? NBC just this morning revealed that ONE of the Biggest Contributors of funding to BLOCK the Palin Investigation often reffered to as "Troopergate" was none other than James Dobson himself.
Was it a "LIE"? Was Dobson NOT at The Wasilla Assembly Of God Church?
NOT IN THE LEAST....why? becuase MY mother-in-law (my partner's Mom) was THERE holding up a Placard outside of the Church in Protest of Dobson's Appearance AT that Church.
As is with any Evangelical Christian Organisation "Evil Follows Evil".
You can all say whatever you want in Sarah Palin's defense...but I and "other's" KNOW she is a "Snake In The Grass" and lies like a Cheap Fur Rug! This is typical of BOTH being a Republican and an Evangelical Christian.
Curiously enough...Dobson didn't mention at all of Palin's Pregnant Unwed Teenage Daughter..it must have "slipped his Mind".

Cindy McCain "Chose" to abuse Vicodin and Percocet becuase she, like many weak Religious People LOVED the HIGH you get from them!
Cindy says "My Faith In Jesus Christ" pulled me through my terrible Addiction"..But...did IT? Uh...not until she enjoyed the High for over FIVE YEARS!
I used Vicodin and Percocet to relieve the AWFUL PAIN that is involved with any Spinal Column injury AS PRESCRIBED by my Dr and then ended their use when they were no longer needed. Cindy CHOSE to abuse these Drugs becuase they make you "Feel Good" and forget about all your problems in daily life.
ALL drug Abuse is a CHOICE,this just serves to underscore how a STRONG Belief in a Faith(Like Cindy's reliance on Jesus) can FAIL YOU Miserably!
Rome, Italy. - The long-rumored break-up of The Holy Trinity became fact yesterday, when The Holy Spirit held a press conference to announce his departure from the group. The other members of The Holy Trinity were not immediately available for comment. The break-up rocked the theological community, casting doubt on the belief that the Holy Trinity was not really a trio, but rather one God revealing himself in three ways.
Citing “artistic differences”, The Holy Spirit said that the trio had been bickering for years, and that he feels that the break-up will be best for all three members of the original power trio. “Even though we are all kind of the same God, we were stuck in a rut, artistically and personally. We’ve basically been doing the same thing for thousands of years”, said The Holy Spirit, “but we had a very popular and successful run, and I think we did a lot of great things together.”
Some industry insiders say that jealousy and bickering led to the disbandment, not artistic differences. Rumors of an unhappy Trinity had swirled for years, and when The Holy Spirit did not show up at a scheduled mass at the Vatican last week, speculation about the future of the trio again became front-page news. “The Holy Spirit has always been overshadowed by The Father and The Son”, said religion reporter Paulo Moretti. “They (The Father and The Son) did all of the writing and teaching, and they are mentioned in a lot more sermons and prayers. As a result, I think that The Holy Spirit felt overlooked, even though the three of them are essentially the same God. It’s pretty confusing, to be honest with you.”
The Holy Spirit did not summarily dismiss the speculation when he responded to a reporter’s inquiry about his future. “I hope that by releasing some solo material, the world will finally see what The Holy Spirit is all about. I feel that now I will finally have my own voice and my own identity. I will have complete control over my material, instead of having to run everything by (The Father and The Son) first.”
Moretti doubts that The Father and The Son will attempt to replace The Holy Spirit, but will continue as a duo. “I don’t think replacing The Holy Spirit is in the cards. He is unique in that he kind of floats around, and is everywhere at the same time, and that’s not an easy attribute to find. Besides, The Father and The Son are strong enough to continue on their own. I mean, The Father created the Earth, for God’s sake. And The Son sacrificed his life for us and forgave all of our sins. They will be just fine as a duo. Even though the three of them are really all just one God. Like I said, it’s pretty confusing.”
The Holy Spirit’s first solo offering titled “I Got Spirit, Yes I Do. I Got Spirit, How ‘bout You?” will hit stores next week. It will be a mix of different styles and will reflect the myriad of influences that The Holy Spirit credits for helping to form his sound. “Over the past several thousand years, I have been fortunate to be around a lot of great artists, from Michelangelo to Mozart to Darryl Hall and John Oates. I think my first solo effort will reflect that wide range of styles.” “I Got Spirit, Yes I Do. I Got Spirit, How ‘bout You?” also features several guest artists, including Missy Elliot and Henry Rollins, as well as a duet with Gwen Stefani.
Sometimes, I think the Pope just doesn't get art. A German sculptor created a work consisting of a crucified frog, holding a beer and an egg. Pope Benedict, unfortunately, sees it as blasphemy, and wants it removed. Not only is the Pope up in arms, local government leader Franz Pahl went on a freakin' hunger strike (and unsuccessful, at that) to get it removed. The most significant result of the protesting seems to be widespread international attention for the otherwise unremarkable sculpture. Art wins!
Presidential candidates should believe in God, Warren says
Saddleback Church pastor praises both top candidates, despite their different visions of America.
By GREG HARDESTY and ALEJANDRA MOLINA

LAKE FOREST If Rick Warren's media visibility gets any bigger, he may need more handlers than two guys named Obama and McCain.

Riding a wave of attention following a presidential forum Saturday, the pastor of Saddleback Church spent hours today under bright lights and in makeup, appearing on "Larry King Live" and the Fox News Channel's political gabfest "Hannity & Colmes."

Warren's goateed visage dominated the cover of last week's Time magazine, he's the lead story on today's "Nightline Online" Web site, and — for a moment, at least — he's stealing some cameras away from Michael Phelps and the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Warren's globally televised "Civil Forum" brought thousands into Saddleback Church to hear presumptive presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain answers questions about faith, abortion and their own moral failings, among other issues aimed at giving voters a clearer perspective on the character of the next U.S. president.

On "Larry King Live," which aired locally at 6 p.m. today, initial discussion focused on whether Warren misled people by saying McCain had been sequestered in a "cone of silence" while Obama was questioned first — when, in fact, McCain was in a car on the way to the church and had the opportunity to listen to the questions.

Warren, appearing via satellite from Lake Forest after 20 minutes of analysis by politicians and pundits, said he thought McCain had been in a "green room" when questioning of Obama began. He told King that he takes the presumptive Republican candidate's word that he did not gain an advantage by hearing the questioning of Obama.

Answering questions from King, Warren said he believes a person should have to believe in God in order to be president, and said he had nowhere enough time to ask the candidates about international issues like poverty, AIDS, disease and climate change.

King plugged Warren's upcoming book — "The Purpose of Christmas"— due this holiday season.

Warren gave kudos to both candidates.

"You could do a lot worse than both of these guys," he told King.

Also featured on Hannity & Colmes, Warren talked about the personalities of Obama and McCain.

Warren described Obama as "the thoughtful consensus builder… he likes to nuance of things and think about the different implications."

"John McCain is the happy, straightforward warrior, the commander and his answers were bam, bam, bam," Warren said.

When asked by Colmes which candidate he thought did better, Warren said they both were outstanding.

"They're both men who love America. I think they're both very smart men. I think they both have different visions," Warren said.

Unprecedented attention

Warren, in huge demand ever since, was too busy to talk to The Orange County Register today.

Said a spokeswoman: "He's going to be taking the remainder of the week off. He's going to be getting some rest after such a big weekend."

Of course, Warren is no stranger to the spotlight, having rocketed to national prominence in 2002 with his best-seller, "The Purpose Driven Life."

His nondenominational, evangelical Christian mega church is one of the largest and most influential in the country and the world, hosting such events as a global summit on AIDS.

The current wave of media attention on Warren, however, could be unprecedented.

Some members of Saddleback Church, which says it has a regular membership of 20,000 at its campus in southeastern Orange County, said they liked the openness of the forum and the attention it's receiving.

Angelica Wagner, a Saddleback Church member, said it can only benefit the church.

"How else do you get that message across, the message of God without the media?"

Wagner moved to Lake Forest from Del Mar about three months ago to be closer to the church. On Saturday at the Civil Forum, Wagner, a volunteer, played host to the media, giving directions to reporters and camera crews.

"I knew it was my mission to tell all these media types about the many ministries at Saddleback, and how these ministries made Saddleback such an intensely personal church, even with 35,000 people attending every weekend," she said.

A political scholar at California State University, Fullerton said the format of the presidential forum may serve Warren well as a high-profile evangelical pastor.

"Pat Robertson, et al, managed over time to create a situation in which high-profile evangelicals came to be seen as wholly owned subsidiaries of the Republican Party," said Phillip L. Gianos, chairman of the division of politics, administration and justice at Cal State.

"It reminds me some of a throwback to the Billy Graham days, since Graham made some effort to be seen as bi-partisan, at least in form," Gianos said in an emailed response to questions.

"Specifically, Warren's flock is suburban, and such folks, as he says, have interests beyond the limited agenda of the past," Gianos said.

"So long as Warren operates as a broker, I would expect two things to happen: more inclusion (i.e., more people comfortable in that flock) and greater moderation by virtue of that greater inclusion."
Fringe group sneaks into Canada to disrupt funeral for slain Winnipeg man
Church says decapitation was God's response to policies on abortion, homosexuality, adultery

Members of a U.S. fringe U.S. group crossed the border into Canada overnight and are hiding somewhere in Manitoba, preparing to picket Tim McLean Jr.'s funeral, the Winnepeg man murdered and decapitated on a Greyhound bus last week, the group's spokesperson claimed Friday.

Canadian border authorities had stopped a separate group from entering Thursday, but Westboro Baptist Church spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper said a second group managed to sneak through by sending identifying items separately by courier.

"They were looking for leaflets, which we don't do, and signs, which we do, but we have Federal Express," said Phelps-Roper. "Our guys are safely tucked away."

Tim McLean 22, was beheaded in the back of a Greyhound bus that was rolling across Manitoba toward Winnipeg.
Handout

Earlier this week, the church - an organization branded by some as a hate group and infamous for protesting the funerals of slain American soldiers - announced it would picket McLean's funeral to let Canadians know that his decapitation was God's response to Canadian policies enabling abortion, homosexuality and adultery.

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day's office had sent an alert to border patrol to "look out" for people with signs and pamphlets that fit the hateful messages that the church promotes and to keep them out of the country.

Phelps-Roper, 50, said she also received a phone call Friday morning from an RCMP officer who warned that their "God Hates Canada" placards could be against Canadian hate laws. She also scoffed at plans by some Winnipeg residents to stage a protective counter-protest against the Westboro militants saying: "God looks out for us."

Amidst the cacophony, McLean's family quietly went about final funeral preparations Friday morning for McLean's "celebration of life" service scheduled for Saturday in Winnipeg.

The family has also asked donations in McLean's memory be sent instead of flowers to TD Canada Trust. They plan to use the money for charitable causes "dear to Timothy's heart," according to his obituary published in the Winnipeg Free Press Thursday.

"He loved soccer, football, motorbikes, and generally anything that would get him into dirt and trouble," read the obituary. "Everywhere he went, he brought light and joy ... From your first breath, you were loved beyond imagination."

Along with his parents, aunts and uncles, McLean was also survived by four sisters and two brothers.

McLean, 22, was killed and beheaded in the back of a Greyhound bus that was rolling across Manitoba toward Winnipeg.

Vincent Li, 40, a recent immigrant to Canada from China, has been charged with second degree murder. It's alleged Li stabbed McLean repeatedly with a large knife, then cut off the man's head and carried it to the front of the bus. The court has ordered a forensic psychological assessment of Li.

Judge says UC can deny class credit to Christian school students

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge says the University of California can deny course credit to applicants from Christian high schools whose textbooks declare the Bible infallible and reject evolution.

Rejecting claims of religious discrimination and stifling of free expression, U.S. District Judge James Otero of Los Angeles said UC's review committees cited legitimate reasons for rejecting the texts - not because they contained religious viewpoints, but because they omitted important topics in science and history and failed to teach critical thinking.

Otero's ruling Friday, which focused on specific courses and texts, followed his decision in March that found no anti-religious bias in the university's system of reviewing high school classes. Now that the lawsuit has been dismissed, a group of Christian schools has appealed Otero's rulings to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

"It appears the UC is attempting to secularize private religious schools," attorney Jennifer Monk of Advocates for Faith and Freedom said today. Her clients include the Association of Christian Schools International, two Southern California high schools and several students.

Charles Robinson, the university's vice president for legal affairs, said the ruling "confirms that UC may apply the same admissions standards to all students and to all high schools without regard to their religious affiliations." What the plaintiffs seek, he said, is a "religious exemption from regular admissions standards."

The suit, filed in 2005, challenged UC's review of high school courses taken by would-be applicants to the 10-campus system. Most students qualify by taking an approved set of college preparatory classes; students whose courses lack UC approval can remain eligible by scoring well in those subjects on the Scholastic Assessment Test.

Christian schools in the suit accused the university of rejecting courses that include any religious viewpoint, "any instance of God's guidance of history, or any alternative ... to evolution."

But Otero said in March that the university has approved many courses containing religious material and viewpoints, including some that use such texts as "Chemistry for Christian Schools" and "Biology: God's Living Creation," or that include scientific discussions of creationism as well as evolution.

UC denies credit to courses that rely largely or entirely on material stressing supernatural over historic or scientific explanations, though it has approved such texts as supplemental reading, the judge said.

For example, in Friday's ruling, he upheld the university's rejection of a history course called Christianity's Influence on America. According to a UC professor on the course review committee, the primary text, published by Bob Jones University, "instructs that the Bible is the unerring source for analysis of historical events" and evaluates historical figures based on their religious motivations.

Another rejected text, Biology for Christian Schools, declares on the first page that "if (scientific) conclusions contradict the Word of God, the conclusions are wrong," Otero said.

He also said the Christian schools presented no evidence that the university's decisions were motivated by hostility to religion.

UC attorney Christopher Patti said today that the judge assessed the review process accurately.

"We evaluate the courses to see whether they prepare these kids to come to college at UC," he said. "There was no evidence that these students were in fact denied the ability to come to the university."

But Monk, the plaintiffs' lawyer, said Otero had used the wrong legal standard and had given the university too much deference.

"Science courses from a religious perspective are not approved," she said. "If it comes from certain publishers or from a religious perspective, UC simply denies them."

Plans to release a novel about Prophet Muhammad's child bride A'isha have been scrapped by US publishers Random House over fears it could spark violence.

The Jewel of Medina, the debut novel by journalist Sherry Jones, was due to hit shelves on 12 August.

Random House said it had been advised the book "might be offensive" to some Muslims, and "could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment."

"We decided, after much deliberation, to postpone publication," it added.

The decision was taken "for the safety of the author, employees of Random House, booksellers and anyone else who would be involved in distribution and sale of the novel," said the company's deputy publisher Thomas Perry in a statement.

The novel traces the life of A'isha, who is often referred to as Muhammad's favourite wife, from her engagement at the age of six, until the prophet's death.

Knoxville, Tenn. police has released a statement that a letter in the car of church shooter Jim D. Adkisson reveals that he targeted the congregation due to its liberal views on civil liberties and women’s and gay rights. Adkisson killed two people at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in the middle of a children’s performance.

Chief Sterling Owen IV said Adkisson had a “stated hatred of the liberal movement.” He is now charged with first-degree murder. Among the complaints against the church was its founding of a chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The children were performing “Annie” when Adkisson decided to kill people in the name of the true faith. According to reports, Greg McKendry, a 60-year-old usher and board member at the church, blocked the killer and was his first victim, click here.

It is simply astonishing that even a demented killer would think that God would want him to mow down Christians who are not sufficiently conservative, including children. Some reports indicate that he had problems with Christians in general, click here. It takes a lot of hate to walk into a scene of children performing in a religious sanctuary and turn it into a place of massacre. Of course, as with the Virginia Tech massacre, the story also reveals the best of humanity in those adults who confronted his man at the risk of their own lives. Had he not been restrained by church members, the death toll might have been much greater.

Ironically, the ACLU and these church members would likely be the first to defend Adkisson’s rights as he faces a potential death penalty for his alleged crimes.

I read about this story earlier today in an email from a news service. If I remember correctly, the preacher's name Anthony Hopkins. presuably no relation to the actor. He had been abusing his children for years and when his wife discovered the abuse and threatened to expose him, Hopkins murdered her, stored her body in the freezer for three or four years and began working as an itenerant preacher while continuing the abuse. Eventually his oldest daughter escaped and informed the police, who discovered the wife's body in the freezer. The incredible part of this whole bizarre tale is that when the police went to arrest him, they found Hopkins in church preaching; they decided to wait until the service was over before taking the murderer into custody. Why they would wait is a mystery, my suspicion is that it very likely was from a misplaced sense of respect for the ministry or for the church or even for God. Why this man should benefit at all from such phony sentiments is beyond my understanding.

Had I been leading the police detail, I would happily have marched into the church, stormed the pulpit and removed this cancer from the sanctuary. I would have been pleased to announce, "Pastor Hopkins, you are under arrest on charges of pedophilia and for the murder of your wife. Turn around and place your hands behind you. You have the right to remain silent. . ." In my admittedly biased opinion, that is all the respect this degenerate deserves.

Below is the abbreviated version of the story that I found through googling later today.

>>>MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A judge in Alabama has denied bond for a part-time evangelist who's charged with murder in the death of his wife.

The body of the victim, a mother of 8, was found in a freezer where it had been kept for at least three years. Authorities believe she was killed in 2004.

The evangelist, Anthony Hopkins, returned to jail after a brief court appearance today. He's the father of his wife's six youngest children.

He's also charged with sex crimes in what authorities say is a related case involving a female relative who's pregnant with his baby.

Investigators believe his wife, Arletha Hopkins, was killed when she discovered the sexual abuse.

His wife's disappearance was never reported to police. Hopkins had told her relatives that she was unavailable or that she didn't want any contact with them.<<<
Alabama's Anti-Gay Attorney General Caught in Bed with Male Aide
AG Troy King opposed sale of 'obscene devices'
By: Mark Kernes

Posted: 07/13/2008

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Okay; who said the following?

"The existence of the Gay-Lesbian Alliance on this campus is an affront to the state of Alabama, its citizenry, this university and its students."

"Currently, AIDS is the most behavior-oriented disease known to mankind. If this nation's current purveyors of perversion would refrain from committing sodomy, they would unquestioningly be spared the ravages of the disease."

"It is indeed sad that America has fallen to the point where she will condone any type of deviant, immoral activity in which a group desires to participate."

"I often hear the argument that homosexuals who live together create a loving, caring family environment, perhaps an environment which is even superior to that which can be provided by a heterosexual couple. In this day of rampant decadence, many homosexuals would mislead society into believing that three men, an armadillo and a house plant create a functional family."

If you guessed "Troy King, Attorney General of Alabama," give yourself a cigar!

That would be the same Troy King who, within the last couple of weeks - no exact date available - was caught by his wife Paige in bed with a male aide - in fact, a former "Homecoming King" from King's undergraduate days at Troy University - and subsequently thrown out of the couple's house.

Of course, King is best known to AVN readers as the current defendant in retailer Sherri Williams' fight to legalize the sale of "obscene devices" - adult novelties whose purpose is sexual stimulation - in the Eleventh Circuit (Alabama, Georgia, Florida), which case has been before a trial court three times, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals twice, and was recently rejected for certiorari by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Williams' case will also be the subject of a segment on ABC's "20/20" this Friday night.

"I don't know Troy King any more than having sat across the table from him during appeals hearings," Williams told AVN today. "But in my experience, it's the guys that are the guiltiest that prosecute the hardest."

The 40-year-old King, according to his Wikipedia entry, has three children, is a practicing Baptist, is anti-abortion - he once decried "the terrible 'cleansing' of the wombs that is carried on in the butcher shops we call abortion clinics" - attended the University of Alabama Law School and has been involved in several scandals while serving as Alabama's Attorney General, a job he obtained after his predecessor, Bill Pryor, was elevated to the Eleventh Circuit bench by President Bush in a recess appointment.

But while rumors that Gov. Bob Riley will ask for King's resignation in the wake of the bedroom discovery are unconfirmed, the announcement that King was named to be state campaign chairman of presidential candidate John McCain's Leadership Team in Alabama has been removed from McCain's Website, and King's hopes to succeed Riley as governor in 2010 appear to be over as well.

After all, as someone reportedly advised Lyndon Johnson as he was beginning his first term as U.S. Senator from Texas, "Once elected, a politician can stay in office until they are caught in bed with a dead prostitute or a live boy."

Gay man sues over anti-gay bible verses

Two Christian publishers are being sued by a gay man who claims they altered Bible verses to depict homosexuality as sinful. The man, author Bradley Fowler, is asking for $60 million in damages from Zondervan Corp. and $10 million from Thomas Nelson Publishing for malice, negligence and violation of his civil rights.

Fowler filed suit in Michigan on July 7, saying Zondervan Corp. was trying to persuade its readers that “homosexuals would not inherit the kingdom of God.” He filed suit earlier in June against publisher Thomas Nelson over its New King James Bible for similar homophobic text.

Fowler said he was “flabbergast(ed) to find out this Christian publisher had imposed its own opinions upon religious sectors, by fraudulently implementing the terminology 'homosexual' to its Bible.”

Zondervan Corp. countered by saying it relies “on the scholarly judgment of the highly respected and credible translation committees behind each translation and never alter the text of the translations we are licensed to publish… We only publish credible translations produced by credible Biblical scholars.”
In Mesquite, Texas, thieves drained $100 worth of gasoline from buses used by the Higher Ground Church day-care center and have hit four or five other church center fleets in the area.

"It was someone who was desperate," said James Green, the church's pastor. "All he had to do was come and ask us and we would have bought him a tank of gas."

The American Red Cross, meanwhile, is running a summer raffle where blood donors are eligible to win a year's supply of fuel.

At St. Ann's Parish in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the Rev. Edward McDonagh has decided to institute a drawing for a $50 gasoline card at weekly mass.

The drawings are symbolic gestures and not intended to boost attendance, he said.

In reality, the bible considers divorce a bigger issue than homosexuality and yet, I have created a realistic milestone for the Xtians to reach before they have the green light to preach aganist gay people. THe divorce significantly impacts a far more amount of people than the gay population does. If the church wants to impact America, than lower the divorce rate.

Message, to Xtains, clean up your own house before preach a gospel of intolerance to gays.

It's directed by Larry Charles, who directed Borat, and also worked on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and it looks hilarious.
American Family Association Launches Boycott Against McDonald’s For ‘Promoting The Homosexual Agenda’»

Today, the right-wing American Family Association (AFA) announced a boycott of McDonald’s. According to AFA, Ronald McDonald and his gang are part of giant gay agenda:

What the boycott of McDonald’s IS about

It is about McDonald’s, as a corporation, refusing to remain neutral in the culture wars. McDonald’s has chosen not to remain neutral but to give the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage.

AFA is upset at McDonald’s for refusing to condemn Vice President of Communications Richard Ellis’s decision to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). AFA President Donald Wildmon said the situation is “strange” because “it’s the family that McDonald’s appeals to — children’s playland, you know, all the little toys, all of that. And they are promoting a lifestyle that would utterly destroy the traditional family.”

So far, McDonald’s is holding strong, writing a letter to Wildmon on May 29 and rebuffing his attacks:

We treat our employees and our customers with respect and dignity, regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other factors. We support our employees’ personal involvement in organizations of their choice.

Although AFA tries to make clear that it is NOT protesting McDonald’s “hiring homosexuals” or “homosexuals eating at McDonald’s,” as Good As You notes, “Whether it’s a direct attack on gay customer or employees or an attack on particular employees role in a pro-gay capacity, this situation is still about the company supporting diversity (something the AFA resists at every turn).”

AFA has a long history of silly, offensive boycotts against, among others, Wal-Mart (for selling “Brokeback Mountain” DVDs), Ford Motor Company (for advertising in gay-friendly publications), and the American Girl dolls (because the maker contributed to a youth organization that was pro-choice and supported the acceptance of lesbians). In 2005, it called off its unsuccessful nine-year boycott of Disney (for its “embrace of the homosexual lifestyle“).

McDonald’s should follow Disney’s lead and ignore the right-wing protests. After all, during the nine years AFA was boycotting Disney, the company saw record profits.
Atheist Mistreatment in Iraq

Category:
Posted on: August 7, 2007 9:23 AM, by Ed Brayton

No, not by radical Muslims but by our own military. This email was forwarded to me from a soldier in Iraq whose friend is being harassed at another base for organizing a meeting of atheists on the base. The email was originally sent to Kathleen Johnson, the military director for American Atheists, who is currently serving in Iraq herself. The full email is below the fold:

Kathleen Johnson:

Thought you'd be interested in this report of the first-ever meeting of Atheist service-members in Iraq under the umbrella of the MAAF-Iraq chapter of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers. This meeting was put together by the same young MAAF member who recently had his second letter published in the Stars and Stripes.

One of our members, a young Atheist enlisted soldier, thought he would like to see if he could generate some interest in MAAF meetings at his Forward Operating Base (FOB) here in Iraq (not the base I'm at, by the way). He got things coordinated and started hanging flyers, and after weeks of having to re-hang his flyers almost daily because some vandal kept tearing them down, he finally succeeded in having a small MAAF meeting. I wasn't there because the meeting wasn't on my FOB, but I knew he was holding it and was expecting to hear from him after the meeting. Keep in mind that this young soldier did everything right - he went through the Chaplain's office and jumped through all the hoops it takes to legally hold meetings that are religiously or philosophically based. Four soldiers attended this meeting - all of them very junior enlisted soldiers with the exception of one Major (an O-4), who claimed to be a "freethinker".

Well, to make a very long story a little shorter, the Major turned out to be a fundamentalist Christian who verbally berated the other attendees, accused them of plotting against Christians and disrespecting soldiers who have died protecting the Constitution, and threatened them with punishment under the UCMJ for their activities (said they were "going down") and said he would do whatever it took to shut the meetings down. Keep in mind that by this point, he had two of the attendees (one soldier fled when the shouting started) standing at the position of attention so that he could yell at them, berate them, and humiliate them. This apparently went on for several minutes at which time the Major shut down the meeting by saying he wasn't some "push-over Chaplain" and that he would not tolerate the meetings to continue.

The young MAAF member who hosted the meeting is absolutely freaked out about what happened, but he said he's going to continue with the meetings and isn't going to be bullied by the prayer warriors. I've advised him to immediately notify the Chaplain sponsor of what happened to get guidance while I try to figure out what to do next. I should hear something back from him tonight sometime and there's even a small possibility I might be able to score a mission to his FOB and attend one of his meetings in the next few weeks (if I do, I'll meet with the Chaplain in person).

As for immediate action, he's going to get me the names of his Chaplain sponsor and the name of the officer who disrupted the meeting. My intent right now is to make a formal report to the most senior Chaplain I can find along with possibly an Equal Opportunity complaint against the officer if we can get him fully identified. I may not be eligible to make that complaint because I wasn't there, but I can at least smooth the way for this young troop to make one if he elects to. At the very least, I can make the EO office formally aware of what happened there.

More info will follow when I get it, but right now, feel free to disseminate this information since I've intentionally sanitized it for names and locations. I will be happy to forward any words of support to him if they get mailed to my (redacted email) address - he could really use some encouragement right now, I think.

I've forwarded it along with the contact information for this soldier to Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. They may have already been aware of it; if not, they are now. He'll raise an appropriate stink about it, I'm sure.

Here are some of the reactions from the mentally insane, superstitious, religious idiots:

"We don't know 100% what Mr. Cooks motivation was," said Susan Fani a spokesperson with the local Catholic diocese. "However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it."
We just expect the University to take this seriously," she added "To send a message to not just Mr. Cook but the whole community that this kind of really complete sacrilege will not be tolerated."

http://www.wftv.com/news/16798008/detail.html
"It is hurtful," said Father Migeul Gonzalez with the Diocese. "Imagine if they kidnapped somebody and you make a plea for that individual to please return that loved one to the family."
Gonzalez said the Diocese is willing to meet with Cook and help him understand the importance of the Eucharist in hopes of him returning it. The Diocese is dispatching a nun to UCF's campus to oversee the next mass, protect the Eucharist and in hopes Cook will return it.
Gonzalez said intentionally abusing the Eucharist is classified as a mortal sin in the Catholic church, the most severe possible. If it's not returned, the community of faith will have to ask for forgiveness.
"We have to make acts of reparation," Gonzalez said. "The whole community is going to turn to prayer. We'll ask the Lord for pardon, forgiveness, peace, not only for the whole community affected by it, but also for [Cook], we offer prayers for him as well."

http://www.catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1458
"For a student to disrupt Mass by taking the Body of Christ hostage--regardless of the alleged nature of his grievance--is beyond hate speech. That is why the UCF administration needs to act swiftly and decisively in seeing that justice is done. All options should be on the table, including expulsion, said Bill Donahue.

http://www.myfoxorlando.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail;jsessionid=912931E6387D06E86603288C86CA66A1?contentId=6932236&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1
University officials said, that as for right now, Webster Cook is not in trouble. If anyone or any group wants to file a formal complaint with the University through the student judicial system, they can. If that happens, Webster will go through a hearing either in front of an administrative panel or a panel of his peers.

The college is now having armed university police officers standing guard during mass.

Conservative Christian Group Invokes Slavery In Opposing Obama

The Christian Defense Coalition held their anti-Obama press conference today -- "An Appeal to Catholics Regarding the 2008 Presidential Election" -- complete with the "I want you to pay for abortions" Obama-as-Uncle-Sam picture we told you about Monday as well as some other interesting material.

Argues the CDC: "if that issue involves a fundamental right, such as the right to life for a certain group of human beings, and there is only one morally legitimate position on that issue…no faithful Catholic would vote for a candidate who, although 'personally opposed to slavery,' supported 'a white man's right to choose' to own slaves."

http://jonathanturley.org/2008/06/26/faith-based-favors-justice-department-official-fired-after-invoking-the-fifth-amendment-in-congressional-investigation/

Michele DeKonty, who served as chief of staff at the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), has been fired after invoking the Fifth Amendment and refusing to answer congressional questions over granting favors to certain organizations in federal grants. It is yet another scandal in the Bush Administration that shows how deep the damage has been at the Justice Department. She is accused of cutting corners for faith-based organizations. This is not good news for Regents University, the religious based law school that has been a favorite hiring ground for the Bush Justice Department. DeKonty is a graduate of Regents University and has been compared to that other infamous Regent grad, Monica Goodling.

DeKonty’s favors for faith-based organization were criticized in a letter from Beth McGarry, the deputy assistant attorney general for operations and management at the Office of Justice Programs to Robert Flores, the head of the office: “I am very disturbed that Michele advised you to disregard all the rules (that were posted on your website) and permit every late applicant an opportunity to submit an application.”

Notably, DeKonty actions were defended by Flores after McGarry called them “indefensible.” Flores said that helping faith-based groups was due to “their participation is a Presidential priority.”

McGarry correctly responded that “It is critical for the integrity of the competitive process that all applicants are treated the same and that we do not bend the rules for a category of applicants, such as faith based organizations.”

Flores, however, continued to defend waiving deadlines as a way to “avoid disaster.” They are accused of assisting World Golf Foundation’s First Tee initiative, “whose honorary chairman is former president George H.W. Bush, and an abstinence program promoted by Best Buddies, led by Elaine Bennett, spouse of Reagan administration cabinet official Bill Bennett.”
