I'm writing a memoir. I graduated from the UW in Creative Writing in 1971. Yes, I'm aged challenged. What's going on with you two?

Re: Hi writers
Mon, June 26, 2006 - 4:46 PMI'm about to start writing my thesis for grad school... I plan to write it on my Dad's life story. I'm excited to get started but at the same time nervous! Any advice?
Can you share more about the memoir you are working on? -

Re: Hi writers
Mon, July 3, 2006 - 9:08 PMZeena & Ayshah...congrats on your writing projects. I considered writing my own memoir a few years ago but the subject will still too raw (my experience in a born-again cult). So, instead I'm writing a novel and play (and probably a screenplay) about self-destruction and redemption.
Ayshah...my advice about writing...create an outline about what you plan to write. I never believed in outlines, but they work so well. I created a 6-7 page outline that described my characters and that described what would happen in each chapter of my novel. It's simply a roadmap to guide me. The novel is constantly evolving...new characters appear, while others are dropped...new story arcs are explored. But having the outline to guide me works so incredibly well. I know where I'm going and I set goals to get there. I'd suggest doing the same. Right now, I have 9 chapters done, or 27,000 words. I set a goal of writing 2 chapters per month. I keep a running log of how may pages I've written and how many words I've written. That encourages me and gives me the boost to write more.
I'm about to start chapter 10 on the fourth of July. My goal is to be done with the novel by February and already have plans for a sequel and another novel involving new characters. Like I said, I want to turn the novel into a screenplay, too. I think I may need to clone myself!! -

Re: Hi writers
Wed, July 5, 2006 - 9:06 PMThank you for this advice! I have been thinking about making an outline for my thesis even though I'm not an outline person. I think I should... I find your advice very helpful. Thank you again.
The born again cult issue hits close to home. We have a family member who from time to time when we have to deal with them (not every day thank God) drives us crazy! I do think the whole born again thing is a cult and when you are ready to write about it I have no doubt it will be educational and hopefully help others.
Best,
A

Mon, July 31, 2006 - 6:01 AMI'm in the process of writing two books. One is revolving around my renaissance persona, Aine. It is three years in the making at this point. The other is mostly for fun...a vampire novel. -
