Bamboo Trellis

This is a bamboo trellis I made winter 2006. It is held together with bamboo pegs, no lashing or anything else. It is approximately a 10' cube. I didn't put any finish on it, so it is already starting to split and break down. It was mainly an experiment to see if pegs would hold it together. I put 2" inside diameter pvc pipe in 1 foot the ground with cement, and placed the uprights in that. I made it out of green bamboo, took about 2 days to harvest, cut and construct.

hi there, how do you mean "held together with bamboo pegs"? Have you just split a small piece of bamboo to 'peg' things together?

Yes, the pegs are slightly tapered to fit in holes drilled through where two pieces cross each other. Then gently tapped in till they get stuck. If you look closely at the joints you can see them. We've had some pretty high winds and so far it has held together, one or too joints have come loose but I just stick the pegs back in. Some waterproof glue would probably help, but I wanted to be able to take it down and replace parts, since I didn't put any finish on them. I made the pegs from the bottom parts of clums, which are pretty thick. I guess I could also drill small holes though the narrow end of the peg and insert a smaller peg or nail in it, which would hold it better, but once I saw it would hold by itself I didn't bother.
