Lesson 1) Cupcakes
As one scholar puts it, Greek pemmatology (the study of sacrificial cakes) is a 'funny business.'
It seems as though cakes with one or more 'knobs', icings/decorative scenes, were used in the mythic
cults of Demeter, Dionysus, and many other chthonic (earth-born) divinities. The Greek 'poluomphala popana'
'many-knobbled cakes' are often placed in mystic baskets. It is sometimes attested that eating the cakes makes "birdlike."

Lesson 2: Boreders
Sun, March 11, 2007 - 12:06 AM". . . They give out innumerable many-knobbled cakes, because the souls too are innumerable. . . "
At the borders of these many souls are the boarders. In Greek, A-poria means Im-pass, Impediment, or Border
(from Poros, Way, and -A, no way). At the Aporias, the ancient professionals of fun or divine technicians
(oi peri theous technitai) gave "prayers and offerings (euchai kai thusiai) to honey the souls,
the enchanting songs of the magi are able to free the daimones (the guardian spirits of each soul)
when they impede. Impeding daimones are returning souls. This is why the magi perform the sacrifice
as if they were doing justice to the place. On the offerings they pour water and milk (gala),
from which they make libations too. They give out innumerable many-knobbled cakes. . . etc. . . .etc. . . "

3: The Divine Cradle (Liknon)
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 3:12 PMAt the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore were discovered numerous likna (cradles or winnowing baskets) filled with cupcakes in honour of the agricultural gift of cereals. Dionysos was called Liknites meaning "He of the Liknon." The liknon is often depicted as filled with cereals and fruits among which a phallus rises covered in fabrick. It is related that maenads (faeries of tututopia), in their role as ivy-wreathed liknon bearers (liknophoros), revel in and reveal its contents during the peak of initiation rites. As one scholar puts it, the phallus, perhaps similar to the unicorn horn in funginearing, reflects the source of life, a "a symbol of earthly pleasure and salvation (soterias). By looking at it, touching it, and meditating on it, the epophants are transported into the mystery of Liber (liberty)." At the hieros gamos (holy marriage), the boy, or neophyte, is said to carry thistles with acorns and a liknon filled with bread, and to say "I have escaped the sad fate, and found the happy one." In other depictions, the mask of the god is placed in a liknon full of gold, surrounded by clusters of grapes. "The one who carries this (kernos), just as the one who carries the liknon, tastes of them." As guardian of gardens, the image of Priapus (son of Dionysus and Aphrodite) was set up as a herm to protect and communicate the life breath of the first fruits. By the Hellenistic age, the Underworld grotto had become thoroughly interpreted as an "aerial space" in which souls become heavenly through purification by winds of joy. Children in the liknon are thus said to grow as plants do when they are awakened by spring, much like funginears. -

4: The Cave of Honey (Antron Meliston)
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 3:28 PM“There is an ancient cave of bees. . . where at certain times of each year a great fiery glow is seen emerging. This occurs when the milky medium nourishing the growing child runs over. The cave is inhabited by sacred bees, the nurses of infants.” These honey bees, as swarms that distill the invisible sweetness, are the wetnurses who make an intoxicating beverage from the overflow (ekhein) of mortal life, giving mead. The myth goes to relate that four foolhardy stragglers tried to steal the honey of the bees, and so put on clunky armor, and scooped up some of the honey, whereupon, they saw lying in the cave “the swaddling cloths of the infant Zeus.” Thereupon, their armor cracked and fell plumb off into the Antron Meliston (the cave of sweetness, 'anterior' to all armor), whereupon they melted, leaving the stragglers naked and running from the bees. These swaddling bands were later kept safe in the liknon or treasure chest (tickle trunk), and appeared in other myths as rich fabricks, rife with ruffles, colors, knots, and bows. Or as narrow bands, broaches, and little pins (tainenai), used to adorn magic person at festivals like the Anthesterion so they might be recognized through these symbolons (little tokens) as near of kin. Just like KLC's little pins. -
