So, what do you like about reggae?

For starters, I really like the older stuff. Much of the earlier music was recorded under less than ideal conditions, and I love the raw truthful sound of it. It feels more "from the heart" than polished studio cuts do, yet doesn't have the distraction of an audience.

I also like songs with an intense and relevant message. "Oooh, I love/miss you baby" may sound nice with a catchy tune, but "emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds" or "until that day the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship, rule of international morality, will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued, but never attained" really catches my attention, and makes me think. I like music that opens my eyes.

This is true for all music I listen to, but reggae especially lends itself to these qualifications.
