When you get there ...

There are police and BLM near the gate. Do not think you can start your party at the gate. No open containers, no fatties, no hanging off the roof. Yes, you're excited. Yes, the atmosphere is electric. But you're not there yet, you have to go park that thing in the city before you have that first drink. Don't make it easy for the LEOs to have a reason.

Yes............this is VERY important. LOTS of people were busted for open containers on the gate road. Get in and park before you party. There is plenty of time. Don't think that just cause you are waiting in line you can start drinking.

I will be sitting in the parking lot - after waiting in the Will Call line - until then as well.

and when I say "get in" I mean get to your camp. Don't drink while you are standing in the will call line, then go get in your car to drive through the gate. You could be very sorry.

I can't stress how important this is. Last year cops would pull people over for an open beer, or a busted brake light, expired tags, etc. Then they would bring the dogs out and claim the dog smelt something. That was their excuse to search the car. It was like shooting fish in a barrel.

Use your head. Open container laws also apply on the playa! Drinks can't be withing arms reach of the driver. The speed limit is 5 mph. People did get cited for speeding on scooters, etc. Burningman man feel like another planet but it's still the US and ALL federal, state and local laws apply.

If a ranger is riding next to your art car, give em a few moments. You may have a broken taillight, or headlight, or your tags may be obscured. Or you may kicking up too much dust which kinda looks like the car is going faster than 5mph.

Or we may really want to check out the awesome vehicle you brought out there.

in all seriousness, it's better that one of us (Rangers) stop and chat with you instead of Washoes Finest. And they will. Once they have you stopped for fill in the blank arguable 'infraction' the rest of the car and it's patrons can be searched.

There were a TON of law enforcement stops after cars got through greeters station in 2007 and 2008. Keep the beverage service closed until you are stopped at your destination.

Maybe a silly question, but do the powers that be care if we're biking with an open container of beer (within the city, not before entering the gate)?

What do you recommend when we've got a RV packed with ticket-holders and one person who needs to pick up will-call? Should they bike on over and wait in the will-call line once its within sight? Have the whole RV go over to will-call?

This was a disaster for me last year! As I had a will call ticket and my party did not. A couple of overwhelmed and grumpy rangers ended up parking us into a parking lot behind rows of other cars - saying we had to "wait our turn" - although the way we were parked in behind rows of still-arriving cars, we ended up being the first people into this spot but the LAST people out (much, much later).

This year I'm will call again, but I'm planning to get out and start walking towards will call as soon as we round the bend... And then wait for the car to catch up with me near the gate. Any suggestions on whether or not this will work? Or a better idea?

So, what you do is get out of the car, have the ticket holders continue driving, and book it to the will call desk. Trafic will likely be very slow, so by the time you get your ticket, your friends will be coming up behind you. Keep an eye on your ride so you know where they are at.

    DON'T GET WILL CALL TICKETS!!!!

My scenario played out like thus:
    1. When Will Call booth and front gate were in sight, the boyfriend jumped out of the RV to retrieve his will-call ticket. Around 4pm
    2. The remainder of our RV rolls along and gets checked in. Around 4:40pm
    3. We're still waiting for the boyfriend, can't really see the Will Call booth due to dust-storming, so we pull around and go wait in the Will Call waiting lot.
    4. There, we are told that the RV will have to re-enter the regular waiting line in order to get back into the actual entrance to BRC. Around 5:30pm
    5. So, the RV goes and re-enters the line, I go wander to the Will Call booth to lend moral support to the waiting boyfriend, even though my ticket has already been ripped. Around 6:00pm.
    6. Boyfriend finally acquires ticket after 2.5+ hour wait in the dust at the booth. We realize that our RV and friends are nowhere to be easily found, so we begin to walk to the entrance. Get stopped by rangers and we're told we MUST ride into BRC. They kindly find us an RV to hop onto for the short ride, and after some minor arguments about why I have a ripped ticket and the bf does not, we're on our way in! About 6:40pm
    7. Do the de-virgining thing, ring the bell, get playa-fied... get dropped off in center camp by our RV. Sigh, and begin the supply-less walk to 3:00 and A to our campsite. About 7:15pm
    8. We finally arrive at our campsite after 8pm... our RV had only arrived 20 minutes before we did since they had to re-enter the main line to get in. There wasn't much sunlight left, so we skip the idea of setting up camp and instead ride around in an art car all night.

If we didn't have one person in our group with will-call, we would've gotten to camp before 5pm... instead of after 8pm!

Please keep this in mind! <3
    Yours in dust,
    Erin

Very similar thing happened to us my first year and, since then, I won't take any riders with will-call tickets.

Wow, we must have got VERY lucky. Our one person in 8 who had a will call ticket went and got his while we pulled over to wait for him. I'm sure it took less than 30 minutes. then he got back and we proceeded. We also arrived at a time when there were very few people in line, so I"m sure that helped greatly.

Lucky indeed!! The will call line seemed to be disproportionately long as compared to the wait for our RV to get checked out. Will-call was packed left-to-right under the shade structure, with 30-40 people waiting beyond it in the sun. Damn you, Monday afternoon!

My van of four had 2 with will calls. Got to WC around 3am, friends got tix easily and we were back in line. Got to gate and they waved us all the way through without taking our tix or checking us. I think it was a mis-communication between gate people.
