are your parents military? i lived in fayetteville for twelve years...went to college there. my husband is a retired officer. but i grew up in wilmington, on the coast.

my family doesn't like vodou either...but i have never let anything stop me from being me ( and that aint always good,lol! )
but, here is a good arguing point if you ever need one: when people start giving me grief about vodou, i start rattling off these facts...it SHAMES them and gives me a platform to counter-attack...

haiti is the worlds first black republic
haiti won its freedom from slavery...in a really horrible,bloody war
haiti suffered from racism and fear afterwards...americans did not want anything to do with haiti afterwards,for fear they would inspire american blacks to revolt.
it was a country of slaves...they really needed help and still do.
and this trend continued...and that is how vodou and haiti got this really maligned,racially motivated hatred, hyped up by hollywood and the christian right.
america still hates haiti...take a look at the haitian refugees

the african slaves in the states were brutally beaten,whipped and killed for practicing traditional african faith

haiti retained theirs because they threw off the chains and kept as much of their african culture as they could

THEN ASK, are you going to perpetuate the lies and racism by hating a religion, one of the oldest in the world, that helped a nation be free?

this usually backs the most virulent opposer down, because no one wants to publically named a racist!
