Just last night I read about a set of Canadian (!) quintuplets who were seized by the government and put in a kind of zoo! Their parents had to really fight to get them back, but eventually they were successful.
I thought the octuplets episode was a little bland (though the gorilla mama was unforgettable)- it's a bit more interesting to think it really happened somewhere.
It seems like there have been other plots/characters that just seemed random, until later when I learned that they were based on something from real life- anyone else?

Thu, September 22, 2005 - 9:35 AMI wondered whether the Flaming Moe episode had any roots...
and found the opposite!
As Ani DiFranco says, "Art may imitate life, but life imitates TV."

Re: weird plots based on reality
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 2:48 PMFunny part about the public reaction. Absinthe was also banned under similar circumstances. One peron, who had many other problems, drank it daily at the local bar. One night he went home and, if rumor is true, killed his wife. The public blamed the absinthe, and presto! Banned.

Re: weird plots based on reality
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 5:30 PMI'm from Portland and a lot of the early episodes were based off of local politics and a lot of Springfield is based off Portland, like the episode where Lisa runs off to the art museum - the museum is a cartoon version of the Portland Art museum. The names of characters are Portland streets like Terwilliger curves (from Portland to Beaverton highway) is Silent Bob's last name, Lovejoy is a street and so is Flanders. -

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 6:54 PMThat's Sideshow Bob, I believe.
I heard that Dolph, Kearny and whatsits were local streets, too. -

Re: weird plots based on reality
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:05 AMI like it, silent sideshow bob... voiced by Kevin Smith. With poofy hair, a trenchcoat and a baseball cap perched on top.
Or Kelsey Grammar standing outside the convenience store in a full color remake of Clerks. -
