Well the Netherlands have actually 2 Santa Clauses. One who celebtrates 5 december his birthday and the other who celebrates it at 25 december. The one on 5 is called Sinterklaas ( see Hungary ) the one on 25 is indeed called kerstman. Which stands for Christmasman.

Santa Lucia on Dec 13 th the Festival of Lights ..
young girls wearing a crown of Lights in the early hours

I always loved it ... thank you Leelen

            BTW an interesting note
has anyone noticed Italy doesn't have a Santa or Nikolaus ..
well they celebrate St Martin on the 11 -11
and on the 6th of January (the Epiphany or..... the 3 Wise Kings day )
an old wise woman flying on a broomstick with a huge bundle on her back delivers the gifts for the children ..
her name is 'la Befana ' quite ironic that in the country where the Vatican 'rules '
it is a old woman flying on a broomstick the kids heroine .. so very 'Pagan ' lol
I love it .. ah ..... if you were not a good kid she would still give you something : charcoal
but it is a sweet candy that just looks like it ... ;-)

Caroline Casey in her book "Making the Gods Work For You" explores the universality of the santa archetype through many different cultures. Her brilliant anthropological work reveals a common thread through Eurasia of this archetype.

Santa in Russian pagan culture is called Baba Ganoush. Santa in Indian culture is thus worshipped as Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, whom I share names with.

Another ethnographer points out the many connections between Oedipus and Ganesh. In the tragic greek vision of the universe overruled by Ananke, chaos or necessity, the generous giver of gifts is cursed and blinded and driven away to die far from his home city. In the triumphant indian version, the baby Ganesh has his head lopped off, but it is magically replaced with an elephants head and he is transformed into the intercessor of the gods.
