Does anyone here watch the BBC productions Dr Who or its spin off Torchwood?
Do they get shown in the US of A?

Anyway, Torchwood is a British Government Organisation set up by Queen Victoria to protect her Empire from aliens and such like. Though the series is set in the present day there have been plenty of flash backs to by gone ages. Yep Victorian's with alien technology.

I lliked the series a lot but loved the episodes where the past was shown.

And I could have sworn that Torchwood (move the letters of Doctor Who around) was a project from Queen V, to cover up the fact that she was bitten by a werewolf. And couldn't enter a room where the walls were paneled in WolfBane.

I don't know how or when BBC America is showing this series. I saw a couple episodes while on vacation in London.

Dr Who has been running forever in the UK. It started in the early 60's until the late 80's when it was cancelled. It was recently revived and it is absolutely brilliant. Very British. It is by turns scary, funny and sad. A good sci-fi program to be watched by all.

Torchwood is a spin off. Yes Torchwood is an anagram Of Doctor Who. The tag line goes something like 'outside the government above the law'.

I would suggest everyone seeks it out. They are both in their own ways very steampunk. Perhaps not traditionally so but very much in the spirit of the genre.

The werewolf never bit Queen Victoria. If it had, the Doctor would have been back to do something about it. If you watch the scene closely, the Werewolf never gets close enough to bite her.

Also it was mistletoe that the werewolf couldn't get near, not wolfsbane.

The Torchwood Institute was started by Queen Victoria to deal with extraterrestrial threats to the Empire. The Werewolf was really an alien after all. The Torchwood Institute grew until it was a large organization with a secret headquarters hidden in Canary Wharf. Then the Cybermen and the Daleks destroyed Torchwood London. Torchwood the TV series deals with events around Torchwood Cardiff.

I loved that series, in the NYC metro area I had a childhood, teens, and young adulthood of many BBC series on tv with Dr Who and other sci fi such as Blake's 7, and the comedic "Red Dwarf"

And yes, I've seen some of the more recent Dr Who lately, thanks to my local library having some DVD's

Never got to see any Torchwood series though, sounds interesting.

Torchwood is also available via Netflix.

And I think the first three seasons of the new Doctor Who are not only available via Netflix, but are Play Instantly, so you can overdose yourself, should you feel the urge.

The new age of Doctor Who has brought in some interesting design.

The cybermen have gone art nouveau
The daleks have given up been blue and red and instead have chosen a gloomy, sinister bronze colour.

Oh please seek out the episode called "The new Doctor" it was last year's Christmas special

I think you mean "The next Doctor." I do not think that has been shown on Sc-Fi yet. That was the 2008 Christmas special. From a design standpoint, this is well worth seeking out. Everyone in this tribe should make an effort to find a way to view it.

"Christmas Invasion" Was the first of the Christmas pantos, that introduced David Tenant as the Doctor. I think that was the 2004 special, Much has happened since then ...

There has only been one, "special" so far in 2009 "Planet of the Dead." The pre-credit opening sequence is one of the best. Expect a "new doctor." in 2010. There should be some more "specials" at the end of the year.

Torchwood is also in the "special" event mode this year. Might be in June, Might not. Torchwood is not an easy thing to pin down.

If you haven't seen Torchwood or Dr. Who, I highly recommend the both of them - they're wonderful and I love how the Cybermen look a little Steampunk. A fun series!

    EXTERMINKNIT!!! EXTERMINKNIT!!! XD

(Grew up watching Doctor Who & am really excited it's back. Currently seen up through Series 3 of the Doctor & Series 1 of Torchwood)

Oh, and for those that are interested, you can order the Master's FOB watch through play.com. And unlike the versions I've seen in the states, this is a working metal replica, not a cheap plastic toy.

You've only seen up to series three!!!!
Oh lucky you. You have the joy of Donna Noble's adventures. These include the returnof the Ood, the horrors of a SATNAV, libraries, some old villians, new monsters and a series climax that is so sad that I didn't really take it on board the first time I watched it. Only when it was shown again did I see the tragedy.

Oh Captain jack is back as well, all smile and sex.

I love Doctor Who and Torchwood - they're both incredibly inspirational for steamy clothes that mesh well into daily life. I mean, I love steampunk but it's not always practical to what I'm doing. These shows give a good crossover.

Frankly, I'm not all that thrilled with the choice of the next Doctor, I'm going to have to wait and see of course but yeah... he looks a little too punkish (in a Toys Dolls sort of way, not in a steamy sort of way) *sigh* we'll see.

It's strange. People are never happy with the new doctor or a new assistant. There was up roar when Billie Piper left and again when Catherine Tate joined. Just give the actor a chance. You just have to trust to the production team to have selected a good actor and to the writers to keep coming up with good scripts.

I know when David Tennant first showed up, my thought was, "Who the F is this new flopsy-haired guy? **scoff**" but then I ended up thinking he was the best doctor ever. So Nigel has a point. ^_^

I think Matt Smith deserves a chance. He was very good as Jim in the BBC film adaptations of Philip Pullman's "Ruby in the Smoke" and "Shadow in the North" - which also starred Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart. Folks on here might enjoy the series of novels, they are sort of penny dreadfuls, and Philip Pullman is such an excellent writer. The adaptations are very faithful. As for David Tennant, I already loved him from the BBC series of "Casanova" in which he played the younger versionof the eponymous hero (?), with Peter O'Toole as the elder relating his memoirs.
