Rose City Steampunks, Local 23

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rcsteam

This group was created with the intention of facilitating
communication within the Steampunk community in the Portland Metro
area.

In the past, we have relied on using Brass Goggles and Spare Goggles
for our communication about events and meetups. With the recent
problems at the Brass Goggles site, and not wishing to use up too much
bandwidth at the Spare Goggles site, we decided to create this group.

This is the place to post notices about upcoming events, meetups, and
to have general chat of interest to Portland area steampunks. Please
come in, take a look around, post your photo, add a link, put your
event on the calendar, and leave a message. We hope that this will
become a comfy spot on the Interweb for all!
Rule, Britannia!
Britannia rule the stars!

Don't miss PEERS' third venture into the world of Victorian Steampunk: Space 1889 - a Victorian Ball in Space. Program your Babbage Analytical Engines, sail the luminiferous ether between the worlds to this Nineteenth Century science fiction ball, and keep Venus British!

The year is an alternate 1889 in which, thanks to inventor Thomas Alva Edison, computer engineer Thomas Babbage, software developer Ada, Countess of Lovelace, visionary scientists Herbert George Wells and Jules Verne, and many other distinguished men and women of science and engineering, the Victorians have air and space travel, high technology, computers (analytical engines), calculators (difference engines), efficient software (the versatile and elegant ADA), and even email (“electric messaging”). The Great Game has extended to Outer Space with Great Britain, Germany, Russia and those intrepid Americans rushing to colonize every planet in sight. Welcome to Space 1889. This is the milieu of our ball.

Join His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and His Excellency, the Governor of Her Majesty’s Crown Colony of Venus, for a formal ball to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of British rule on the planet. Diplomats, explorers, scientists and artists from Earth and from around the galaxy are cordially invited to attend.

Next time around, live music and fans for a cooler venue. I'll also pick a non-baseball evening so parking isn't a problem.

I'm a fourth-year university student working on my thesis for my B.A.A. in Mass Communications and Journalism. Steampunk is my chosen topic because it's a new area of curiosity and interest, a diversion from my other geeky pursuits of anime/manga/sci-fi and fantasy.

I'm relatively new to the world of steampunk - in layman's terms, I'm completely green around the ears - and would like some help finding material (books, movies, magazines, news articles, academic or otherwise) for research. If anyone is interested in being interviewed, even better.

The Department of Mutant Vehicles is also reviewing for side and trailer connection illumination.

Not everyone wants to comply with those requirements with el-wire, rope light or blinky lights, but the safety requirements must be achieved in order for the DMV hotties to license you for night operation .
I'll offer up indirect ground illumination under the vehicle as one method of low level lighting. Any other ideas?

Greetings,

Thanks to everyone (audience and participants alike) for their support and enthusiasm last year, which made our inaugural year of La Legion Fantastique a hit at the 2007 Dickens Christmas Fair. Now the clock is ticking, and we must begin the process of creating an even bigger and better show!

Our returning cast has already begun holding monthly rehearsals...and we are now scheduling auditions for the many shows and characters that inhabit La Legion Fantastique.!

We are looking for dedicated, friendly, and talents actors and artists to join us in our quest to faithfully bring the worlds of Jules Verne to vibrant life! If you would like to take on the challenge of being bigger than life Victorian-age science fiction characters in a fully immersive theatrical environment ... we want to meet you!

Not only are we looking for environmental actors (characters from Verne's books), but we are also looking for someone to play the coveted role of Mr. Jules Verne himself! We are also looking for 3 actors for the Legion Fantastique children's show - "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". This is a high-energy, physical, audience participation show that will be performed daily...so we need actors who are outgoing, can project vocally, and won't mind multiple weeknight rehearsals in October-November.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO AUDITION - Please send an email to: legionfantastique@gmail.com (with something particularly Jules Verne related...just to see that you're paying attention) to schedule an audition time and to receive our list of characters we are looking to cast. If you could please send a recent photo of yourself as well, that would help. The following dates are currently planned for auditions:

JULY 30
AUGUST 27
SEPTEMBER 24
OCTOBER 22
NOVEMBER 5

PLEASE NOTE: We have limited space this year, and we will be unable to cast everyone who auditions...so please be aware that an audition is not a guarantee for a role.

We hope to see you there!

The Clockwork Dolls:
hello all,I saw this posting on a Steampunk group on Flickr. Thought I pass
it on to all those looking for another opportunity to wear those SP costumes!
Kij

<I'm producing an event in September in Northern Ca. Very steampunk in a
orientation. I'd like to encourage anyone who want to attend, please do.

Attendance is free. If you'd like to participate in any way, just let me know.
Please take a look a the website as well.

the event is going to be a kinetic, rail-bound, sculpture race and so much
more. We have negotiated with the city of Santa Rosa, Ca., to close down a
number of streets and we will be using the Railroad Square Depot parking lot and
railroad tracks for our main event. There will be an array of bicycle based
contraptions.

There will be food booths, amazing craft venders, all day music, random
circus acts, large art installations and sideshow performances as well.

If you havn't seen it, go buy the DVD set (there was only 14 episodes so you get the whole story) and then Serenity the movie is basically the season finale. Brilliant story, great characters, and perfect western/sci-fi intergration!!! even if you don't like either of those genres, this series will blow you out of the water!

------------------------------------
Steampunk Costuming:
------------------------------------
Steampunk is fun because it is not any particular time... it is "out of time" or mixed time periods...
ie: technology housed in a Victorian case

There are several popular costume sub genres; But it is all in the accessories!
Gentleman Explorer (think Indiana Jones), Inventor (HG Wells Time machine), aviator/airship, Wild, wild, West, Goth/Victorian, WWI, Warrior/Soldier, Cyberpunk
I think there are also possibilities for ethnic wear here: perhaps Russian, East Indian, Morrocan

Of course it is always best to come up with a persona first and build your costume around that.
Who are you? What is your job/hobby? Are you on a quest? What are your politics?

Here are some inspiring sites:

ascots, stick pins, cameos and tank hats!

Is it a political or artistic movement? Is it a lifestyle, a hobby or can the universe go on with knowing that it can be both? Is it essential to be a DIYer or can one sit aside and simply take in the birthing process? How much further do you think it has to go? Do you sketch, blueprint, plan or create? Am I overthinking this? ;)

I ask because I am relatively new (compared to many of you, I'm sure) to the steampunk genre and am truly interested in others' viewpoints. I'm a dancer and endless conversations are made solely from discussing ones' beginning in dance and this is one of the few forums that (at least from what I've found, sorry, I abuse parenthesis') steampunk can really be discussed among people of different backgrounds so I'm curious to see what everyone else's experiences have been. Where/when did you fully realize this genre and what does it mean to you, if anything?

my roommates and I will be putting on a time travelly night of music. It started out being pure steampunk, but with a few bands pulling out or not telling us they'd be in Japan that night, it's changed to a more rogue music night.

The event is called Swamp Gas
we'll be having goth pop, bluegrass, and amazing burlesque.

we're inviting folks to come in their finest steampunk, or edwardian, or raygun gothic, or what ever time period they find themselves in.
... Heck anything social were we can meet people of similar mindsets would be fun in my opinion I'm just horrible at organizing such things.

Hey There,

La Legion Fantastique is looking for volunteers to helps us create a unique, and exciting attraction at Dickens Fair 2007! LF will be a high-profile display of the work of many talented souls!

LF is looking for people who sew, paint, draw, make graphics on their computer, etc... Because we are now in the phase of making "artifacts" for the Legion headquarters. We are starting now, because there is a lot to do!

If you would like to help us build props, costumes, etc...Wonderful! Please feel free to tribe message me and let me know what you'd be interested in doing.

If you would like to help out, but can only devote a little bit of time to making something....That's cool too! - please take a look at the following list and see if there is something that catches your eye! If 20 people pitched in by making one item each, the walls of LF would be full!

Here is the following wish list of "artifacts" for La Legion Fantastique. I have listed and properly labeled certain items as "in production":

THEME: "Around the World in 80 Days"

We are hoping to populate a portion of LF with a bric-a-brac shelf that runs a portion of the environment. On that shelf would be a collection of various items that Phileas Fogg has accumulated from his trip around the world in 80 days. We are looking for anything from exotic hats, sculptures, vintage posters (bullfights...paris...etc), masks, puppets...etc. We are also looking for a large scale model train that we can have running around amongst these artifacts.

I will be posting a sketch of the interior soon, so the look of what we're trying to do can be seen.

If you have any questions...ideas...comments, please feel free to tribe message me.

Thank you all for your generous support!
