I have a belt that I took a part and saved only 2 pieces -- looks steampunk. There's a hole at the top and bottom and I want to use these parts to make a steampunk looking garter belt one for each leg in the front... not sure how though - ideas?

steampunk music?

so

I was thinking about music that made me conjure images of "steampunk" and the best thing I could come up with was NIN "closer" because of the train sounding beat with the piano was giving me a contrast of new/old world feel to it. I make techno and I was thinking of samples to integrate. So far I'm thinking hitting pipes, steam whistles, trains, piano and harpsicord melodies, probably with some punk sounding guitar riffs.

Any of you have sounds/bands that instantly conjure up the steampunk feel?

Steampunks are invading the "Antique Autos in History Park" event!

Antique Autos in History Park
Sunday Sept 13, 2009
Noon till 5:00pm
1600 Senter Rd San Jose, CA 95112
Cost: FREE!

We're using this event to get our Steampunk gear on, gather together and enjoy a day in the park. We'll be taking a break to enjoy a potluck picnic lunch at around 2:00ish. Bring your picnic gear, something to share and a beverage (alcohol is not allowed in the park) and we'll gather on the lawn of the Hill House (the Hill House is located directly across from the Fire House). There MAY be picnic tables available, but plan to either bring your own chair, or sit upon the grass... we're steamPUNKS so grass won't hurt us ey?

History park is a fabulous place for photos, so bring your cameras.

There's a fantastic Trolly barn chock full of steam powered cars & engines, O'Brien's Sweet shop, and plenty of house museums to browse... oh, and the park will be full of antique cars!

Hope to see everyone there!

In steam we Trust,

~Miranda~

I'm developing a character that is a pirate captain/madam of a bordello going through a period of half-mourning and I'd like to know more about the clothing and jewelry set aside for the half-mourning, plus any examples. (I'm very fond of style from mid-1870's to 1890's)

It's the late 1800's. You have access to whatever technology you can dream up. You are part of a traveling band of balkan-gypsy-steam punk performers, including the loveliest bearded lady in the world, dazzling magicians and jugglers, and strange and beautiful dancers from far-off lands.

Want to join? The Mile High Riot is holding auditions, and we are looking for a few more "Rioters"!

Calling all actors, dancers (Burlesque, Belly, Ballet and Modern), contortionists, jugglers, knife throwers, acrobats, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, magicians, stilt walkers, object manipulators, poi spinners (no fire please) and sideshow spectacles -- if you have a talent and a desire to perform, we want to see it! If this project sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to audition.

The show will be Oct. 29-31, Halloween weekend 2009.

Even if you don't want to be in the show, we are encouraging attendees to dress up in thier finest attire.

Auditions will be held June 28th, please contact us for location info.
1) Prepare a 3-5 minute performance piece appropriate to the show theme.
2) Come in appropriate costume attire. This does not have to be your final piece or costume. We want to know that you have access to the costuming quality we desire. Appropriate attire for this show draws influence from Steampunk ideals, Vaudeville and circus shows, and Balkan and neo-balkan attire.
3) A performance CV/resume is desirable, but not required.

Not a performer but want to be involved? We are looking for people who can dive in and help add to the overall atmosphere of our show. If you're at all curious or interested, please send us some information about yourself and what you do, and let us know how you'd like to be involved. There will also be vending opportunities, contact us for more details.

For details visit: www.bastetfusion.com/MileHighRiot.html

I know I'm not the only one, but it seems that way sometimes! I've been thinking of seeing what I can do to get the steam train rolling more on this side of the country. Anyone wanna help me set up an Edwardian Ball? Help me build a Thunderdome?? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?...

What is Steampunk?

How would you describe Steampunk to someone like me who always seems to find out about things right as they are loosing their oomph. I thank god for that fact when it came to teletubies and Beanie babies but sometimes left wondering about some things that I really could get interested in.

I'm a noob and I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm into so many other things that probably relate enough to steampunk that it seems like a step in right direction to follow my intrigue and interests.

BTW: I'm a seamstress and jewelry designer so I'm always trying to keep abreast of the wicked trends.

Does anyone here watch the BBC productions Dr Who or its spin off Torchwood?
Do they get shown in the US of A?

Anyway, Torchwood is a British Government Organisation set up by Queen Victoria to protect her Empire from aliens and such like. Though the series is set in the present day there have been plenty of flash backs to by gone ages. Yep Victorian's with alien technology.

I lliked the series a lot but loved the episodes where the past was shown.

What Is Steampunk To You?

Okay, so I think we're all in general agreement as to the definition of this subculture but what does it really mean to you? Is it a political or artistic movement? Is it a lifestyle, a hobby or can the universe go on with knowing that it can be both? Is it essential to be a DIYer or can one sit aside and simply take in the birthing process? How much further do you think it has to go? Do you sketch, blueprint, plan or create? Am I overthinking this? ;)

I ask because I am relatively new (compared to many of you, I'm sure) to the steampunk genre and am truly interested in others' viewpoints. I'm a dancer and endless conversations are made solely from discussing ones' beginning in dance and this is one of the few forums that (at least from what I've found, sorry, I abuse parenthesis') steampunk can really be discussed among people of different backgrounds so I'm curious to see what everyone else's experiences have been. Where/when did you fully realize this genre and what does it mean to you, if anything?

I'm thinking that since it can run on steam (compressed air for the Faire) that I should do something steampunky for the descriptive flyer.
What makes Steampunk steampunk?

I'm searching for inspiration for my own steampunk outfit. But everywhere I look I'm thinking: But why is that steampunk and not just victorian?
I mean: come on! Steampunk can't be just a brown, beige tints victorian outfit but with goggles?

So what's your opinion on this?

Hi everyone,
I am an aspiring author and I have an idea for a book or a series of short stories. I am at that awful stage in the whole creative process. That is to say, I have some images in my head, a few ideas fermenting in the creative juices but I need to put some flesh on them.

Why do I need your help?

Well....... I want to write a sci-fi novel. The big idea is the adventures of an officer in the British Empires Colonial Space Marines. Or more simply the Victorians in Space.

I guess that falls into the catogury of steampunk. So any ideas about how spaceships are/were built. Attitudes. or books I should read would be greatfully received.

"Mystery surrounds a 50-year-old parcel being dropped through the door of the White Rabbit pub in Maidstone, which used to be an officers' mess, addressed to a serviceman. The Royal Mail didn't deliver it, so who did?"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8027347.stm

Who else would deliver a package to the correct address, but 50 years out of date?

Come on, Mr. Wells! Calibrate that Time Machine a little better! 50 years may not be much in the Life of the Planet, but it is quite a bit for Human-kind!

Is this steam punk?

You know, we did this compilation based on a lot of the values that steam punkers seem to aspire to. Although I'm actually relatively new to the concept of steam punk I feel it's a culture that I've been into for years. And this "vaudeville" comp to me is exactly what the ethos of steam punk is about. I don't know if you feel the same, but it feels more steam punk than some steam punk bands I've heard ... so maybe it would be worth having a look? Also, my new collective The Gaslight Troubadours is pretty much advocating the same thing here in the UK. So if anyone is interested here are some links ...

My belly dance troupe recently did a steampunk themed belly dance and afterwards, several people asked 'what is steampunk?'. honestly, i kind of had trouble describing it. especially being fairly new to steampunk myself. so i was wondering, how do you describe/explain it?

Shannon and I tried to cross the Sierras in Kristie's Flyer, it was a fun attempt but I don't think it likes veggie oil much. The feed pump froze
and was damaged at one of our camps, and made it so we could not add water to the boiler.

I am organizing the Steampunk Fashion Show being held on April 17th in DC at the Crucible at the event called 'Mischief' that Bronwen posted about earlier. We currently have a NY designer, Sefirah Fierce, and Delicious Boutique from Philly coming down to participate. I am looking to add some other designers. We are also looking for people who want to put together their own Steampunk outfits and model them. In addition, we are looking for some makeup artists and stylists to help out. Please let me know if you are interested in participating in any of these ways.

Cheers,
Tequila/Sean

Parkour is an art of movement in which you
train the body and mind to overcome obstacles. A parkour practitioner uses their
surroundings to improve their ability to move in space. By interacting with obstacles, be
they urban architecture or the natural environment, the practitioner becomes more
comfortable controlling his body and navigating any terrain. The application of parkour is
efficient traversal when circumstance necessitates it, such as being chased, or needing to
reach a destination. Being that parkour is made up of a lot of movements that are natural
to the human animal, the body is strengthened evenly and synergistically, meaning all the
parts of the body learn to work together. http://www.Primal-Fitness.com is DC’s home for parkour.

Good day unto all
As I am expanding my skills as a photographer I had a chance to do a steampunk / victorian shoot earlier this month. I am also hoping to do a tea party shoot later in month(s) as warmer weather comes. Please take a look and enjoy. These were taken at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh NC

This link was sent to me and I thought it was pretty well done. It is like those vintage paper doll cut outs where you dress up a character. But this one is a free computer game that has steampunk attire you can put on a character. Like slinky, it's fun for a girl or boy who likes to be a steampunk fashionista.

A friend sent me this link to a Japanese paper artist who has made a heart with gears. All out of folded paper. I know this isn't exactly steampunk, but the gear heart motif has been used often enough in steampunk that I thought people might be amused. Here's the link to the video on YouTube Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70dKZjP4NOo
It's in Japanese but see the video response for a subtitled version.
And here's the artist's web site, also in Japanese but there are pictures.

Looking to meet some people to interview about Steampunk for a school project

Hi, my name is Ajah & I'm a student at Las Positas College in Livermore. For my Anthropology class this semester I'm doing a study on the culture of steampunk and the people associated within the culture. I learned about steampunk from a burning man friend & have researched all over the internet to learn further about it. I'm amazed I had never heard of it before because it's absolutely amazing and fitting to me in many ways! Anyhow, for the project I need to be able to interview several people so I'm reaching out to see if there is anyone willing to meet me for coffee or such & give me an hour of their time to talk about steampunk. The interview would be focussed more on yourself, your views of the culture and such rather than a history of steampunk itself. I live in Oakland, but I am available all over the Bay Area & up to Sacramento area as well. I also have tickets to go to the Abney Park concert in San Francisco in a few weeks.

If anyone is willing to meet with me in the next few months (the completion date for the project is in May) for an hour or so in person, please contact me! I'm not very familiar with tribe network, I've barely used it, but I can be reached at e-mail: Ajah_Silva@yahoo.com if you are interested and willing to meet for an interview. I promise it will be painless & I'm even a fun & friendly person.

Thank you!

In an effort to come across more Steampunk music , I ran across this band, The Synthetic Dream Foundation, and absolutely fell in love with their mix of machinery rhythms and classical music. Beautiful and innovative. Check out their album "Behind the gates of horn and ivory" for sure!

The Edwardian Ball comes to Los Angeles for the first time

Disclaimer: I am no way affiliated with or paid by the Edwardian Ball or its component members in any way whatsoever...

THE EDWARDIAN BALL

A splendid San Francisco tradition flies south for the winter to the historic Tower Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, presenting an elegant, turn of the century celebration of music, theatre, dance, circus arts, DJs, ballroom dance, fashion, technology, and of course, the art and stories of Edward Gorey!!!

Featuring:

ROSIN COVEN (Creators of the Edwardian Ball)

Rosin Coven, your Edwardian Ball Hosts, dreamt up this spectacle long ago in a dust-covered martini bar in the middle of a bleak desert. They proudly continue the tradition of bringing a Gorey story to life each year in partnership with Vau de Vire Society. Eight musicians blend violin, two cellos, bass, guitar, harp, vibraphone, trombone, drums & lush vocal harmonies in a strangely beautiful mix of classical, jazz, chamber, purplego, klezmer, sultry lounge, theatrical cabaret, and cinematic dreams.

VAU DE VIRE SOCIETY

Spawned from the depths of San Francisco’s thriving Dance and Circus sub-cultures, the Vau de Vire Society has ravaged and titillated the live entertainment scene causing jaws to drop in awe and admiration around the Bay Area and beyond. This Avant-Cabaret community consists of classically-trained dancers, some of the nations most acclaimed acrobats, aerial artists, contortionists and circus side-show acts, an array of unique fire-performers, a handful of thespians and a barrage of the most enticing go-go’s. The group has been cross-pollinating genres by collaborating with an eclectic variety of world-renowned musicians and Dj’s in creating original stage shows and festival productions for the non- pretentious. Most notable collaborators include Cirque du Soleil, San Francisco Symphony, Peaches, the Alkaline Trio, The Dresden Dolls, Fishbone, Rosin Coven, Crystal Method and many other widely respected artists.

CIRQUE BEZERK

From the grey cement sprawl and the gritty train tracks of industrial Los Angeles emerges the color and glitter of Cirque Berzerk. Cirque Berzerk makes fantasy come to life. Performing individual acts, roaming characters and full theatrical productions they dance on the high wire of sensual wonderment. Spear-headed by husband and wife team Kevin Bourque & Suzanne Bernel, Cirque Berzerk is a tight-knit family of performers who have banded together to put our unique spin on the face of contemporary circus theatre. From stilt walkers to stunning aerialists to punk rock clowns, they work together as a cohesive unit to produce visions of sexy fiery burlesque, dramatic flight and vaudevillian tomfoolery.

And so much more, including...

HELIOS JIVE
DJ XIAN
Dark Garden

If your creating a mutant vehicle for Black Rock City on a steam punk theme, please keep in mind that one of the rules established by the BLM is that "all motorized vehicles will be equipped with adequate front and rear lighting during night hours". The Department of Mutant Vehicles is also reviewing for side and trailer connection illumination.
Not everyone wants to comply with those requirements with el-wire, rope light or blinky lights, but the safety requirements must be achieved in order for the DMV hotties to license you for night operation .

I'll offer up indirect ground illumination under the vehicle as one method of low level lighting. Any other ideas?

Musician S.J. Tucker is facing huge medical bills (http://community.livejournal.com/saveours00j/467.html) , and a lot of her friends and fans are helping her raise money for that.

There are a number of auctions and offers to that end, and some of them are steamy!! Check this out:

http://community.livejournal.com/saveours00j/11763.html

Cleothyla's wristwarmers are pretty steamy.

Five Auctions by Rosefox include a rare and out of print steampunk book.

Clockwork Egg is "steampunk goodness"

And SalonCon, which is a very steamy event, chose S00j as their
charity for 2009.

Might be other steam-worthy things there, too. Take a look!

Hey all, Gothla US - North America's largest Gothic Bellydance event, will be happening March 6th-8th, 2009 in Pomona, CA, and our theme for this year is Steampunk! We have room for just a few more vendors, and we would really like to have some artisans/merchants who specialize in steampunk accessories and attire. Check out the vending section of our website at http://www.gothla.us

Thanks! :)

For Steampunks in the SF Bay Area who like to partner dance!

For those of you who like to partner dance but don't necessarily like to do it to standard jazz music or the stuff everyone else listens to, fear not!

Come join us as *Swing Goth!* Every Tuesday night at Fat City on 11th Street in San Francisco.

We do partner dancing with a darker tinge: all-inclusive gothic and alternative musics, and we're always looking to welcome new faces. In our continuing endeavours to be more inclusive, we want to expand our aesthetic and repertoire to include steampunk in with our gothic.

And best of all? FREE open dancing!

Rotating lessons from 7-8pm, drop in lessons from 8-9, and FREE! dancing from 9-closing. You don't even need to bring a partner! We'll find one for you.

Every Tuesday at Fat City in San Francisco! And we're having a special Yule dance event on Dec. 30th! We'd love to see you there!

Swing Goth can also be found on Tribe: http://tribes.tribe.net/swinggoth

hi...an introduction

sorry, I put up my stilt listing (below) without introducing myself.

Hi, I'm Eli. I've lived in Santa Cruz for 17 years, and now I'm moving to Berlin next monday (!!!!!!!!).

I met some steampunkers recently who bought my vintage sewing machine, and I just dug them, dig? Dug. I'm a bit of a Luddite/tech-scrooge and yet am fascinated with the merging of ancient and future. I keep myself pretty up to date with technology, but I despise the greed and horrible design that accompanies it. I find creative fashion trends way more interesting than the latest fucking iPhone magic trick or Facebook Fairytale. And yet I feel strongly that technology can have elegance and art merged with it. Maybe I will do up my white iBook G4 with some rusty-esque pettina. Any suggestions on that?

Anyway, suffice it to say that although I'm not a full-bore steampunker (I don't ever seem to be a full-bore anything in terms of styles), I really do dig what it seems to be doing and the people who seem to be doing it. Hook me up with a SP event in Berlin if you know of any.

thanks.

(and buy my stilts. it'd be great to have them live on in such good company as yourselves.)

I'm new to this tribe and to the idea of SP as a social collective. I'm truly loving it. Any steamers here from the Emerald City? I've been toying with the idea of creating a series of sci-fi / fantasy events with SP being one of them. Any thoughts on local artists, musical groups, etc?

Can anyone recommend some Steampunk designers on the East Coast? I live in DC and would love to find some locally sourced stuff from the Washington/Baltimore area but am not sure if there are any and figure there most be some in NY and possibly Philly.

Steam Explorers' Day at Dickens Fair - NEW DATE!

F\I was given this missive from one of the Legionaires Fantastiques... please help them pass the word!

The Jules Verne theatrical troupe, La Legion Fantastique (http://mrphileasfogg.wordpress.com), was handing out flyers all Steampowered weekend promoting our Steam Explorers Costume Contest which will occur at this year's Dickens Christmas Fair (www.dickensfair.com).

The date on the flyers is INCORRECT. Due to scheduling conflicts, The Steam Explorers Costume contest will be held on December 13, NOT on December 6 as the flyer states.

Please help us spread the word of this change - and come join us at the Fair!

Thank you!

well I was unfamilar with steampunk as well a subculture but always liked that kind of thing. so I've been reading up on it all day and I sent pics to my husband (navy guy on a ship) and he wants to know where we could dress up and hang with some people. I've been dying to make him Victorian clothes and I think its something both of us could get into. we live near seattle and next year we might be living in jacksonville fl.

Announcing Portland, Oregon group- Rose City Steampunks

Announcing Portland, Oregon group-
Rose City Steampunks, Local 23

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rcsteam

This group was created with the intention of facilitating
communication within the Steampunk community in the Portland Metro
area.

In the past, we have relied on using Brass Goggles and Spare Goggles
for our communication about events and meetups. With the recent
problems at the Brass Goggles site, and not wishing to use up too much
bandwidth at the Spare Goggles site, we decided to create this group.

This is the place to post notices about upcoming events, meetups, and
to have general chat of interest to Portland area steampunks. Please
come in, take a look around, post your photo, add a link, put your
event on the calendar, and leave a message. We hope that this will
become a comfy spot on the Interweb for all!

I amnot sure how much of htis is a fad or not, but I would love to see more SteamPunk activity here in Charlotte. How do you promote this form of fandom in your cities?

Custum steampunk headphones and motorcycle helmets!

I've currently had some luck with some custom steampunk headphones which double nicely as a "hands but not wires" free kit for a mobile phone. Basically there British army tank crew headphones converted from military six pin audio to conventional jack to jack sockets then sprayed, plated or wrapped in different materials. I've done gold, brass and leather and am working on converting the helmet for a turrent gunner into a motorcycle helmet at the moment!

I've posted a photo on my profile so if anyone wants a tutorial or me to source them some parts i'll be happy to help!

cheers!
DragonCon Steam Punk

There were a number of Steam Punks at DragonCon. I am not sure what has sparked the Steam that drives this Fandom, but it looks like fun. My hope is that this is not a fad.

Steampunk ball Sept 6

A Victorian Ball in Space
Rule, Britannia!
Britannia rule the stars!
Britain’s flag extends to Venus, Mercury and Mars!

Don't miss PEERS' third venture into the world of Victorian Steampunk: Space 1889 - a Victorian Ball in Space. Program your Babbage Analytical Engines, sail the luminiferous ether between the worlds to this Nineteenth Century science fiction ball, and keep Venus British!

The year is an alternate 1889 in which, thanks to inventor Thomas Alva Edison, computer engineer Thomas Babbage, software developer Ada, Countess of Lovelace, visionary scientists Herbert George Wells and Jules Verne, and many other distinguished men and women of science and engineering, the Victorians have air and space travel, high technology, computers (analytical engines), calculators (difference engines), efficient software (the versatile and elegant ADA), and even email (“electric messaging”). The Great Game has extended to Outer Space with Great Britain, Germany, Russia and those intrepid Americans rushing to colonize every planet in sight. Welcome to Space 1889. This is the milieu of our ball.

Join His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and His Excellency, the Governor of Her Majesty’s Crown Colony of Venus, for a formal ball to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of British rule on the planet. Diplomats, explorers, scientists and artists from Earth and from around the galaxy are cordially invited to attend.
