Hi and questions (xpost)

Hi all, I'm a for-fun musician (guitar, hand drums, bass) looking to start recording as a hobby and possbly a career move in the future (I'm a computer guy). I have picked up a couple of $10-15 mics to get started and have been recording using Audition 2.0 with the mic plugged directlly into my computer mic port. Although it's been fun to record my originals and play with myself (OMG, did I just say that?) I am looking to take it to the next level. I have a small amout of money available to invest in equipment (<$200). After perusing several websites I loceted this device:

www.zzounds.com/item--BEHXENYX1204FX

The reviews seem extremelly positive and it is in my price range, have any of you had personal experience with this item? I like this item cause It comes with a USB 2.0 audio interface in addition to being a board and having effects. It can record 4 tracks at the same time which should be plenty for me to start and has phantom power for when I get around to purchasing a condenser mic.

Also what do you guys think about Audition? Should I be saving up for something else?

Could anyone recommend any websites/books/magizines to help me learn more about this art?

My personal advice would be to go software before hardware because you'll generally get more for your money and have more options. I would go with Ableton lite ($150)-you have a full studio and effects and a whole lot of options...

    That's my 2 cents...

I understand that Audition is a pretty good work station.....If you like it and are comforable go for it. Many other programs offer free demos....maybe give them a try before you make a final decision. I use Ableton Live and I love it but, it wasn't my first program (Acid first, then Reason for me) and the interface and concept takes a little time to wrap your head around. Concentrate on getting a good interface (preferrably Firewire) with good converters and good preamps....it will make all the difference in the world for what you are trying to do. Mackie makes some good ones. TC electronic also does. The RME Hammerfall is REALLY good but, may be overkill for you. If you are just playing around at home (with yourself....LOL) concentrate on just getting a 2 channel interface/converter. I understand Apogee makes a 2 channel interface that is excellent for around 500 bucks. Sounds expensive but you will probably never have to buy another unless you want more channels.
