I'm looking for a utility that creates and image from a wav file and can then recreate the wav file from the image. I've tried the "Bitmaps and Waves" program and while it makes some cool new sounds from the old ones, I'm trying to find one that keeps a faithful representation. Any ideas? Is there a plugin for Audacity or anything?
thanks

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Fri, November 24, 2006 - 1:39 AMYou realize, of course, that the interpolation of visual data into audio data is
a very random thing.
Bitmaps and Waves does this but it choses certain approaches that, I guess, you either like or you don't.
I'm trying now, unsuccessfully to remember the Mac program that used to do this.
Was it MetaSynth? -

Fri, November 24, 2006 - 8:08 AMyup... metasynth.
also jitter... if you're ambitious and wealthy!
I've always wondered about using mathematica for such things... but I still need to hustle someone to get it for me at a student discount. -

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Sat, November 25, 2006 - 1:44 AMIt's been years since I used MetaSynth, but it did beautiful things with sound design, including
allowing you to use interesting multiple iterations of your imagery.
I used to love it to death but I'm working mostly on a PC system these days and not a Mac (ever since Max/MSP, Jitter, Pluggo, Mode and
Hipno came out for the PC).
One thing about Meta Synth is that it lets you 'paint' your sounds. -

Tue, November 28, 2006 - 11:11 PMI've always wanted to use the metasynth - what's Jitter?
Doesn't Reaktor have some facilities for 'drawing sound'? I am sure I remeber a module in their demo. -

Wed, November 29, 2006 - 12:47 AMNewschool would be the Reaktor Module in question. Loads of fun. -

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 12:51 AMActually with Newschool, it operates a little differently than what the previous posts are describing. You can actually just draw little pictures that act as a sequencer for a multitimbral synth. Don't want to get someone all exited about the wrong (but cool) thing. -

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 5:54 AMJitter is a program developed in Max/MSP that allows for the midi control
of Video data in real time.
I'm really new to it so I can't tell you much about it, but I've been a C74 representing artist
and am getting excited about using it do process my own videos in real time.
If you are interested in my very, very lo fi vids that accompany my abstract electronic tracks off my upcoming
multi media DVD, ORANGE you can see them at www.youtube.com/looppool
they are even lower fi than I made them but the, that's the point, eh? -

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 9:31 PMFucking incredible Rick! Ok, I really need to get jitter. As a C74 representing artist, are you entitled to any significant discounts for your homies (maybe a 41 year old white guy shouldn't use the word "homie".....sorry). BTW: this is not a serious question: you don't have to dignify it with an answer. -

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 10:18 AMI thought the reaktor module was called 'skribble' or something and that it was kinda like additive synthesis with the 'skribble' dictating the harmonics and modulated effects.
Jitter sounds very cool indeed :)
Saw your vids by the way, Rick . Very nice indeed.

Re: wav 2 jpeg utility
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 12:36 PMI didn't get reaktor until 4 & I upgraded to 5 within 6 months. I don't remember skribble but that doesn't mean anything either. Reaktor 5 will only run a (very small) select group of Reaktor 3 modules. Absynth & some of the other reaktor modules offer quite extensive breakpoint envelope editing for waveforms but I don't believe that this is what you are talking about. -

Thu, November 30, 2006 - 12:44 PMAhhh....It is Skrewell & yes that is pretty much how it happens. I get real used to dealing with the drawings that are already there & just mess around with the cutoff frequencies, etc. to get what I want for sound. Pretty nifty & very CPU hungry. -

Thu, November 30, 2006 - 9:42 PMAh, Skrewell - that was it :)
Yeah, I used it twice for fun at a friends house and thought it was pretty nifty. Nice concept and sound I thought.
