    USF and Tampa...

    Thu, March 24, 2005 - 10:38 AM
Hey... I'm thinking of USF for grad school in the fall 05 in applied anthro... i live up in the philly area, and i'm just concerned that tampa will be too much of a small town vibe or something.... what's the area like for students?... is there any kind of scene?.. i would love to hear what anyone has to say about tampa, usf, and the area in general... thanks...

Nope, its not that bad. I moved here from DC about 4 years ago and was not disappointed. It isn't a small town, so much as a very small downtown area surrounded by a collection of suburbs. Its pretty cool, a little ghetto in places, very redneck, but it shouldn't be a culture shock. Now Boone, NC at Appalachian State University...now THAT was a fucking culture shock for me!

thanks for the encouraging words about tampa. I'm actually coming down there for a visit in about 2 weeks. Any recommendations for places to check out in or around the city and/or USF?
I have to say the very redneck part is a bit scary. I've been living in redneck PA for awhile now, but at least philly is nearby and a haven for the slightly more culturally aware...
anyway, what should i check out on a 3 day trip to tampa?
        thanks...

simple food but good is Moe's Southwest Grill...its a chain that has barely broken into the north yet (only 2 in Maryland) but it is similar to California Burrito and Chipotle's...but MUCH better! Try the Joey Bag O' Donuts (burrito) with the tofu. I know, you may not like tofu, but you will...Moe's is the only place other than The Melting Pot that I have liked, nay, LOVED! Its a chain all over FL, and worth checking out. Also Tijuana Flats on Fowler Ave is very good Ameri-Mex stuff (and they serve Woodchuck Cider, for us Northerners), and Pita Pit is a little place, also on Fowler, that specializes in Pita sandwiches, veggie and meat. Open very late (3am most nights, iirc). For drinks, the Copper Top Pub, on Fowler and 52nd has been a USF staple for decades. Professors used to hold classes there...draft beers (and Kelly's Irish cider) with a $1/pitcher USF discount, pool tables, fake dartboards (soft tips) and digital jukebox. It was one of my favorite hangouts during field school.

I recommend a drive out Rt 60/Courtney Campbell Causeway to Clearwater Beach. It is a beautiful drive, and the beach is not bad, especially the Pier at night with little handmade craft kiosks and sometimes live music.

            LOVE Tijuan Flats... good recomendation,....

Also liked Rocky's the grill/pub/hang out on the USF golfcourse....good place to go with friends,, never that busy, and you can kinda just take over the scene...

Melting Pot, also fabulous...but pricey...BUT oh so worth it!

hey everyone... thanks for the recomendations... it's funny, i didn't get any of these before my visit, but i did end up going to the pita pit... it gave me some serious food poisoning... the baba ganoush... i was out of it for the rest of the day and night... oh well... i didn't really like the area around USF, and so i'm thinking of making the commute from st petersburg... anybody have any comments about that?...

St Pete is nice, especially if you are only going to USF once or twice a week, but let me tell you, the Howard Frankland Bridge on I-275 from St Pete to Tampa is often a nightmare, and then I-275 between the bridge and I-4 (often referred to as Malfunction Junction...being rebuilt over the next few years). I lived in St Pete Beach (Pass-a-grille), almost as far south in St Pete as you can get, and it would take me about an hour to USF under optimal conditions (42 miles or so).

But yeah, St Pete is nice, just be aware that if you have to go to Tampa during rush hour, expect MAJOR traffic hassles.

Seffner (east of Tampa, at I-75 and I-4) has some decent little places, and is not the traffic nightmare that is US-60 in Brandon. Also, you can easily hop on I-75N to get to USF in about 10-20mins.

Sucks about the bad experience with Pita Pit...it is some seriously good food, and the falafel (sp?) is the only I have had that I liked. Good with tzatziki sauce.

Thanks again for the info... I would love to avoid traffic hassles, but I am resigned to a commute. My girlfriend and i are actually headed down there again in a couple of weeks. We'll probably check out Seffner and a couple other places looking for a shorter commute but with a similar community as in St Pete.
If anyone has any recommendations, that would be great.
