For them moderators on tribe, well for anyone, what happens lets say if for some reason we want to join a tribe, but the moderator dies, and we can't get to join that site any more because the moderator's not "available" I know "most" tribes you can get in just like that, but what about them others that needs the moderators decision? I know it's kind of a far off topic or a question, but I think it would be good if there was an option to have at least another moderator or three moderators for a tribe.

We all know the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. On the Internet, we can change that formula. On the Internet, that formula is largely determined by search engines. The major search engines give the power to the very rich. That is, they give the traffic to the very rich, and almost no traffic to the poor. These means the rich continue to get richer and the poor continue to get poorer.

We can change that by creating a new search engine. I'm looking for people who would like to help.

This is not just about creating a search engine, 'cause it is useless to create a search engine if nobody is going to use it. I've got plans to get people to use it, and I need help with those plans as well. Not just programmers, but regular people as well. We will need to do some programming, lots of testing software, lots of searching for software, lots of promotional work, graphic design, writing, searching for groups and people to help and writing to them, etc. I'm thinking 20 to 30 people might be enough, depending on how hard they work on it.

If you'd like to help, send me a message and we'll talk by phone or skype. I've learned that talking by text does not work.
Looks like I'm fragmented over a dozen social spaces ... got very into Facebook briefly and all my IRL fiends are there (not here) but it got old fast, I have Orkut but not to use much, addicted to Twitter. I want to try and use Behance well ... I see LinkedIn growing all kinds of extra features like Tribe already had ... and yet I'm still encouraged to make my "own" groups at Ning.

It's getting crazy. And I want ways to pull it all back together. I know about OpenID, but I want to talk about *use* more than technology. How do we want to *use* all these different networks together? Do we want to be able to simply merge all the social networks together behind one interface? Or do we simply want to import widgets from one network to another? Or to see a feed of messages posted from friends on any of these networks ...

New Hunter S. Thompson Documentary
This is the trailer for the fun-loving but poignant film that is a tribute to Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

DVD's for this film can be purchased at www.gonzopatriots.com

Blue Kraning, Los Angeles based documentary director and Emmy Award winning writer, has just released the DVD of his film, Blasted, The Gonzo Patriots of Hunter S. Thompson, which recently premiered at the Starz Denver International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Three years in the making, this film is a tribute to a great journalist and renowned physician. Kraning says the film, “is intended for any fan of Hunter S. Thompson or just anyone who likes to see large stuffed animals blown to bits by a homemade Bowling Ball Cannon fired by a man in a purple polyester suit, or see transgender Civil War re-enactors blast their aptly named mountain howitzer...’Lucrecia,’ while reciting Hunter’s wisdom. I made this film entirely as a one-man-band, in the tradition of Gonzo individuality and artistic freedom, so I will be distributing the film entirely by myself by selling the film off my website at www.gonzopatriots.com”

"Hunter S. Thompson embodied the American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Blue Kraning's Blasted!!! is a twisted, anarchic, fun, and funny tribute to Hunter, those ideals, and Americans who don't merely mouth the Declaration of Independence, but live it." - Michael Simmons, The Huffington Post

“These are not the famous actors, politicians or even journalists. These are Hunter's readers who are “his people” in the purest sense, an army of thoughtful citizens who are inspired by Hunter's work and who do a fine job of carrying on his legacy.” –Anita Thompson, wife of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson

Anil Dash has been blogging since 1999. He's been a part of the Movable Type team from the earliest days. As you'd expect from a man who has lived in the trenches for so long, his blog is excellent. It's well worth a visit if you haven't been there already. I was recently reading through his 2002 blog recommendations and marvelling at the hardy few who survived through five long years of the internet. The way I figure, that's equivalent to thirty-five people years.

But I also noticed something interesting lodged in the sidebar of his blog. A long list of Anil Dash's many online identities, spread across no less than 29 different websites:

Laurel Krahn created one of the first 30 weblogs back in 1998. Her home page paints a similarly fractured picture of her online identity. I count 21 different websites that represent some part of Laurel:

<Laurel Krahn's many online identities>

There's no way any one person could truly keep these 20 or 30 websites up to date. So which one of these websites represents the real Laurel Krahn, the real Anil Dash? Or do all these tiny fragments of identity cumulatively sum to a whole? Browsing around their sites, it's fairly easy to determine what is getting the lion's share of attention, and pare away the neglected parts. Still, it's unclear.

Back in the olden days before the privatization of the 'Net, the Internet provided just one of dozens of separate and incompatible email systems. To be truly connected back then required holding accounts on GENIE, AOL, CompuServe and others in addition to an Internet address. Over time of course this was recognized as silly and the various networks first implemented Internet email gateways, later adopting standard Internet protocols directly.

This morning I was updating my profile on two of the half-dozen social software sites I use, and I couldn't help but wonder why it is that even so late in the game each of these systems is an island, disconnected from the others.

Is there a push anywhere in this industry to apply the lessons of email to networking sites, so that one day we might maintain a single profile on the system we prefer but enjoy interoperability with all others?

writer John Scalzi on "gaming" social networks:

Cory [Doctorow] points out that one of the problems with Facebook, MySpace, et al., is that all of a person social spheres get dumped into one bin, and suddenly your conservative boss, who you’ve friended to be polite, knows that you hang out with a bunch of polyamorous hippies when you’re off the clock. Aside from my personal inclination to tell any potential boss with hangups about my personal life to just deal with it, dude, there’s no reason one can’t manage one’s online social life as one does one’s offline life, with multiple faces for different people. Use one MySpace account for all your polyfreak pals, another for family and non-polyfreak pals, and another one for your boss and coworkers and random people in the seventh grade what used to beat you up. Think of the latter as the social network equivalent of a spam trap. Don’t tell the people in your social spam trap that, obviously.

Hi friends,

I need some advice for a social network project that I want to develop here in Philadelphia. I cheekily call it "Deadster", because the goal is to map out the social networks of both live and dead people in my city.

My goal is to document the deaths of gay men from HIV in Philadelphia from 1981- the present. For each dead person, I would have a webpage that would include a picture and brief obituary. People from outside the system could come on to the page and add their own personal stories about the person, and link their own profile to the page. Finally, I (ideally) would want to be able to link dead people to other dead people, in order to show how the social networks operated over time.

So my basic picture is something like Friendster or Orkut, except I would want to be able to create lots of identities on the site, link them to other identities (alive and dead) and (a dream here) have some sort of mapping utility that would show how the networks interconnect.

My vision is sort of a Shoah project for HIV (the Shoah project, for those who don't know, was Steven Spielberg's effort to document the lives of those killed in the Holocaust). I also describe it as an AIDS quilt with multi-dimensions---- the opportunity to recapture the stories of many wonderful people who died.

So--- can anyone suggest a software for this effort? I would be most grateful. I have collected many stories and pictures, and I want to figure out a smart way to get them on the web.

2006 has come and gone and we're up to our knees in 2007. Things are pretty quiet, so here's a Q. Where's all this "social" stuff going, eh?

The future of wikipedia, while not necessarily under threat, is "interesting". Tribe seems relatively. There are rumours that people are looking to find the "next" myspace. Youtube is owned by the big guns. Flickr... flickr carries on, it seems :)

Is the social aspect of all this "web 2.0" malarkey simply a business model in search of revenue? Have new, shinier business models come along to replace the old, or are there still some very real, very "grass roots" benefits to social technology that will keep it going, keep improvements coming?

2 new things I can think of that offer some interesting routes:

1. WiiMiis (or whatever they're called) on the Nintendo Wii. There may be some interesting experiments going on here, socially - the barrier between "home" and "abroad" has shifted, with the design more focused (than, say, websites) on *sending* your avatar off to other places. Furthermore, there are experiments with things like voting: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=72963

2. Local SNS, such as http://www.neighbourhoodfixit.com/ which has just launched. Personally, I'd love to see more done on this, but are global sites such as Tribe the place to be discussing these? Surely more local forums are more appropriate? What am I doing here?

C'mon, splash out on thoughts...

http://atlantahoopla.stumbleupon.com/review/10653769/

This is an example of what I'm talking about when I say "...doing the old 'CLICK HERE' thing..." you know - where you type the word in all caps and link the page you want to show to that word.

I use YahooE-mail and they have a hyperlink icon you can easily use instead of having to know the HTML code but I can't figure out how to do it in AOL:

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Last year was a turbulent one for Silicon Valley based Tribe.net. Founding CEO Mark Pincus was ousted, in April and then returned in August. While Pincus was gone rumors swirled that the company had been acquired by NBC, but the deal was never consummated.

But now the New York Times is reporting that the assets of the eight person company have been acquired by Cisco. This follows their acquisition of Five Across, a social networking infrastructure service, two weeks ago. The hope is to use the two company’s technology to help Cisco’s corporate clients build their own social networks, so it isn’t clear whether or not the Tribe service itself will live on.

The price of the Tribe deal hasn’t been disclosed, but usually these things leak within a few days.

The demand is clearly there, as seen by Reuters’ announcement today that they’re looking to build their own Myspace clone, for financial types. Everyone, it seems, wants their very own social network these days.

Cisco is now a player in the social networking space. That certainly wasn’t in anyone’s predictions for 2007. And there are bound to be a few snickers around the valley as Cisco dips its toes in this new business.

Marc Andreessen, the founder of Ning (which just upgraded its build-it-yourself social network platform), had a great sound bite on this topic in the NYT article. He said “The idea that Cisco is going to be a force in social networking is about as plausible as Ning being a force in optical switches.”

Hi all,

We opened today our site www.ubiplanet.com.

Our vision is that to date communication and exchange tools remain too diverse and too complex for “normal people” to give them everyday value (except for the youngers), are mostly feature centric vs. user centric, are not integrated, people have to open several accounts (e.g. Flickr, youTube, Blogger, Messenger, …) and then have to manage several contacts lists…

Fakes identities are spread all over the web resulting in undesired messages (spams, blogs). Therefore it is almost impossible to carry over a LEVEL OF TRUST from the real world to the Internet world…

Most sites offer low or even no privacy. They are mainly not suitable to handle my “private life”.

Our ambition is to provide a web based tool with
-	an integrated approach to fit all daily communication & exchange needs (photos, blogs, mail, im, groups, calendar),
-	with a single network view, centered on the user,
-	with no fake identities but 1:1 distance between people (relationship + geographic),
-	total privacy control from the user on each piece of information.

A service that is designed to help me easily handle my private life (communication & exchange with people I already know) as nobody does that way.

I would appreciate to get your feedbacks here, it would help us a lot to improve our service taht is in a beta phase.

Thanks !

Hello, all! My name is Yosra and I recently remembered that I had a tribe profile, so I thought I'd wander on over to a group designed for discussing social networks. But, that's not really what I'm here to talk about.

I was just wondering, what exactly effects the intellect of these social networks? I've been wondering about this for a while now (because I'm on break from school until January 3rd, and contemplating my navel only takes up so much of the day), and I just can't seem to figure it out. In one sense, the invite only policy seems to work fairly well. When Orkut was first launched as invite only, the original communities and their posts seemed fairly well thought out and understandable. However, as time went on, this was no longer the case. There was an increasing number of people simply posting the "kiss or kill da person above u" or "dedicate a song to da person above". I'm sure Orkut users will know what I'm talking about. Interestingly, though, this began and picked up momentum even before Orkut revoked its invite only policy.

Similarly, Myspace isn't exactly creating the right kind of atmosphere for any sort of thought provoking discussion, either. At this point, it seems to have settled for becoming a plot device on Police drama shows on television (eg. BeFriends on Law and Order). But then, it never really peddled itself as hotbed for political or philosophical discourse, did it? It was a place for friends.

However, then there are networks like this one where despite there being no invite only policy, seems to have escaped the "do you want 2 make franship wit me" epidemic. There was also a group? It had little faces for people without profile pictures that were similar to the ones on flickr? Does anyone remember what I'm talking about? Well, anyhow, I digress. My point is, till now it doesn't seem like tribe and a few more social networks are overrun by sillyness or lewd messages. Of course, with that being said, I probably should back peddle and mention I've only been on the site for about twenty minutes, which is hardly enough time to pass judgement (because I'm a judge-y type of person).

Anyhow, now that I'm done being a lilly livered Pollyanna, any thoughts? If not exclusivity, then what lowers the IQ of a social network?

Also, if anyone has an invitation to Wallop, it would be greatly appreciated! If not, thank you anyhow!

Demographic markets and social network services: Your Wallop is not My Wallop

OK, I just been playing with Wallop for 10 minutes (thanks for the invite, Sean!), and been having some thoughts.

Non Sequitur's post over on the recent Orkut thread brought up an interesting point, even if it was only a sentence long:

"A couple of years and a few thousand brazilian users too late."

This sums up the essential truth of modern social networking services, IMHO, which is: No one service will cover everyone, and so a service is integrally tied to its demographic. That's to say, the multitude of services, along with competitive differences and staggered releases, means that each service will capture a fundamentally different section of the global 'marketplace'. This is then reinforced through positive network externalities, such that you cannot *predict* which audience you will get when you initially launch a service.

Hence, Orkut = Brazilians. Tribe = leftfield, alternative. MySpace = teenagers, et al. The *culture* that arises on a particular network cannot be chosen by the originators: it must emerge as the result of a random mix of the technology used (e.g. what languages are allowed), marketing, culture and timing (i.e. who's the next 'big group' in search of a relatively 'unused', 'unclaimed' social space?), and probably more.

The challenge for service providers then is to *recognise* the emerging audience, and *adapt* to it. I'm hesitant to say "encourage" it, as I think you can put many people off through such a method - people don't like to be told who they are, and what their space is. The key is to allowing people the freedom to develop their own culture, and adaptation encapsulates this 'liberal direction' - i.e. basically making sure that the emerging audience can do what they want.

Which brings me back to Wallop. Who is Wallop for? Who will pick it up? My initial play with it makes me think "ooh, swishy. what does it actually *do* though?", but this is important for one reason - my functionalist approach betrays my observing-cum-technologist viewpoint. I am *curious*, about how it works, but - importantly - I am not in search of a place to 'colonise' - I already use other services and sites.

Hence, my concern that I cannot copy and paste text easily, or that my usual scrolling method has been replaced with draggy-scrollbars (shudder), is important in turning me off, but is unimportant in that I also wasn't likely to adopt it *despite* such niggles. Thus, the question is: which demographic/market is likely to pick up Wallop and run with it, or is the route of general non-adoption still the most likely?

If you are part of a radical to moderate group or organization of 20 or more people, and can potentially serve as their spokesperson, you are invited to join the Tribe Spokescouncil – a peer group of representatives from Tribe converging to build critical mass for unified action. Groups of Friends, and Tribes, on Tribe.net should be an ideal place to organize. (If you do not yet have a group of 20 to represent, you may still participate, but you may not block consensus decisions.)

We hope that our collective effort will help displace frustration, fear, and malaise with a sense of community, responsibility, focus, and effective, practical power. It’s time.

Our intention is to unite a network of Tribe Friends, Tribes and other groups outside Tribe to generate critical mass and take practical, effective action for better communities, nations and world.

Spokespeople will connect their groups to the Spokescouncil. Discussion and consensus building around agreeing to an action or series of actions will happen in consultation with your group. As a spokesperson you represent the viewpoints of your group, not yourself. You are an emissary (or general!) from a non-violent army meeting with other emissaries to negotiate how to most effectively "fight" for peace, justice and sustainability. We won't spend time covering issues we don't agree on – the need for our prompt action is too great and we agree on too much.

The Tribe Spokescouncil leadership will be equally shared by all present through consensus decision-making based on the Formal Consensus process. www.consensus.net/ocaccontents.html

Groups represented in the Council should be in general agreement with The Earth Charter: www.earthcharter.org

The organizers of this process will not attempt to achieve their personal or organizational preferences for action while facilitating; we are assuming service roles, taking responsibility to call the circle, help facilitate and keep the process moving within the mission of the Tribe Spokescouncil.

The mass of people eventually represented by the Council will undertake the most effective series of actions upon which it can agree. As a process based in consensus we expect that people will come together with diverse issues they care about, and will find common ground through sharing and listening. We will not act until we have achieved the critical mass necessary for the greatest possible impact. We expect these actions will be diverse in nature, scale and scope. In order to achieve critical mass for one action we suspect groups will need to agree to "build each others' barns", that is, groups will come to know and trust each other through their representatives and agree to lend their numbers to a series of campaigns, so each campaign has the critical mass required for prompt and full success.

If you feel called, or are just curious, join the Tribe Spokescouncil, tribes.tribe.net/spokescouncil

If you have questions about the details of the process, please see the FAQ for the Valleywide Spokescouncil of western Massachusetts, www.valleywidespokescouncil.net

If you know of others who may meet the qualification of responsibly representing at least 20 others and should be invited, please invite them to join.

I'm curious about why there aren't more shared devices/interfaces (i.e. off-line, group-centric) in the world. To me, it feels like the move towards social networking services encapsulates an _isolation_, wherein we must each access a group through our own window to the world, and our interaction with others is limited to the third party services offered to us - *sold* to us - in places that are not our own.

I've started jotting down some thoughts/rhetoric on this here:

http://www.exmosis.net/node.SocialInterfaces

but I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on the matter, plus any links to real examples of more off-line type services that encourage face-to-face computing (side-by-side face-to-face: "face-by-face" services? :) - check out the Dynamo project linked to on the page, for example.

Are we being forced into "personal" computing? How can we integrate the real world with the "elsewhere" feel of computing? Why do I have to wait until I get home in order to "send a link" to somebody, hours after we were talking about it?

Hmm, I even feel slightly guilty just sitting on my own typing this post out... ;)

If interested pls comment or send me a message. I will be investing my own personal income towards this project so I am taking it seriously. If it becomes successful I will move into a money generating phase.
http://describe.blogspot.com/2006/09/symbol-meets-world.html

Gist: Separating "good" content (i.e. legal content generated 'truthfully' by genuine users) from "bad" content (illegal or 'faked') is impossible in a culture that is defined by its "privately-owned" media (i.e. a dependence on privately-owned films, music, games and hardware, etc). In traditionally optimistic fashion, I'm predicting the "free run" of current social networks will be replaced by a collection of separated, competitive networks owned by content owners (in much the same way as film content and distribution are entangled, for example).

The question is, is this unavoidable? Can we really rely solely on technology and the innovation of a few small companies/individuals to change the status quo?

Has anyone checked out www.cambrianhouse.com ? This is something I've been waiting for...a way to get multiple web ideas developed in a collaborative way, things that I don't want to have developed on my own, with a way to potentially make money.
For example a few months ago I posted an idea here on Tribe that I thought was cool, and other people here did to, and told me to just do it. Well this is the kind of thing I'd post on Cambrian with hopes people would be motivated to participate with the prospect of it getting launched as a team effort.

You wouldn't post ideas that you would be upset if someone "stole" them, just ones that you know for sure you wouldn't want to build / launch yourself.

This is one I submitted for example. If most of you are in SF I would love to hear what you think of it. If it doesn't win / get implemented within a year via Cambrian, the IP comes back to me.

How often does a genuinely new idea enter the political arena in America? Here is one that should be considered and discussed by anybody who is dissatisfied with traditional methods for bringing about positive change in America. It represents a momentous development in technology as well as politics.

I am the first candidate anywhere to offer a secure state-of-the-art digital voting system that will enable citizens in my district TO CONTROL my votes in Congress. My candidacy is connected with www.NevadaVoteDirect.org, a citizen initiative to end political corruption and make government more responsive to the people. At Nevada Vote Direct, registered voters in Nevada's 2nd Congressional District may vote not only on the issues of the day, but also on specific legislation pending in Congress. The system provides secure electronic voting in secret ballots conducted continuously on the Internet or by telephone. People are not obligated to vote, and may vote only on the issues and bills that concern them. But this is not just another opinion poll, for I have pledged that, when elected, I will vote in Congress EXACTLY as directed by the majority of voters in my congressional district.

We see Nevada Vote Direct as the solution to the problem of political corruption, because no lobbyist will even attempt to buy my vote, knowing that my vote belongs to the majority of voters in my district - no ifs, ands or buts.

Naturally, this idea raises many questions: about the nature of our republic; about the system's fairness and security; about how it works in practice. Our Frequently Asked Questions Page provides comprehensive answers.

People should also consider how this technology may be applied at all levels of society in order to free us from unresponsive and corrupt leadership in labor unions, civic and environmental organizations, political parties, etc.

Please look us up and pass this information on to your friends and associates. We are not merely introducing an idea. We intend to win in November. But we cannot do this without your assistance. Together, we will demonstrate to the nation and the world that corruption in politics and government is obsolete. Our success in Nevada will be followed by other candidates for office all across the nation. Help us to make history in Nevada, and to change the world.

Hi there,
I'm hoping someone here can help me.
I'm looking for a host that can offer webforms as part of their web building tools package.
However, someone mentioned to me that some hosts have packages that include these webforms and building tools.
If not, then I'm willing to buy a software that does it, but it must be REALLY professional and REALLY flexible or specific, and at least have a demo with clear and concise indications and MAJOR user-friendliness ...

I'm looking for the following features/options on my website, and need tools that will build them for me :

1) Membership Registration option
2) Login Option and forgotten password option that auto sends an email to members
3) A profile building form for members, that includes pull down (multiple choice) options of my choice, and will classify them in a specific section of the website.
4) The profile option should include a set maximum of text and 2 photos.
5) An edit option to edit that profile.
6) An auto-reply message, that tells them their profile has been approved and posted.
7) A form posting to classifieds, events, and the forum... available to members only, that will auto-classify the posting to the right section of the site.
8) A feature that prohibits non members from posting any profiles, events, postings to classifieds, or to the forum.
9) Security for members privacy.
10) Paypal service and HIGH security for members to shop or download files.

This membership will be 100% free to attract as many people as possible in a non-profit community, so my budget is quite low.
I don't need more than 2 email addresses, and sub domain pointers, and numerous FTP accounts are not priority for me.

My web-building skills are dated, so I do not understand many of the terms/jargon and names of some of the features listed in the "hosting packages".
But, I do know EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

What is the availability like out there for a software that will offer me the TEN above adjustable tools/forms for my website ?

How can I find out who Plenty of Fish, Yahoo or Lavalife uses ?
I'm not building a personals site but I do like the look of their forms, and plentyoffish.com is free so it can't be that much.

This may also help me make a decision as to which host to go with.

I'm so stressed out over this since I have such limited time ~*~
I would be so very grateful for your feedback ...

Thank you so very much :)))

Under the COPE Act, we'll lose the Internet as our "town square" - where we talk to one another, exchange views, find information from many diverse sources of news and opinion, blog, contact candidates and engage in our democracy. We will be left with an Internet that is mostly about selling things - entertainment, TV, films, games and other goods - and that is no longer about citizen engagement.

James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), and urge your Member to demand a vote on net neutrality.
So --- I am working with a pretty talented team on a social networking project for college students. Yes I know I know - social networking is a bit in the past - But we want to offer more, think flash happy : professor reviews, travel information, a marketplace, funny videos, calendaring, etc. (much more of course).

What kinds of things would you want if you were in college? Don't you want video, voip and all that new technology - no longer trying to use an site that markets to everyone from 12 year olds to 60 year olds?

I just thought i'd post a little update on our activities of late. Barnraiser is almost 2.5 years old now and we've grown to be over 500 networked folk who collaborate in amoungst other things the development of social software. Using that software, education and a little determination we have had successes in working with people globally in creating small open digital society projects. We are now looking towards Africa (lake victoria region) to link social software and tech folk with local villages down there in creating mentor networks. We of course have no idea if the project will be a success or not, but that is no reason not to try. If any of this interests you feel free to take a look at our network (http://build.barnraiser.org) which is using version 0.6.9 of AROUNDMe; our free social networking and group collaboration platform.

Some may look upon this as a blatent advert and they are of course absolutely right:) But in my defence Barnraiser is a non for profit organisation and all our software is released under GPL license and if you take interest in social projects using social software then you are very welcome to join in in our collaborative efforts.

>The collective is more likely to be smart when it isn't defining its own questions, when the goodness of an answer can be evaluated by a simple result (such as a single numeric value,) and when the information system which informs the collective is filtered by a quality control mechanism that relies on individuals to a high degree. Under those circumstances, a collective can be smarter than a person. Break any one of those conditions and the collective becomes unreliable or worse.

Meanwhile, an individual best achieves optimal stupidity on those rare occasions when one is both given substantial powers and insulated from the results of his or her actions.

If the above criteria have any merit, then there is an unfortunate convergence. The setup for the most stupid collective is also the setup for the most stupid individuals.<

Lanier beats up Wikipedia and I use and like Wikipedia enough that criticism of it is often hard to absorb. But Lanier makes some good criticisms and then points to ways correct. One very important point is that the Internet should connect people and to the extent too much attention is paid to the "hive mind" this essential strength and function of the Internet is undermined.

The essay also made me think about how much tribe.net gets it right.
