We had two car thefts and three house burglaries in our neighborhood all within an eight week period at the end of the year. It's such a bummer having to deal with this. Crappy cars are not great either because they WILL steal them for joyriding, and then you have to pay the tow yard to get it back. You get the shaft both ways.

Our neighbors had a good laugh tho when a crackhead decided to smoke out in front of their house while reading the New York Times. At least the junkies are getting more literate.

Our neighbor's "crappy " car was stolen then abandoned when they took the jumper cables to get a "better" car.
Besides even if it is crappy, the catalytic converters are getting good money on the streets.

        >>>An auto burglary is not a stolen car.
Stolen Auto is 91 cases, which is still bad.
Auto burglary probably means stuff stolen from a vehicle<<<<<

well that's a little better... yeah, definitely never leave ANYTHING visible for thieves

and crappy cars do totally get stolen. my idiot friend got his crappy old toyota van stolen- TWICE. got it back once, the second time the thieves wrecked it. crappy cars still need a club, or some speed freak loser will take your car to stockton in the middle of the night. Or some idiot form people's park will just drive it around for two weeks.

I agree, any car can be stolen. I've had two cars stolen. One was an old Toyota station wagon. That was many years ago now, it was stolen from East Oakland, and the police found it in South Berkeley. It wasn't worth hardly anything. Someone just stole it to get a ride home, they guessed.

More recently I had a nice looking and running Nissan Altima stolen from North West Berkeley. The police never found it. I didn't have more than liability insurance so it was a total loss for me. I was so discouraged I didn't get another car for two years. The car I have now I always park with a club on, even if I'm just running in to a store for 5 minutes. And, of course, I never ever leave anything in the car to attract a thief to break in either.

I know several people who have had their cars stolen. It does happen more often than we like to think.

if you have an old honda, put a club on it. my fiance got his stolen (then returned minus stereo and speakers) last week. another friend the same thing happened, though her ignition is now shot and she has to use a screwdriver to turn her car on. the cops said it happens a lot and there is an 80-90% return rate, which while that's great and all, paying to get your car out of hock and redo your dash and stereo is a pain in the butt.

(we're near the ashby bart on a NICE block btw.)

I have heard this about older Hondas and Toyotas, too. Just about any key can be jammed in to the ignition to start them. Even a screwdriver. So yes, a club is a very good idea.

The folks at the tow yard told us to avoid the steering wheel club and use the break club instead. It slips over your break pedal and makes it impossible to use. They said the other version is quite simple to get around as all you need to do is cut the steering wheel and slip it off. I've used both and I do find the break club to be more cumbersome, but it also definitely seems that it would deter thieves who need to do their thing quickly. The tow folks said it takes a blow torch to cut through it.
