Where do I hire day laborers in Berkeley/East Bay? I'd rather not have to go to Chaves in San Francisco?

Re: Day laborers?
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 12:52 PMFourth Street, next to Spenger's Fish Grotto. They have signs and everything up so it should be easy to find. The street north of University...the name eludes me at the moment. -

Re: Day laborers?
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 2:18 PMok question for you folks- (i give some background first)
i hire day labor , less often lately but over the last few years , i have paid out about $15 000 to day laborers (i don't rip these guys off, i give them 15-20 / hr, but my work is sporadic so i can't hire regular help)
I usually go to people's park and find an American to work for me because i am not all that in favor of the massive influx of illegals,
ESpecially related to Hearst/ fourth street- when i started out 13 years ago, at the day labor spot there were 2 groups, the Latinos, about 20, and the Americans (of all colors)- about 20 also.
for the last 5 or so years, if you're lucky you see 2 or 3 Americans vs 50-100 Latinos, of which i am guessing the vast majority are illegal.
I rarely hire illegal help, so far only once, and i had to get my ladyfriend to translate over the phone for me.
THE PROBLEM- these days the homeless Americans i am finding are about 98% likely to be serious drug addicts who aren't even trying to get off the street. originally, i hired people who needed a way to get some $$ to get a phone, you know, get on their feet- it worked for me, it has worked for others.
Hiring illegals, i feel like i am just adding to a problem, and worse, the $$$ gets sent out of the US, and not spent locally where i hire an American and they spend the $$ local, etc.
BUT if these clowns are just gonna buy speed (sending half the $$ to Mex. anyway), not put the $$ to any good use
ARGH!!
so finally my question if anyone felt like reading all this, What seems better for all of us as a city- hiring illegal aliens, or hiring druggies.
i hate to say it but i am losing hope on the Americans and think i might have to start hiring the illegals more often -

Re: Day laborers?
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 11:00 PMI'd hire an illegal over an alcoholic or wasted drug abuser.
I haven't hired a day laborer myself, but have heard from others good reports about hiring men from the 4th and Hearst spot. And perhaps all the men there are not illegals. Some might actually have green cards, and find that that system of getting work is working well for them. Sometimes temp work leads to longer lasting jobs.
For people who don't speak Spanish (I don't) you could talk to a few of them until you found the right men for both the job needed, and the communication abilities that work for you.
I'm guessing that if there are Americans trying to get work at that spot they are probably not so wasted as the ones you'd find at People's Park. A lot of competition on 4th to get work, the druggies probably couldn't handle it. -

Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 12:18 AMYou raise some good points, Thorn. I haven't hired day labor yet myself. I would also be loathe to support an illegal immigrant. I'd want to hire an unemployed or underemployed American first. But I'm not going to hire someone I can't trust at all (like someone with a drug problem). Many years ago in my hometown, they had Youth Employment Service and you could call them to hire teens looking for jobs. I wonder if there's anything like that up here? Do you have any experience with B. O. S. S., Thorn? I know they have a contract with the city. I wonder how good they are at separating the wheat from the chaff where the homeless are concerned. It's too bad we don't have union hiring halls here that I know of. It'd be cool if there were a place you could go to get vetted labor that was still affordable. Maybe guys who haven't made journeyman level yet. -

Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:05 AMI had good experiences using day laborers in San Francisco when I lived in the Mission. I usually hired them when I needed something large moved or help cleaning out the garage, etc. They were very hard working and did a great job. On the occasion that I have hired the homeless, etc. I found they always wanted me to solve their other problems as well. The day laborers just wanted the work to support their family.
Bottom line is I'll hire whoever is willing to do the work and I pay an excellent wage, but I don't want to have to go beating the bushes to find someone.

That's quite understandable, Bobzilla. I was just thinking out loud because it's something that has been on my mind for when I've had jobs where I've had to consider laborers. -

Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 2:31 PMNo offense taken whatsoever. This is a subject that it seems raises some strong feelings. I have a co-worker who lives in Berkeley and I asked him where to hire day laborers before I posted here asking. He was visibly upset that I would consider hiring illegals. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 4:38 PMNot that sfgate.com front page polls are accurate or anything, but I was still surprised that in yesterday's poll about what people's top political issue is, 30-something percent said "Illegal immigration" compared to 47-or so percent saying "war in Iraq". I am an unusual progressive in that I believe that immigration laws are there for a reason and that if I don't get to plop my ass down in Sweden, Ireland or Canada without passing their qualifications, I don't see why people should have it any easier immigrating here...however, I'm also aware that anti-immigration sentiment has been fanned by Republicans to distract from more important issues like the war. So while I have a stand on illegal immigration, it's not close to being my top issue. Not at all. -

Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 5:33 PMBOSS- great idea spidra, thanks! i know all about them, should have thought of that sooner. people hanging around there are probably my best bet.
as far as the trust thing, yeah, for some jobs i have to be a little concerned, but for the most part, we're throwing junk into a truck, the job sites don't leave much opportunity to steal, but it is an issue sometimes.
i think i am going to try and avoid buying serious addicts their drugs.
it really sucks the times i have brought people back to the park only to watch them walk straight over to a dealer with my money. -

Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:05 PMHey Spidra, may I chime in? That's a great idea. Isn't there also an existing labor pool in Oakl.? -
-
Re: Day laborers?
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:33 PMWhat do you mean by "existing labor pool"? I wouldn't know whether to answer yes, no, or I don't know if I don't know what you mean. :)
I think there's a hiring hall in SF. At least a building labeled as such. Don't know how it operates, though.
I don't know whether unions would go for the idea I put out there because they don't want to undercut the top union construction wages. Although it would behoove them to structure something that would steer folks away from using day laborers and there might be a way they could do it *without* undercutting master's and journeyman's wages.
